Elektrode, die Mittel umfasst, die es erlauben, den Elektrolyten im Elektodenraum zu begasen und deren Verwendung.
Description
Elektrode
Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft eine Elektrode, die zur Umsetzung von Substraten in elektrochemischen Reaktionen verwendet werden kann, insbesondere zur Generierung von Oxidationsmitteln.
Bekannte Gasdiffusionselektroden, die zur Umsetzung von Substraten in elektrochemischen Reaktionen verwendet werden können, erfordern einen besonderen Elektrodenaufbau. Solche Gasdiffusionselektroden bestehen aus porösem Material, das an der Elektrode aufgebracht wird, oder aus dem die Elektrode besteht. Wenn an Gasdiffusionselektroden elektrochemische Prozesse ablaufen sollen, muss eine Zu- und Ableitung der Reaktionsgase gewährleistet sein.
In der Literatur ist die Begasung von Elektrolyten beschrieben, wobei eine solche Begasung außerhalb der Elektrolysezelle stattfindet. Wird der Elektrolyt aber außerhalb der Elektrolysezelle, z.B. in einem Vorlagetank, begast, so kommt es während des Transports durch Schläuche bzw. Rohrleitungen zur Ausgasung und zur Bildung von Gaspolstern in den erwähnten Leitungen. Dies reduziert den Nutzen der Begasung des Elektrolyten erheblich.
Es wurde nun überraschend eine Möglichkeit gefunden, in der die Ausgasung und die Bildung von Gaspolstern praktisch verhindert werden kann.
In einem Aspekt stellt die vorliegende Erfindung eine Elektrode zur Verfügung, die dadurch gekennzeichnet ist, dass sie Mittel umfasst, die es erlauben, den Elektrolyten im Elektrodenraum zu begasen.
Eine Elektrode, die gemäß vorliegender Erfindung zur Verfügung gestellt wird, wird hierin auch als „Elektrode gemäß (nach) vorliegender Erfindung" bezeichnet.
Mittel, die es erlauben, den Elektrolyten im Elektrodenraum zu begasen, umfassen Mittel, die zur Einleitung von Gasen geeignet sind, bevorzugt umfassen diese Gase Luft und Sauerstoff.
Bevorzugt liegen mehrere Mittel, die zur Einleitung von Gasen geeignet sind, in einer Elektrode gemäß vorliegender Erfindung vor.
Mittel, die zur Einleitung von Gasen in den Elektrodenraum einer Elektrode gemäß vorliegender Erfindung geeignet sind, können in verschiedenen Formen, z.B. in kerzenförmiger Form, vorliegen, und umfassen z.B. Einleitröhrchen oder Düsen oder Begasungsfritten, bevorzugt Begasungsfritten, besonders bevorzugt Glasfritten oder Fritten aus Fluorkunststoffen (PTFE, PFA, FEP).
In einem anderen Aspekt stellt die vorliegende Erfindung eine Elektrode, z.B. eine Elektrode gemäß vorliegender Erfindung, zur Verfügung, die dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Elektrode eine dreidimensionale Form umfasst, z.B. eine Schüttung, einen Schaum oder ein Fasermaterial (z.B. Filz).
Durch die Schüttung des Elektrodenmaterials kann ein besonderer Elektrodenaufbau, der oft aufwendige Herstellungsschritte umfasst, vermieden werden.
Die Elektrodenschüttung in einem Elektordenraum gemäß vorliegender Erfindung besteht aus einem leitfähigen Material. Dieses Material kann zum Beispiel ein Material sein, welches für eine bestimmte elektrochemische Reaktion besonders geeignet ist und umfasst beispielsweise und bevorzugt Glaskohlenstoff.
Das leitfähige Elektrodenschüttmaterial sollte eine möglichst große Oberfläche aufweisen und liegt daher bevorzugt in Form kleiner Partikel vor. Bevorzugt sind die Partikel Granule, z.B. Partikel, in splitter- und kugel, zylinderförmiger Geometrie, wie sie aus einem Granulierungsverfahren hervorgehen.
Eine bevorzugte Elektrodenschüttung gemäß vorliegender Erfindung umfasst granulierten Glaskohlenstoff.
Durch die Verwendung eines leitfähigen Schaums oder Fasermaterials (z.B. Filz) als Elektrodenmaterial können die spezifische Oberfläche gesteigert und damit bestimmte elektrochemische Reaktionen verbessert werden.
Eine bevorzugte dreidimensionale Elektrode gemäß vorliegender Erfindung umfasst Kohlenstoffschaum, auch bezeichnet als „Reticulated Vitreous Carbon foam".
Eine bevorzugte dreidimensionale Elektrode gemäß vorliegender Erfindung umfasst Kohlenstofffilz, auch bezeichnet als „Carbon feit".
In einer Elektrode gemäß vorliegender Erfindung sind die Mittel, die es erlauben, den Elektrolyten im Elektrodenraum zu begasen, bevorzugt derart angeordnet, dass der Elektrolyt und die Elektrode begast werden können. Umfasst eine Elektrode gemäß vorliegender Erfindung eine Elektrodenschüttung, sind die Mittel bevorzugt derart angeordnet, dass der Elektrolyt und die gesamte Breite und Länge der Elektrodenschüttung begast werden können; bevorzugt erfolgt die Begasung von unten nach oben erfolgt (wobei die Begriffe „unten" und „oben" unten und oben gemäß der Schwerkraft bedeuten).
Eine Elektrode gemäß vorliegender Erfindung liegt bevorzugt in einer Elektrolysezelle vor. Die beiden Elektrodenräume können durch einen Seperator getrennt sein oder die Elektrolysezelle kann als offene Zelle, das heißt ohne Trennung der Elektrodenräume, betrieben werden.
Eine Elektrolysezelle, die eine Elektrode gemäß vorliegender Erfindung enthält, kann beispielsweise Verwendung bei der elektrochemischen Umsetzung von Substraten finden.
Elektrochemische Umsetzungen von Substraten, in der Begasung wichtig ist, werden häufig in der Technik eingesetzt und umfassen beispielsweise die Herstellung von Fluor aus Flußsäure, oder stellen die Generierung von Wasserstoffperoxid durch die unvollständige Reduktion von Sauerstoff dar, oder die elektrochemischen Ozonerzeugung (Anodenreaktion: H2O + O2 → O3 + 2H+ + 2e~).
Eine Elektrode gemäß vorliegender Erfindung, ist eine Elektrode bevorzugt für Kathodenreaktionen.
Eine Elektrode gemäß vorliegender Erfindung wird bevorzugt, aber nicht ausschließlich, zur Herstellung von H2O2 eingesetzt. Dieser Reduktionsvorgang beruht auf einem 2- Elektronenübergang und führt über freie H+- Ionen zum H2O2: O2 + 2H+ + 2e~ -→ H2O2
Das während der Reduktion gebildete H2O2 kann entweder aus einem Reaktionsgefäß, das eine Elektrode gemäß vorliegender Erfindung enthält, abtransportiert werden, und beispielsweise als Oxidationsmittel Anwendung finden, oder das gebildete H2O2 kann, wie beschrieben in situ hergestellt und direkt im Reaktionsgefäß eingesetzt und verbraucht werden.
Anwendungen von den gebildeten Oxidationsmitteln, welche z.B. in einem Reaktionsgefäß in situ durch eine Elektrode gemäß vorliegender Erfindung hergestellt werden, umfassen beispielsweise die Anwendung als Bleichchemikalie, die Anwendung in der Trink- und Brauchwasseraufbereitung ,die Anwendung zur Desinfektion in Schwimmbädern und Wirlpools, die Abwassersanierung in der Reinigung industrieller Abwässer, oder die Anwendung zum Abbau von persistenten Substanzen.
Die Erfindung wird anhand der vorliegenden Ausfuhrungsbeispiele näher erläutert.
Beispiel 1
Ein Liter einer 0,05 M Na2SO4-Lösung mit einem pH-Wert von 3 ± 0,1 wird in den Versuchsaufbau, welcher wie folgt beschrieben werden kann, eingefüllt. Aus dem Laborreaktor wird über eine Schlauchpumpe die Lösung über einen Thermostaten in die Elektrolysezelle und wieder zurück in den Laborreaktor gepumpt. An der Anode liegt eine Stromdichte von 20 A/m2 an, die Temperatur wird konstant auf 25 °C gehalten.
Der erste Versuch wird ohne jegliche Begasung des Elektrolyten durchgeführt. Im zweiten Versuch wird, wie auch in der Literatur beschrieben, der Elektrolyt im Laborreaktor mit 20 l/h Luft bei 0,5 barü begast. Im dritten Versuch wird über kerzenförmige Gasfritten der Elektrolyt direkt im Kathodenraum mit 20 l/h Luft bei 0,5 barü begast.
Die Figur 1 zeigt ein Diagramm mit den erhaltenen Ergebnissen, und zwar die erzielte Wasserstoffeproxidkonzentration vs. Versuchsdauer; Elektrolyt: 0,05M Na2SO4- Lösung; Temperatur: 25°C; Begasung: Luft, 20 l/h, 0,5 barü; Stromdichte: 20 A/m2; pH- Wert: 3;
Versuchsvolumen: 1 1; Anode: Iridiummischoxid; Kathode: Glaskohlenstoffschüttung vor
Edelstahl.
Durch die Begasung der Kathodenschüttung kann eine eindeutig ersichtliche Verbesserung der kathodisch generierten Wasserstoffperoxidmenge erzielt werden. Im Vergleich zum
Versuch ohne jegliche Begasung zeigt sich dies in einer 30%igen Steigerung der
Wasserstoffperoxidkonzentration.
Claims
1. Elektrode, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass sie Mittel umfasst, die es erlauben, den Elektrolyten im Elektrodenraum zu begasen.
2. Elektrode nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Mittel Begasungsfritten umfassen.
3. Elektrode nach Anspruch 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Begasungsfritten Glasfritten umfassen.
4. Elektrode nach Anspruch 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Begasungsfritten Fritten aus PTFE umfassen.
5. Elektrode nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Mittel, die es erlauben, den Elektrolyten im Elektrodenraum zu begasen, mehrere Begasungsfritten umfassen.
6. Elektrode nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Mittel, die es erlauben, den Elektrolyten im Elektodenraum zu begasen eine kerzenformige Gestalt aufweisen.
7. Elektode nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 6, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Elektrode eine dreidimensionale Form umfasst.
8. Elektrode nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 7, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die dreidimensionale Form eine Schüttung, einen Schaum oder ein Fasermaterial umfasst.
9. Elektrode nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 8, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Elektodenschüttung granulierten Glaskohlenstoff umfasst.
10. Elektrode nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 9, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Mittel, die es erlauben, den Elektrolyten im Elektrodenraum zu begasen derart angeordnet sind, dass der Elektrolyt und die Elektrode begast werden können.
1 1. Elektrode nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 10, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Mittel, die es erlauben, den Elektrolyten im Elektrodenraum zu begasen, so angeordnet sind, dass der Elektrolyt und die gesamte Breite und Länge der dreidimensionalen Elektrode begast werden können.
12. Elektrode nach einem der Ansprüche 6 bis 11, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Mittel, die es erlauben, den Elektrolyten im Elektrodenraum zu begasen, so angeordnet sind, dass die Begasung der Elektrodenausschüttung von unten nach oben erfolgt.
13. Elektrolysezelle, enthaltend eine Elektrode nach einem der Anspruch 1 bis 12.
14. Verwendung einer Elektrolysezelle nach Anspruch 13, mit oder ohne Seperator zwischen den Elektrodenräumen.
15. Verwendung einer Elektrolysezelle nach Anspruch 13 bei der elektrochemischen und oxidativen Umsetzung von Substraten.
16. Verwendung nach Anspruch 13 zur Herstellung von Oxidationsmitteln wie H2O2 und Ozon.
17. Verwendung nach Anspruch 13, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass das Oxidationsmmittel in situ erzeugt wird und zum Abbau persistenter Substanzen, die auch in diesem Behälter vorliegen können, verwendet wird.
18. Verfahren zur elektrochemischen Herstellung von H2O2, dadurch gekennzeichnet dass eine Elektrolysezelle nach einem der Ansprüche 14 oder 15 verwendet wird.
19. Verwendung oder Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 14 bis 18, dadurch gekennzeichnet das zur Begasung Luft oder Sauerstoff eingesetzt wird.
20. Elektrode nach einem der Ansprüche 1-12, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass sie eine Kathode ist.
