- the signal processing / servo control unit 4 issues a tracking error signal detection instruction and determines whether the level does not reach a predetermined range. Instead of determining that there is no signal, it is also possible to determine that there is no data recording even when a tracking operation command (tracking on) is performed and tracking on is impossible (tracking OFF).
- the data read control is performed by performing tracking servo control and focus servo control.

It is determined that the DVD 1 that has been read is a blank disc of the DVD Download standard (step S17).
- the optical disc apparatus stops the reproduction operation or performs processing such as ejection by determining that the DVD 1 is a blank disc (step S18). If a tracking error signal is detected in step S16, or if tracking is not turned off in step S14, data is recorded in the data zone, so that DVD1 is determined to be a DVD-ROM. (Step S20), the process proceeds to the reproduction operation (Step S21).

It is determined whether information that is logically a DVD-ROM is detected in this lead-in zone (step S32). Whether this disk is logically a DVD-ROM can be determined by the fact that the information indicating that it is a DVD-ROM is mounted as the book type information in the lead-in zone.
- disc information other than DVD-ROM is recorded in the Book Type in the lead-in zone of the DVD 1 to be inspected, it is described as DVD-R, DVD-RW, etc., and is judged to be those discs (Step S39).
- the optical disk apparatus moves the optical pickup 3 to the data zone, and the data Data in the zone is read (step S33). For example, since address 30000h is the start address of the data zone, data is read from address 30000h.
- the signal processing / servo control unit 4 also detects a tracking error signal (TE signal) by a phase difference method (DPD differential phase detection), and when a tracking error signal exceeding a predetermined amplitude (level) is not detected.
- the signal processing / servo control unit 4 outputs an output indicating that there is no tracking error signal to the disc determination unit 5 (step S34).
- each track When data is recorded in the data zone, each track is recorded as a pit whose data content indicates “1” or “0”, and by detecting this pit, the normal tracking error signal has a predetermined width. Amplitude variation, for example, a sawtooth waveform having an output fluctuation width of several hundred milliV.
- Amplitude variation for example, a sawtooth waveform having an output fluctuation width of several hundred milliV.
- no pit is formed, so that only a minute level signal is detected as the tracking error signal.
- the signal processing / servo control unit 4 outputs that there is no tracking error signal.
- the signal processing / servo control unit 4 If the signal processing / servo control unit 4 cannot detect the tracking error signal by the DPD method, the signal processing / servo control unit 4 changes the tracking error detection method to the push-pull method to detect the tracking error. And a wobble signal is detected from the output of a predetermined bandpass filter to determine whether a wobble groove exists (steps S35 and S36).
- the wobble frequency is defined as about twice that of a normal DVD-R. Therefore, the wobble groove can be detected even if a conventional band-pass filter for detecting the wobble groove of DVD-R is used.
- DVD-ROM does not have a wobble groove (wobble frequency).
- the loaded DVD 1 is logically determined to be a DVD-ROM and a wobble groove is detected, it is found that it is a download DVD standard blank disc. If there is no wobble groove, it can be determined that the disc is a DVD-ROM.
- the disc determination unit 5 determines that the DVD 1 to be inspected is a blank disc of the DVD Download standard. (Step S37). If it is determined that the disc is a blank disc, the disc reproduction operation is stopped, or a process such as ejection is performed (step S38). If the tracking error signal is detected or if the wobble signal is not detected, it is determined that the DVD 1 is a DVD-ROM (step S40), and the process proceeds to the reproduction operation (step S41).
- the third embodiment it is possible to reliably determine whether or not the DVD 1 is a blank disc of the DVD Download standard.
- An identification function of information that the disk to be inspected is logically a DVD-ROM, an identification function of the presence or absence of a tracking error signal by the DPD method, an identification function of whether or not there is a wobble groove by the push-pull method, Based on these identification results, by installing a control program that realizes a discriminating function for discriminating that the disc is a DVD Download standard blank disc, the DVD playback device discriminates that the disc is a DVD Download standard blank disc. It is possible to determine that the disc is a DVD Download standard blank disc without causing malfunction or the like.
- a control program can be easily installed in the information processing apparatus by being recorded on a recording medium such as a CD-ROM. Further, the control program can be installed in the information processing apparatus via a network.
