Definitions
- the invention relates to an ink cartridge, in particular for an ink jet printer, having an ink reservoir which limits a free ink volume in a first chamber and a capillary volume in a second chamber, wherein the two chambers are fluidly connected to each other, and wherein the capillary volume limiting chamber is associated with an ink outlet ,
- Such so-called dual-chamber ink cartridges are well known, with one chamber primarily containing liquid ink and the other having an ink storage element defining a capillary volume, e.g. made of sponge or fiber material is filled. It is important, a controlled emptying of the two chambers in use of the ink cartridge, for. to ensure in an inkjet printer. Conventionally, the removal amount from both chambers is about the same. At the beginning, about 1/4 of the amount of ink taken is taken from the capillary volume. Then, the removal of about 1/2 of the total amount from the ink chamber or from the free ink volume limiting chamber takes place. Lastly, another 1/4 of the total amount is taken from the capillary volume.
- the ventilation and thus pressure compensation takes place through the capillary volume. If the capillary volume is emptied approximately halfway, an opening for aeration of the chamber bounding the free ink volume is released by the sunken filling level. In this way, then this chamber can be vented through the storage element or the capillary volume.
- the disadvantage is that two different storage materials for the capillary volume are required, namely a first large-pore upper storage material which is first discharged, and a second lower-volume storage material near the ink outlet with smaller pores. Only by this constellation ventilation of the two chambers of the ink cartridge is reliably possible.
- the two chambers are fluidly connected, via a near-ground passage in an intermediate wall, through which the two chambers are separated from each other within the ink cartridge.
- the present invention has for its object to provide an ink cartridge in which one manages with a single storage material for defining the capillary volume, i. with a storage material of uniform pore size. Furthermore, the pressure equalization should be facilitated by the fact that it does not have to be controlled by the capillary volume.
- the free-ink chamber is ventilated, wherein additionally a separate ventilation of the capillary volume or of the chamber delimiting the capillary volume is provided.
- the ventilation of the free ink volume limiting chamber is carried out according to the invention by an outgoing from the top wall of the cartridge immersion tube, which has one or more very small, preferably slot-shaped openings at the immersed distal end. Due to the size of these openings can be the
- a slot-shaped opening has the further advantage compared to a hole-shaped opening that it is much less sensitive to dirt particles and accordingly more efficient with respect to the air flow rate.
- the bubble generator according to the invention in the form of a dip tube ensures that the ventilation and consequently the emptying of the two chambers is controlled by the design of the bubble generator and not by the capillary volume or the capillary volume defining material.
- the capillary volume is formed by a uniform material of constant pore size.
- the solution according to the invention is characterized by a simpler and, accordingly, more cost-effective and, with regard to the emptying of the ink cartridge, a particularly functionally reliable construction.
- dip tube defining the bubble generator extends close to the bottom wall of the ink cartridge, at least to about the height of the fluid communication between the two chambers.
- the ventilation openings formed there are arranged one inside the other, so that an inner opening and an annular opening surrounding this outer opening is formed.
- the latter communicates with the chamber delimiting the capillary volume via at least one air channel formed in the cover wall, while the inner central opening communicates with the bubble generator or the dip tube defining it via a further air channel formed in the cover wall.
- Fig. 1 is an inventively designed ink cartridge in perspective
- the front side wall includes a cutout
- Fig. 2 is a view corresponding to Figure 1, only obliquely from below.
- FIG. 3 the detail III in FIG. 2 on an enlarged scale
- FIG. 4 shows the ink cartridge according to FIG. 1 or FIG. 2 before use in perspective view
- FIG. 5 the ink cartridge of FIG. 4 in longitudinal section.
- the ink cartridge shown in Figures 1, 2 and 4, 5 is designated by the reference numeral 10. It comprises four side walls, namely two opposite flat side walls 11 and two opposite end walls 12, and a top wall 13 and bottom wall 14.
- two chambers are formed, lent a first chamber 17, which limits a so-called free ink volume 16, and a second chamber 18 which defines a so-called capillary volume 15.
- This capillary volume 15 is defined by an ink storage element in the form of an open-pore sponge or fiber material.
- This memory element or the capillary volume 15 is associated with an ink outlet 21 on the bottom side.
- the two chambers are separated within the cartridge by a partition 19 from each other.
- the partition 19 has a fluid passage 20 between the two chambers 17 and 18.
- the cover wall 13 is formed as a separate component and comprises two ventilation openings 23, 24, which are arranged one inside the other.
- An inner ventilation opening 23 is surrounded annularly by an outer ventilation opening 24.
- the inner ventilation opening is in fluid communication via an air duct 25 formed in the cover wall 13 with the first chamber 17 which bounds the free ink volume 16, while the outer ventilation opening 24 is connected to the second chamber via a separate air duct 26 likewise formed in the cover wall 13 Chamber 18, which limits the capillary volume 15, is in communication.
- This channel opens into the second chamber 18 via an opening 27 on the underside of the cover wall 13.
- the first air channel 25 opens through an opening 28 on the underside of the top wall 13 in the first chamber 17, not directly, but via a formed as a bubble generator dip tube 29. So this extends from the bottom of the top wall 13 down into the the free ink volume 16 limiting first chamber 17 into it.
- a formed as a bubble generator dip tube 29 At the distal end of the dip tube 29 at least one opening 30 is formed for the introduction of air bubbles in the free ink.
- this opening in the illustrated embodiment comprises two relative to the tube longitudinal axis diametrically opposed slot openings, of which in the figures 2 and 3 each only one can be seen.
- the size of these slit openings 30 at the distal end of the dip tube 29 is dimensioned such that when using the ink cartridge, the ink only after about 1/4 of the capillary volume has been consumed through this opening 30 through air sucking fine bubbles into the free ink volume into it ,
- the bubble generator thus formed defines a capillary pressure which is preferably less than the capillary pressure at the ink outlet 21 but greater than the capillary pressure at the capillary volume 15. It should also be noted that capillary pressure at the ink outlet is provided by a wick disposed within the ink outlet Foam or fibrous material is defined. This wick has a higher density and thus smaller pore size than the storage material which defines the capillary volume 15.
- the slot-shaped openings 30 are set at the distal end of the dip tube 29 so that the capillary pressure of the bubble generator to a maximum of about 150%, in particular between about 50% and 150% greater than the capillary pressure with filled capillary 15.
- the two ventilation openings 23, 24 on the one hand and the ink outlet 21 on the other hand is still a common remove film 22 assigned. Before using the cartridge 10, this remove film is peeled off. Due to the above-described design of the two ventilation openings 23, 24 is always ensured that first the capillary volume limiting chamber 18, and only then the free ink volume limiting chamber 17 are vented. In this way it is prevented that unintentionally squirts ink out of the associated with the first chamber 17 ventilation opening 23 during pressure compensation.
- the two aforementioned air channels 25, 26 are formed on the top of the top wall 13, in particular milled. They are closed by a cover sheet 31.
- Measures for fixing the ink cartridge 10 within a receptacle of the inkjet printer are also formed on the side wall opposite the end wall 12 over which the remove film 22 extends. These are per se known measures that need not be described in detail here.
