Abstract
画像信号処理装置(1)は、エッジ検出部(11)、動き検出部(12)および補正後画像データ出力部(13)を備える。エッジ検出部(11)は、入力される画像信号の各フレームの画像データによる画像におけるエッジを検出する。動き検出部(12)は、入力される画像信号の各フレームの画像データによる画像の動きの方向および速さを検出する。補正後画像データ出力部(13)は、入力される画像信号の各フレームの画像データのうち、エッジ検出部(11)により検出されたエッジに対して何れかの側の領域の画像データを、動き検出部(12)により検出された画像の動きの方向および速さに応じて補正して、その補正後の画像データを液晶表示装置(2)へ出力する。
Description
本発明は、入力される画像信号の各フレームの画像データを処理した後に該画像信号を液晶表示装置へ出力する画像信号処理装置に関するものである。
画像表示装置は、インパルス型表示装置とホールド型表示装置とに大別される。インパルス型表示装置の一例として挙げられるCRT(Cathode Ray Tube)では、電子銃により画面が走査されて電子ビームが到達した画素においてのみ表示がされる。これに対して、ホールド型表示装置の一例として挙げられる液晶表示装置や有機エレクトロルミネセンス表示装置では、画像信号のフレームが一定周期で更新され、或る第1フレームの画像の表示が指示されると、次の第2フレームの画像の表示が指示されるまで第1フレームの画像の表示が保持される。インパルス型表示装置と比較して、ホールド型表示装置は、画像歪みが生じ難い等の様々な特長を有している。
しかし、液晶表示装置は応答が遅いという問題を有している。すなわち、或るフレームの画像の目標表示値が指示されたときから、液晶表示装置における実際の表示値が目標表示値になるまで、時間を要する。その所要時間は、フレームが更新される周期を超える場合がある。したがって、動きが速い動画像が液晶表示装置の画面に表示される場合には、その動画像にボケが生じる場合がある。
このような問題を解決することを意図した技術としてオーバードライブ技術が知られている(特許文献1,2を参照)。オーバードライブ技術は、液晶表示装置の画面における或る画素に着目したとき、或る第1フレームにおける目標表示値に対応する画像データG1に対して、次の第2フレームにおける目標表示値に対応する画像データG2が異なる場合に、この画像データG2を補正して、その補正後の画像データG2'を液晶表示装置に与えるものである。この補正に際して、「G1<G2」であるときには「G2<G2'」とされ、「G1>G2」であるときには「G2>G2'」とされる。このように画像信号の各フレームの画像データを処理した後に該画像信号を液晶表示装置へ出力する画像信号処理装置が設けられることで、液晶表示装置における実際の表示値が目標表示値に速く達するようにされる。

上記特許文献1,2に開示されたオーバードライブ技術では、第2フレームの画像データを補正するために、この第2フレームより1つ前の第1フレームの画像データを記憶している。それ故、少なくとも1フレーム分の画像データを記憶することができる大容量の記憶装置を用いる必要があり、このような大容量の記憶装置を含む画像信号処理装置のコストが高い。
本発明は、上記問題点を解消する為になされたものであり、安価に構成され得る画像信号処理装置を提供することを目的とする。
本発明に係る画像信号処理装置は、入力される画像信号の各フレームの画像データを処理した後に該画像信号を液晶表示装置へ出力する画像信号処理装置であって、(1)入力される画像信号の各フレームの画像データによる画像におけるエッジを検出するエッジ検出部と、(2) 入力される画像信号の各フレームの画像データによる画像の動きの方向および速さを検出する動き検出部と、(3)入力される画像信号の各フレームの画像データのうち、エッジ検出部により検出されたエッジに対して何れかの側の領域の画像データを、動き検出部により検出された画像の動きの方向および速さに応じて補正して、その補正後の画像データを液晶表示装置へ出力する補正後画像データ出力部と、を備えることを特徴とする。
本発明に係る画像信号処理装置では、エッジ検出部により、入力される画像信号の各フレームの画像データによる画像におけるエッジが検出される。また、動き検出部により、入力される画像信号の各フレームの画像データによる画像の動きの方向および速さが検出される。そして、補正後画像データ出力部により、入力される画像信号の各フレームの画像データのうち、エッジ検出部により検出されたエッジに対して何れかの側の領域の画像データが、動き検出部により検出された画像の動きの方向および速さに応じて補正されて、その補正後の画像データが液晶表示装置へ出力される。
なお、上記の処理は、フレームの全体の画像データに対して行われてもよいが、画面に表示される画像のうち一部の領域のみが動画である場合には、その一部領域に対応する画像データに対してのみ行われてもよい。
本発明に係る画像信号処理装置は安価に構成され得る。

以下、添付図面を参照して、本発明を実施するための最良の形態を詳細に説明する。なお、図面の説明において同一の要素には同一の符号を付し、重複する説明を省略する。
図1は、本実施形態に係る画像信号処理装置1の構成を示す図である。画像信号処理装置1は、入力される画像信号の各フレームの画像データを処理した後に該画像信号を液晶表示装置2へ出力するものであり、エッジ検出部11、動き検出部12および補正後画像データ出力部13を備える。なお、カラー画像である場合には、そのうちの1色の画像データについて以下に説明するが、他の色の画像データについても同様である。
エッジ検出部11は、入力される画像信号の各フレームの画像データによる画像におけるエッジを検出し、その検出結果を補正後画像データ出力部13へ出力する。また、動き検出部12は、入力される画像信号の各フレームの画像データによる画像の動きの方向および速さを検出し、その検出結果を補正後画像データ出力部13へ出力する。エッジ検出部11によるエッジ検出および動き検出部12による動き検出の対象となる画像は、フレームの全体の画像であってもよいが、その全体画像のうちの一部領域の画像であってもよく、また、動きがない又は小さい背景画像の中において動きがある画像であってもよい。
エッジ検出部11は、画像信号の各フレームの画像データのうち隣り合う2つの画素の画像データの差が所定の閾値より大きいときに、これら2つの画素の間にエッジが存在すると判定することができる。
動き検出部12による動き検出のアルゴリズムとして、様々なものが知られており、例えばマッチング法が用いられる。すなわち、動き検出部12は、前フレームの画像のうちの或る領域A1の画像データが現フレームの画像のうちの何れかの領域の画像データと一致するか否かを判定し、現フレームの画像のうちで一致した領域A2がある場合に、領域A1から領域A2への動きの方向および距離を画素単位で検出することで、画像の動きの方向および速さを検出する。また、動き検出部12は、エッジ検出部11により検出されたエッジの動きの方向および速さを検出してもよい。
補正後画像データ出力部13は、入力される画像信号の各フレームの画像データのうち、エッジ検出部11により検出されたエッジに対して何れかの側の領域の画像データを、動き検出部12により検出された画像の動きの方向および速さに応じて補正して、その補正後の画像データを液晶表示装置2へ出力する。
図2~図4それぞれは、本実施形態に係る画像信号処理装置1に含まれる補正後画像データ出力部13から出力される補正後の画像データ等の一例を説明する図である。各図(a)~(c)の横軸は、フレームの画像における或るライン上の画素位置を示す。このライン方向は、動き検出部12により検出される画像の動きの方向である。各図(a)は、入力される画像信号の或る第1フレームの画像データのうち該ライン上の画像データG1の(輝度)分布を示す。各図(b)は、次の第2フレームの画像データのうち該ライン上の画像データG2の(輝度)分布を示す。また、各図(c)は、補正後画像データ出力部13から出力される補正後画像データのうち該ライン上の補正後画像データの(輝度)分布を示す。
図2では、動き検出部12により検出される画像(またはエッジ)の動きの方向はライン上で右方向であり、その動きの速さは1フレーム当たり1画素である。図3では、動き検出部12により検出される画像(またはエッジ)の動きの方向はライン上で左方向であり、その動きの速さは1フレーム当たり1画素である。また、図4では、動き検出部12により検出される画像(またはエッジ)の動きの方向はライン上で右方向であり、その動きの速さは1フレーム当たり3画素である。以下では、図2,図3で中央にある1個の画素に注目し、図4で中央にある3個の画素に注目する。
図2(a),(b)に示されるように、動き検出部12により検出される画像(またはエッジ)の動きの方向がライン上で右方向であって、その動きの速さが1フレーム当たり1画素である場合、同図(a)中のエッジと同図(b)中のエッジとに挟まれた1個の注目画素については、第1フレームでの画素データG1と比べて次の第2フレームでの画素データG2が大きいので、補正後画像データ出力部13から出力される注目画素の補正後画像データG2'は画像データG2より大きい値とされる(同図(c))。
図3(a),(b)に示されるように、動き検出部12により検出される画像(またはエッジ)の動きの方向がライン上で左方向であって、その動きの速さが1フレーム当たり1画素である場合、同図(a)中のエッジと同図(b)中のエッジとに挟まれた1個の注目画素については、第1フレームでの画素データG1と比べて次の第2フレームでの画素データG2が小さいので、補正後画像データ出力部13から出力される注目画素の補正後画像データG2'は画像データG2より小さい値とされる(同図(c))。
図4(a),(b)に示されるように、動き検出部12により検出される画像(またはエッジ)の動きの方向がライン上で右方向であって、その動きの速さが1フレーム当たり3画素である場合、同図(a)中のエッジと同図(b)中のエッジとに挟まれた3個の注目画素については、第1フレームでの画素データG1と比べて次の第2フレームでの画素データG2が大きいので、補正後画像データ出力部13から出力される注目画素の補正後画像データG2'は画像データG2より大きい値とされる(同図(c))。
一般に、補正後画像データ出力部13は、動き検出部12により検出される画像(またはエッジ)の動きの方向がライン上で右方向であって、その動きの速さが1フレーム当たりN画素である場合、入力される画像信号の各フレームの画像データのうち、エッジ検出部11により検出されたエッジに対して左側の領域(エッジからN画素分の範囲の領域)の画像データを補正する。また、補正後画像データ出力部13は、動き検出部12により検出される画像(またはエッジ)の動きの方向がライン上で左方向であって、その動きの速さが1フレーム当たりN画素である場合、入力される画像信号の各フレームの画像データのうち、エッジ検出部11により検出されたエッジに対して右側の領域(エッジからN画素分の範囲の領域)の画像データを補正する。補正によって画像データを増加または減少させるに際して、エッジの両側の各領域の画像データが参照される。
換言すれば、補正後画像データ出力部13は、動き検出部12により検出される画像の動きの方向が第1方向であって、その動きの速さが、1フレーム当たりN画素である場合、入力される画像信号の各フレームの画像データのうち、今回のフレームにおいて、エッジ検出部11により検出されたエッジに対して第1方向とは逆側の領域のN画素分の画像データの大きさを、前回のフレームからの変化が強調されるように補正している。
そして、補正後画像データ出力部13は、その補正後の画像データを液晶表示装置2へ出力する。このようなオーバードライブ技術に基づいて補正された後の画像データG2'が液晶表示装置2に入力されることで、液晶表示装置2における実際の表示値が目標表示値に速く達するようにされる。
本実施形態に係る画像信号処理装置1は、画像が横方向に動いているときには、1ライン毎に処理をすることができるので、入力される画像信号の現フレームの画像データを1ライン分だけ順次に記憶して処理すればよい。また、本実施形態に係る画像信号処理装置1は、画像が縦方向に動いているときにも、入力される画像信号の現フレームの画像データを数ライン分だけ順次に記憶して処理すればよい。したがって、画像信号処理装置1は、記憶容量が少ない記憶部を用いればよいので、安価に構成され得る。
本発明は、入力される画像信号の各フレームの画像データを処理した後に該画像信号を液晶表示装置へ出力する画像信号処理装置に利用することができる。
Claims (2)
- 入力される画像信号の各フレームの画像データを処理した後に該画像信号を液晶表示装置へ出力する画像信号処理装置であって、
入力される前記画像信号の各フレームの画像データによる画像におけるエッジを検出するエッジ検出部と、
入力される前記画像信号の各フレームの画像データによる画像の動きの方向および速さを検出する動き検出部と、
入力される前記画像信号の各フレームの画像データのうち、前記エッジ検出部により検出されたエッジに対して何れかの側の領域の画像データを、前記動き検出部により検出された画像の動きの方向および速さに応じて補正して、その補正後の画像データを前記液晶表示装置へ出力する補正後画像データ出力部と、
を備えることを特徴とする画像信号処理装置。 - 前記補正後画像データ出力部は、
前記動き検出部により検出される画像の動きの方向が第1方向であって、その動きの速さが、1フレーム当たりN画素である場合、入力される画像信号の各フレームの画像データのうち、今回のフレームにおいて、前記エッジ検出部により検出されたエッジに対して前記第1方向とは逆側の領域のN画素分の画像データの大きさを、前回のフレームからの変化が強調されるように、補正する、
ことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の画像信号処理装置。
