Abstract
アノード(11、12)と、カソード(13、14)と、アノード(11、12)とカソード(13、14)とに挟持された電解質膜(15)とからなる膜電極接合体(10)と、アノード(11、12)に接するアノード導電層(16)と、カソード(13、14)に接するカソード導電層(17)と、膜電極接合体(10)のアノード(11、12)側に配置され、アノード(11、12)に燃料を供給するための燃料供給機構(40)と、を備えた燃料電池であって、膜電極接合体(10)は、単体の状態ではアノード(11、12)側に凸の形状を有する燃料電池である。
Description
本発明は燃料電池に関し、特に液体燃料を用いた燃料電池に関する。
近年、ノートパソコンや携帯電話等の各種携帯用電子機器を長時間充電しないで使用可能とするために、これら携帯用電子機器の電源に燃料電池を用いる試みがなされている。燃料電池は燃料と空気を供給するだけで発電することができ、燃料を補給すれば連続して長時間発電することが可能であるという特徴を有している。このため、燃料電池を小型化できれば、携帯用電子機器の電源として極めて有利なシステムといえる。
直接メタノール型燃料電池(Direct Methanol Fuel Cell:DMFC)は小型化が可能であり、さらに燃料の取り扱いも容易であるため、携帯用電子機器の電源として期待されている。
DMFCにおける液体燃料の供給方式としては、気体供給型や液体供給型等のアクティブ方式、また燃料収容部内の液体燃料を電池内部で気化させて燃料極に供給する内部気化型等のパッシブ方式が知られている。
アノードに燃料を供給する手段としては、さまざまな方法が採用可能である。例えば、メタノール水溶液等の液体燃料を、アノード導電層の下に直接流通させる方式や、燃料電池の外部で、メタノール等を蒸発させて気体燃料を生じ、その気体燃料をアノード導電層の下に流通させる外部気化型、燃料収容部に純メタノールやメタノール水溶液等の液体燃料を収容し、液体燃料を電池内部で気化させてアノードに供給する内部気化型等が考えられる。
また、カソードに酸化剤である空気を供給する手段としては、空気をファンやブロワにより強制的に供給するアクティブ型や、大気からの自然拡散のみにより供給する自発呼吸(パッシブ)型などが考えられる。
これらのうち、内部気化型等のパッシブ方式はDMFCの小型化に対して特に有利である。パッシブ型DMFCにおいては、例えば燃料極、電解質膜および空気極を有する膜電極接合体(燃料電池セル)を、樹脂製の箱状容器からなる燃料収容部上に配置した構造が提案されている(例えば国際公開第2005/112172号パンフレット参照)。膜電極接合体は、燃料極側に配置されるアノード導電層と、空気極側に配置されるカソード導電層とに挟持されている。
膜電極接合体と、アノード導電層およびカソード導電層との間の電気的な接続は、通常、導電性物質同士の平面的な接触によって行なわれる。この電気的な接触を確保するためには、アノード導電層およびカソード導電層が、膜電極接合体に対して一定以上の圧力で押さえられている必要がある。
ところが、膜電極接合体において発電反応を行なうと、膜電極接合体の温度が上昇し、そのために燃料電池を構成する部材が熱膨張したり、或いは発電反応によってCO2等のガスが生じるために燃料電池内の圧力が高まったりすることにより、膜電極接合体を厚さ方向に押さえる圧力が減少し、膜電極接合体と、アノード導電層およびカソード導電層との間の接触抵抗が増加する場合があった。このように膜電極接合体とアノード導電層およびカソード導電層との間の接触抵抗が増加すると、オーム損のために燃料電池から得られる電力が減少することになる。
上記のような電力減少を防止するために、燃料電池を構成する部材の厚さや強度を増加し、部材の熱膨張やガス圧力の増加を生じても部材の変形を生じにくくすることにより、膜電極接合体を厚さ方向に押さえる圧力の減少を最小限にすることが行なわれてきた。しかしこのようにすると、燃料電池全体の重量や体積が増加する場合があり、燃料電池を携帯機器の電源として用いるためには必ずしも好ましいものではなかった。
本発明は、上記の問題点を鑑みてなされたものであって、膜電極接合体と導電層との接触を良好に保つとともに、高い出力を得られる燃料電池を提供することを目的とする。
本発明の第1態様による燃料電池は、アノードと、カソードと、前記アノードと前記カソードとに挟持された電解質膜とからなる膜電極接合体と、前記アノードに接するアノード導電層と、前記カソードに接するカソード導電層と、前記膜電極接合体の前記アノード側に配置され、前記アノードに燃料を供給するための燃料供給機構と、を備えた燃料電池であって、前記膜電極接合体は、燃料電池として組み込まれる前の単体の状態ではアノード側に凸の形状を有する。
本発明の第2態様による燃料電池の製造方法は、アノードを形成する工程と、カソードを形成する工程と、電解質膜を形成する工程と、前記アノードと、前記カソードと、前記電解質膜のうち少なくとも2つ以上を接合して膜電極接合体を形成する接合工程と、前記膜電極接合体と、前記アノードに接するアノード導電層と、前記カソードに接するカソード導電層と、前記膜電極接合体の前記アノード側に配置され、前記アノードに燃料を供給するための燃料供給機構と、を備えた燃料電池に組み込む組み込み工程と、を少なくとも備え、前記接合工程は、前記アノード側に凸となる反り形状とするプレス工程を備えている。
本発明の第3態様による燃料電池は、アノードと、カソードと、前記アノードと前記カソードとに挟持された電解質膜とからなる膜電極接合体と、前記アノードに接するアノード導電層と、前記カソードに接するカソード導電層と、前記膜電極接合体の前記アノード側に配置され、前記アノードに燃料を供給するための燃料供給機構と、を備えた燃料電池であって、前記膜電極接合体は、燃料電池として組み込まれる前の単体の状態ではカソード側に凸の形状を有する。
本発明の第4態様による燃料電池の製造方法は、アノードを形成する工程と、カソードを形成する工程と、電解質膜を形成する工程と、前記アノードと、前記カソードと、前記電解質膜のうち少なくとも2つ以上を接合して膜電極接合体を形成する接合工程と、前記膜電極接合体と、前記アノードに接するアノード導電層と、前記カソードに接するカソード導電層と、前記膜電極接合体の前記アノード側に配置され、前記アノードに燃料を供給するための燃料供給機構と、を備えた燃料電池に組み込む組み込み工程と、を少なくとも備え、前記接合工程は、前記カソード側に凸となる反り形状とするプレス工程を備えている。
以下に、本発明の一実施形態に係る燃料電池について図面を参照して説明する。図1に示すように、本実施形態に係る燃料電池は膜電極接合体10を有している。膜電極接合体10は、アノード(燃料極)と、カソード(空気極)と、アノードとカソードとの間に挟持された電解質膜15とを有している。
アノードは、アノードガス拡散層12と、アノードガス拡散層12上に配置されたアノード触媒層11とを有している。カソードは、カソードガス拡散層14と、カソードガス拡散層14上に配置されたカソード触媒層13とを有している。膜電極接合体10のアノード側にはアノード導電層16が配置されている。また膜電極接合体10のカソード側にはカソード導電層17が配置されている。
本実施形態に係る燃料電池では、アノードは、例えば以下の製法により製造される。まず、アノード用触媒粒子(Pt:Ru=1:1)を担持したカーボンブラックに、プロトン伝導性樹脂としてパーフルオロカーボンスルホン酸溶液と、分散媒として水およびメトキシプロパノールを添加し、アノード用触媒粒子を担持したカーボンブラックを分散させてペーストを調製した。
上記のようにして得られたペーストを、アノードガス拡散層12としての多孔質カーボンペーパ(例えば、40mm×30mmの長方形)に塗布することにより、厚さが100μmのアノード触媒層11を形成することができる。
本実施形態に係る燃料電池では、カソードは、例えば以下の製法により製造される。まず、カソード用触媒粒子(Pt)を担持したカーボンブラックに、プロトン伝導性樹脂としてパーフルオロカーボンスルホン酸溶液と、分散媒として水およびメトキシプロパノールを添加し、カソード用触媒粒子を担持したカーボンブラックを分散させてペーストを調製した。
上記のようにして得られたペーストを、カソードガス拡散層14としての多孔質カーボンペーパに塗布することにより、例えば厚さが100μmのカソード触媒層13を形成することができる。
なお、本実施形態に係る燃料電池では、アノードガス拡散層12と、カソードガス拡散層14とは、略同形同大で厚さも略等しく、これらのガス拡散層に塗布されたアノード触媒層11およびカソード触媒層13も略同形同大である。
上記したように形成したアノード触媒層11とカソード触媒層13との間に、電解質膜15として例えば厚さが30μmで、含水率が10~20重量%のパーフルオロカーボンスルホン酸膜(商品名:nafion膜、デュポン社製)を配置し、アノード触媒層11とカソード触媒層13とが対向するように位置を合わせた状態で、ホットプレスを施すことにより、アノード側に凸となる反り形状となる膜電極接合体10を製造した。
なお、膜電極接合体10をアノード側に凸となる反り形状とする方法は、上記のようにホットプレスを施す方法に限られない。例えば、アノードの膨潤率がカソードの膨潤率よりも大きくなる材料で膜電極接合体10を形成することにより、膜電極接合体10をアノード側に凸となる反り形状としても良い。
アノードおよびカソードの膨潤率の違いは以下の方法によって確認することができる。
製品から膜電極接合体を取り出し、その全部または一部(少なくとも面積1cm2以上)について以下の操作を行なう。
膜電極接合体にアノードガス拡散層またはカソードガス拡散層の少なくとも一方または両方が設けられている場合は、それらを剥離する。もしくは機械的に測定対象ではない側を切削することにより除去する。
アノードガス拡散層およびカソードガス拡散層を剥離・除去した膜電極接合体は、電解質膜の一方の面にアノード触媒層、他方の面にカソード触媒層が付着した状態になっているので、この状態で、以下の操作を行なう。
前記の剥離・除去後の膜電極接合体を、温度25℃、相対湿度30%の環境に24時間以上置いた後の状態と、温度25℃、相対湿度100%の環境に24時間以上置いた後の状態とを比較する。
両者の形状(膜電極接合体の反りの方向および「たわみ量」の値)が同じであれば、アノード触媒層とカソード触媒層の膨潤率は等しいと判断できる。
下記(A)~(C)のうちの少なくとも一つに該当する場合には、アノード触媒層の膨潤率がカソード触媒層の膨潤率よりも大きいと判断できる。
(A)両者が共にアノード側に凸となる反り形状であり、かつ、相対湿度100%の環境に置いた後の膜電極接合体のたわみ量が、相対湿度30%の環境に置いた後のたわみ量よりも大きい。
(B)両者が共にカソード側に凸となる反り形状であり、かつ、相対湿度100%の環境に置いた後の膜電極接合体のたわみ量が、相対湿度30%の環境に置いた後のたわみ量よりも小さい。
(C)相対湿度30%の環境に置いた後の膜電極接合体が平面状またはカソード側に凸となる反り形状であり、相対湿度100%の環境に置いた後の膜電極接合体がアノード側に凸となる反り形状である。
また、下記(D)~(F)のうちの少なくとも一つに該当する場合には、カソード触媒層の膨潤率がアノード触媒層の膨潤率よりも大きいと判断できる。
(D)両者が共にカソード側に凸となる反り形状であり、かつ、相対湿度100%の環境に置いた後の膜電極接合体のたわみ量が、相対湿度30%の環境に置いた後のたわみ量よりも大きい。
(E)両者が共にアノード側に凸となる反り形状であり、かつ、相対湿度100%の環境に置いた後の膜電極接合体のたわみ量が、相対湿度30%の環境に置いた後のたわみ量よりも小さい。
(F)相対湿度30%の環境に置いた後の膜電極接合体が平面状またはアノード側に凸となる反り形状であり、相対湿度100%の環境に置いた後の膜電極接合体がカソード側に凸となる反り形状である。
また、アノードの熱膨張率がカソードの熱膨張率よりも大きくなる材料で膜電極接合体10を形成することにより、膜電極接合体10をアノード側に凸となる反り形状としても良い。
アノードおよびカソードの熱膨張率の違いは以下の方法によって確認することができる。製品から膜電極接合体を取り出し、その全部または一部(少なくとも面積1cm2以上)について以下の操作を行なう。
膜電極接合体にアノードガス拡散層またはカソードガス拡散層の少なくとも一方または両方が設けられている場合は、それらを剥離する。もしくは機械的に測定対象ではない側を切削することにより除去する。
アノードガス拡散層およびカソードガス拡散層を剥離・除去した膜電極接合体は、電解質膜の一方の面にアノード触媒層、他方の面にカソード触媒層が付着した状態になっているので、この状態で、以下の操作を行なう。
前記の剥離・除去後の膜電極接合体を、温度5℃、相対湿度50%の環境に24時間以上置いた後の状態と、温度45℃、相対湿度50%の環境に24時間以上置いた後の状態とを比較する。
両者の形状(膜電極接合体の反りの方向および「たわみ量」の値)が同じであれば、アノード触媒層とカソード触媒層の熱膨張率は等しいと判断できる。
下記(a)~(c)のうちの少なくとも一つに該当する場合には、アノード触媒層の熱膨張率がカソード触媒層の熱膨張率よりも大きいと判断できる。
(a)両者が共にアノード側に凸となる反り形状であり、かつ、温度45℃の環境に置いた後の膜電極接合体のたわみ量が、温度5℃の環境に置いた後のたわみ量よりも大きい。
(b)両者が共にカソード側に凸となる反り形状であり、かつ、温度45℃の環境に置いた後の膜電極接合体のたわみ量が、温度5℃の環境に置いた後のたわみ量よりも小さい。
(c)温度5℃の環境に置いた後の膜電極接合体が平面状またはカソード側に凸となる反り形状であり、温度45℃の環境に置いた後の膜電極接合体がアノード側に凸となる反り形状である。
また、下記(d)~(f)のうちの少なくとも一つに該当する場合には、カソード触媒層の熱膨張率がアノード触媒層の熱膨張率よりも大きいと判断できる。
(d)両者が共にカソード側に凸となる反り形状であり、かつ、温度45℃の環境に置いた後の膜電極接合体のたわみ量が、温度5℃の環境に置いた後のたわみ量よりも大きい。
(e)両者が共にアノード側に凸となる反り形状であり、かつ、温度45℃の環境に置いた後の膜電極接合体のたわみ量が、温度5℃の環境に置いた後のたわみ量よりも小さい。
(f)温度5℃の環境に置いた後の膜電極接合体が平面状またはアノード側に凸となる反り形状であり、温度45℃の環境に置いた後の膜電極接合体がカソード側に凸となる反り形状である。
なお、上記のように、アノードの膨潤率あるいは熱膨張率をカソードよりも大きくする場合には、アノードまたはカソードに溝を設けて、膜電極接合体10が反った形状となりやすくしても良い。
本実施形態に係る燃料電池では、膜電極接合体10において、電解質膜15のうち、アノード触媒層11とカソード触媒層13にともに接しておらず、かつ以下で述べるOリング18の内側に相当する位置に、直径0.5mmのガス排出孔(図示せず)を2箇所に設けても良い。
続いて、この膜電極接合体10を、複数の開孔(図示せず)を有するアノード導電層16およびカソード導電層17をそれぞれアノードガス拡散層12のアノード触媒層11の反対の面、およびカソードガス拡散層14のカソード触媒層13の反対の面に配置した。
これらアノード導電層16およびカソード導電層17は、例えば、金、ニッケルなどの金属材料からなる多孔質層(例えばメッシュ)または箔体、あるいはステンレス鋼(SUS)などの導電性金属材料に金などの良導電性金属を被覆した複合材などをそれぞれ使用することができる。
なお、電解質膜15とアノード導電層16との間、電解質膜15とカソード導電層17との間には、それぞれゴム製のOリング18を挟持させて膜電極接合体10にシールを施した。
カソード導電層17の上には、保湿層20として、厚さが1.0mmで、透気度が2.0秒/100cm3(JIS P-8117に規定の測定方法による)で、透湿度が2000g/(m2・24h)(JIS L-1099 A-1に規定の測定方法による)、ショア硬度がD44のポリエチレン製多孔質フィルムを、長さ44mm、幅34mmの長方形に切り、積層した。
外気からカソードに供給される空気は、この保湿層20を透過することとなる。また、この保湿層20は、反りを有する形状の膜電極接合体10と、カソード導電層17との間に適度な圧力を加え、電気的な接触抵抗を低減する役割も果たす。そのため、保湿板のショア硬度はD35以上D55以下であることが望ましい。
なお、ショア硬度が低すぎると、膜電極接合体10とカソード導電層17との間に加えられる圧力が低くなるために接触抵抗が増加し、一方で、ショア硬度が高すぎると膜電極接合体とカソード導電層17の局部にのみ大きな圧力が加わり、他の部分は加えられる圧力が低下するために、やはり接触抵抗が増加する。
すなわち、保湿層20のショア硬度D35以上D55以下とすることによって、膜電極接合体10とカソード導電層17との間、および、膜電極接合体10とアノード導電層16との間の接触がより良好となる。
この保湿層20の上に、直径3mmの円形の空気導入口24を均等に48個形成した、厚さ1.0mmのステンレス板(SUS304)を、表面カバー23として積層した。
膜電極接合体10のアノード側には、燃料分配層30に液体燃料Fを供給するための燃料供給機構40が配置されている。燃料供給機構40は、図1に示すように、燃料収容部41と、燃料供給部42と、流路43とを主に備える。燃料収容部41には、膜電極接合体10(燃料電池セル)に対応した液体燃料Fが収容されている。液体燃料Fとしては、各種濃度のメタノール水溶液や純メタノール等のメタノール燃料が挙げられる。
ここで、液体燃料Fは、必ずしもメタノール燃料に限られるものではない。液体燃料Fは、例えばエタノール水溶液や純エタノール等のエタノール燃料、プロパノール水溶液や純プロパノール等のプロパノール燃料、グリコール水溶液や純グリコール等のグリコール燃料、ジメチルエーテル、ギ酸、その他の液体燃料であってもよい。いずれにしても、燃料収容部41には、燃料電池セルに応じた液体燃料が収容される。
燃料供給部42は、配管等で構成される液体燃料Fの流路43を介して燃料収容部41と接続されている。燃料供給部42には、燃料収容部41から流路43を介して液体燃料Fが導入され、導入された液体燃料Fおよび/またはこの液体燃料Fが気化した気化成分は、燃料分配層30およびアノード導電層16を介して膜電極接合体10に供給される。
流路43は、燃料供給部42や燃料収容部41と独立した配管に限られるものではない。例えば、燃料供給部42や燃料収容部41を積層して一体化する場合、これらを繋ぐ液体燃料Fの流路であってもよい。すなわち、燃料供給部42は、流路43等を介して燃料収容部41と連通されていればよい。
燃料収容部41に収容された液体燃料Fは、重力を利用して流路43を介して燃料供給部42まで落下させて送液することができる。また、流路43に多孔体等を充填して、毛細管現象により燃料収容部41に収容された液体燃料Fを燃料供給部42まで送液してもよい。さらに、流路43の一部にポンプを介在させて、燃料収容部41に収容された液体燃料Fを燃料供給部42まで強制的に送液してもよい。
燃料分配層30は、例えば、複数の開口部31が形成された平板で構成され、アノードガス拡散層12と燃料供給部42との間に挟持される。この燃料分配層30は、液体燃料Fの気化成分や液体燃料Fを透過させない材料で構成され、具体的には、例えば、ポリエチレンテレフタレート(PET)樹脂、ポリエチレンナフタレート(PEN)樹脂、ポリイミド系樹脂等で構成される。
また、燃料分配層30は、例えば、液体燃料Fの気化成分と液体燃料Fとを分離し、その気化成分を膜電極接合体10側へ透過させる気液分離膜で構成されてもよい。気液分離膜には、例えば、シリコーンゴム、低密度ポリエチレン(LDPE)薄膜、ポリ塩化ビニル(PVC)薄膜、ポリエチレンテレフタレート(PET)薄膜、フッ素樹脂(たとえばポリテトラフルオロエチレン(PTFE)、テトラフルオロエチレン・パーフルオロアルキルビニルエーテル共重合体(PFA)など)微多孔膜などが用いられる。
[実施例]
以下、本発明の実施例にかかる燃料電池について図面を参照して以下に説明する。なお、以下の説明において、前述の実施形態に係る燃料電池と同様の構成には同一の符号を付して説明を省略する。

(第1実施例)
第1実施例にかかる燃料電池の膜電極接合体10について以下に説明する。すなわち、アノード用触媒粒子(Pt:Ru=1:1)を担持したカーボンブラックに、プロトン伝導性樹脂としてパーフルオロカーボンスルホン酸溶液と、分散媒として水およびメトキシプロパノールを添加し、アノード用触媒粒子を担持したカーボンブラックを分散させてペーストを調製した。
第1実施例にかかる燃料電池の膜電極接合体10について以下に説明する。すなわち、アノード用触媒粒子(Pt:Ru=1:1)を担持したカーボンブラックに、プロトン伝導性樹脂としてパーフルオロカーボンスルホン酸溶液と、分散媒として水およびメトキシプロパノールを添加し、アノード用触媒粒子を担持したカーボンブラックを分散させてペーストを調製した。
上記のようにして得られたペーストをアノードガス拡散層12としての多孔質カーボンペーパ(40mm×30mmの長方形)に塗布することにより、厚さが100μmのアノード触媒層11を形成した。
このアノード触媒層11における、プロトン伝導性樹脂の重量比率は30重量%で、このアノード触媒層11を純水に浸漬したときの、下式で示される面積膨潤率は、3%であった。
(面積膨潤率)(%)=((純水浸漬後の面積)-(純水浸漬前の面積))/(純水浸漬前の面積)
なお、アノードガス拡散層12として用いた多孔質カーボンペーパは、厚さが370μmで、曲げ強度40MPa、曲げ弾性率10GPaであった。

カソード用触媒粒子(Pt)を担持したカーボンブラックに、プロトン伝導性樹脂としてパーフルオロカーボンスルホン酸溶液と、分散媒として水およびメトキシプロパノールを添加し、カソード用触媒粒子を担持したカーボンブラックを分散させてペーストを調製した。
上記のようにして得られたペーストをカソードガス拡散層14としての多孔質カーボンペーパに塗布することにより、厚さが100μmのカソード触媒層13を形成した。カソード触媒層13における、プロトン伝導性樹脂の重量比率は30重量%で、このカソード触媒層13を純水に浸漬したときの面積膨潤率は3%であった。
なお、アノードガス拡散層12と、カソードガス拡散層14とは、同形同大で厚さも等しく、これらのガス拡散層に塗布されたアノード触媒層11およびカソード触媒層13も同形同大である。
上記したように作製したアノード触媒層11とカソード触媒層13との間に、電解質膜15として厚さが30μmで、含水率が10~20重量%のパーフルオロカーボンスルホン酸膜(商品名:nafion膜、デュポン社製)を配置し、アノード触媒層11とカソード触媒層13とが対向するように位置を合わせた状態で、3MPaの圧力でホットプレスを施すことにより、膜電極接合体10を形成した。
このホットプレスを行なう際、アノード側に接するプレス用の金型を曲率半径101mmの単一凹曲面とし、カソード側に接するプレス用の金型を曲率半径101mmの単一凸曲面とすることにより、図3に示すように膜電極接合体10の平面方向においてその長辺と略平行な方向であって、アノード側に凸となる方向D1に反った形状となる膜電極接合体10を形成した。なお、膜電極接合体10の長手方向中央におけるたわみ量は、2mmであった。
ここで、膜電極接合体10の長手方向中央部のたわみ量とは、図2に示すように、膜電極接合体10の長手方向中央部と、膜電極接合体10が反った形状となったことにより膜電極接合体10の厚さ方向(Z方向)における位置が最も変化した部分とのZ方向における距離である。
本実施例に係る燃料電池は、上記の膜電極接合体10以外の構成は、上述の実施形態に係る燃料電池と同様である。
上記したように形成した膜電極接合体10を有する燃料電池に、温度が25℃、相対湿度が50%の環境の下、純度99.9重量%の純メタノールを供給した。また、定電圧電源を接続して、燃料電池の出力電圧が0.3Vで一定になるように、燃料電池に流れる電流を制御し、このときに燃料電池から得られる出力密度を計測した。
ここで、燃料電池の出力密度(mW/cm2)とは、燃料電池に流れる電流密度(発電部の面積1cm2当りの電流値(mA/cm2))に燃料電池の出力電圧を乗じたものである。
また、発電部の面積とは、アノード触媒層11とカソード触媒層13とが対向している部分の面積である。本実施例では、アノード触媒層11とカソード触媒層13との面積が等しく、かつ完全に対向しているので、発電部の面積はこれらの触媒層11、13の面積に等しい。
また、この発電している状態の燃料電池に、周波数1kHzの交流インピーダンス測定器を接続して、インピーダンスを測定した。
(第2実施例)
本発明の第2実施例に係る燃料電池について以下に説明する。なお、以下の説明において、上述の第1実施例に係る燃料電池と同様の構成については同一の符号を付して説明を省略する。

アノード用触媒粒子(Pt:Ru=1:1)を担持したカーボンブラックに、プロトン伝導性樹脂としてパーフルオロカーボンスルホン酸溶液と、分散媒として水およびメトキシプロパノールを添加し、アノード用触媒粒子を担持したカーボンブラックを分散させてペーストを調製した。上記のようにして得られたペーストをアノードガス拡散層12としての多孔質カーボンペーパ(40mm×30mmの長方形)に塗布することにより、厚さが100μmのアノード触媒層11を形成した。
このアノード触媒層11における、プロトン伝導性樹脂の重量比率は50重量%で、このアノード触媒層11を純水に浸漬したときの、前述の式で示される面積膨潤率は、10%であった。
カソード用触媒粒子(Pt)を担持したカーボンブラックに、プロトン伝導性樹脂としてパーフルオロカーボンスルホン酸溶液と、分散媒として水およびメトキシプロパノールを添加し、カソード用触媒粒子を担持したカーボンブラックを分散させてペーストを調製した。上記のようにして得られたペーストをカソードガス拡散層14としての多孔質カーボンペーパに塗布することにより、厚さが100μmのカソード触媒層13を形成した。
このカソード触媒層13における、プロトン伝導性樹脂の重量比率は10重量%で、このカソード触媒層13を純水に浸漬したときの面積膨潤率は1%であった。
このように形成したアノード触媒層11およびカソード触媒層13と、電解質膜15とを、アノード側、カソード側ともに平面形状であるプレス用の金型を用いて、平面形状の金型を用いること以外は第1実施例に係る燃料電池と同様にホットプレスを行ない、膜電極接合体10を形成した。
この膜電極接合体10は、ホットプレスを行なった直後は平面形状であるが、膜電極接合体10を純水に浸漬すると、図4に示すように方向D1と方向D2とに反りを生じた。すなわち、図4に示すように、膜電極接合体10は、その平面内において短辺方向と長辺方向とに略平行な方向であって、膜電極接合体10の中央部がアノード側に凸となる方向D1、D2に反った形状である。
図4に示す中央部のたわみ量は3mm、周辺部のたわみ量は2mmであった。このように反りを生じる原因は、上記したアノード触媒層11とカソード触媒層13の面積膨潤率の違いにより、アノード触媒層11がより大きく膨潤したことによると考えられる。
燃料電池が発電している状態では、膜電極接合体10のカソード触媒層13における発電反応で水を生じ、その水が、電解質膜15およびアノード触媒層11に拡散して、膜電極接合体10の全体が水を含有した状態になると考えられる。そのため、上記したような膜電極接合体10を純水に浸漬した状態は、膜電極接合体10において発電反応を生じている状態を模擬していると考えることができる。
このようにして形成した膜電極接合体10を、第1実施例に係る燃料電池と同様にして組み立て、燃料電池を作成した。この第2実施例に係る燃料電池の出力密度の値は、第1実施例に係る燃料電池の出力密度の値に対して105%であった。
また、燃料電池が発電を行なっているときの交流インピーダンスの値を測定した結果、第2実施例に係る燃料電池の交流インピーダンスの値は、第1実施例に係る燃料電池の交流インピーダンスの値に対して90%であった。
(比較例)
本発明の比較例に係る燃料電池について以下に説明する。本比較例に係る燃料電池は、膜電極接合体10を形成する過程でホットプレスを行なう際に用いるプレス用の金型が、アノード側、カソード側ともに平面である。この点以外は、第1実施例に係る燃料電池と同様である。このようにして得られた膜電極接合体10は、ホットプレスした直後、および純水に浸漬した状態ともに、平面形状であった。
本発明の比較例に係る燃料電池について以下に説明する。本比較例に係る燃料電池は、膜電極接合体10を形成する過程でホットプレスを行なう際に用いるプレス用の金型が、アノード側、カソード側ともに平面である。この点以外は、第1実施例に係る燃料電池と同様である。このようにして得られた膜電極接合体10は、ホットプレスした直後、および純水に浸漬した状態ともに、平面形状であった。
この比較例に係る燃料電池の出力密度の値は、第1実施例に係る燃料電池の出力密度の値に対して90%であった。
また、燃料電池が発電を行なっているときの交流インピーダンスの値を測定した結果、本比較例に係る燃料電池の交流インピーダンスの値は、第1実施例に係る燃料電池の交流インピーダンスの値に対して110%であった。
第1実施例、第2実施例、および比較例において測定された交流インピーダンスは、膜電極接合体10とアノード導電層13との接触抵抗、および、膜電極接合体10とカソード導電層17との接触抵抗のほか、アノード導電層13およびカソード導電層17自体の電気抵抗、アノード導電層13と交流インピーダンス測定器の端子との間の接触抵抗、カソード導電層17と交流インピーダンス測定器の端子との間の接触抵抗、および、膜電極接合体10内の電解質膜のイオン導電抵抗をも含む値である。
但し、燃料電池の大きさや、アノード導電層16およびカソード導電層17の材質や厚さ、大きさ、また電解質膜15の材質、厚さ、大きさ等と、上記した発電条件が同じであれば、膜電極接合体10とアノード導電層16との間、および、膜電極接合体10とカソード導電層17との間の接触抵抗以外の成分は同じ値になると考えられる。
そのため、ここで測定される交流インピーダンスの値の大小は、即ち、膜電極接合体10とアノード導電層16との間、および、膜電極接合体10とカソード導電層17との間の接触抵抗の大小を示すものであると考えられる。
図5に示すように、上記の結果から、第1実施例および第2実施例に係る燃料電池では、比較例に係る燃料電池より高い出力を得ることができる。また、第1実施例および第2実施例に係る燃料電池では、発電を行っているときの交流インピーダンスの値が、比較例に係る燃料電池の交流インピーダンスと比べて低くなっている。すなわち、第1実施例および第2実施例に係る燃料電池では、膜電極接合体10とアノード導電層11との間、および、膜電極接合体10とカソード導電層13との間の接触を良好に保つことができている。
すなわち、本実施形態に係る燃料電池によれば、膜電極接合体10とアノード導電層11との間、および膜電極接合体10とカソード導電層13との間の接触を良好に保つとともに、高い出力を得られる燃料電池を提供することができる。
なお、この発明は、上記実施形態そのままに限定されるものではなく、実施段階ではその要旨を逸脱しない範囲で構成要素を変形して具体化できる。例えば、上記の実施形態では膜電極接合体10はアノード側に凸となる反り形状であったが、膜電極接合体10はカソード側に凸となる反り形状であっても良い。その場合であっても、上記の実施形態に係る燃料電池と同様の効果を得ることができる。
また、上記実施形態に開示されている複数の構成要素の適宜な組み合せにより種々の発明を形成できる。例えば、実施形態に示される全構成要素から幾つかの構成要素を削除してもよい。更に、異なる実施形態に亘る構成要素を適宜組み合せてもよい。
本発明によれば、膜電極接合体と導電層との接触を良好に保つとともに、高い出力を得られる燃料電池を提供することができる。
Claims (6)
- アノードと、カソードと、前記アノードと前記カソードとに挟持された電解質膜とからなる膜電極接合体と、
前記アノードに接するアノード導電層と、
前記カソードに接するカソード導電層と、
前記膜電極接合体の前記アノード側に配置され、前記アノードに燃料を供給するための燃料供給機構と、を備えた燃料電池であって、
前記膜電極接合体は、単体の状態ではアノード側に凸の形状を有する燃料電池。 - 前記アノードの膨潤率は前記カソードの膨潤率よりも大きい請求項1記載の燃料電池。
- 前記アノードの熱膨張率は前記カソードの熱膨張率よりも大きい請求項1記載の燃料電池。
- アノードを形成する工程と、
カソードを形成する工程と、
電解質膜を形成する工程と、
前記アノードと、前記カソードと、前記電解質膜のうち少なくとも2つ以上を接合して膜電極接合体を形成する接合工程と、
前記膜電極接合体と、前記アノードに接するアノード導電層と、前記カソードに接するカソード導電層と、前記膜電極接合体の前記アノード側に配置され、前記アノードに燃料を供給するための燃料供給機構と、を備えた燃料電池に組み込む組み込み工程と、
を少なくとも備え、
前記接合工程は、前記アノード側に凸の形状とするプレス工程を備えている燃料電池の製造方法。 - アノードと、カソードと、前記アノードと前記カソードとに挟持された電解質膜とからなる膜電極接合体と、
