Abstract

 偏光素子は、略針状の多数の金属ハロゲン化物微粒子がその長手方向が略一方向に向くように配向分散されたガラス基体を還元性雰囲気中で熱処理して金属ハロゲン化物微粒子を還元することによって、還元前に前記個々の金属ハロゲン化物微粒子が占めていた多数の領域内に生成された金属微粒子を有し、多数の領域のうち少なくとも一部の領域に存在する金属微粒子数が、領域毎に複数個であって、多数の領域の個々の体積が、金属ハロゲン化物微粒子の総数の90%以上において、2,500~2,500,000nmであり、領域毎に存在する複数個の金属微粒子の体積総和が、金属ハロゲン化物微粒子の総数の90%以上において、領域の体積の4~40%である。
