Abstract

A surface-coated cutting tool that is provided with a coating capable of reducing of crater abrasion and imparting of high abrasion resistance. The surface-coated cutting tool comprises a base material and, superimposed thereon, a coating, wherein the coating contains one or more layers, at least one of which is a titanium compound layer containing a first compound expressed by the chemical formula Ti1-XMXZY. In the formula, X and Y are atomic ratios satisfying the relationships 0<X≤0.3 and 0.1≤Y≤2. Z is at least one element selected from the group consisting of boron, oxygen, carbon and nitrogen. M is V, Cr, Nb, Mo, Hf, Ta or W.
