Definitions

  • the invention relates to a bit magazine for storing screw bits, comprising a magazine body that is provided with at least two bit places, wherein each bit place is suitable for removably holding an elongate screw bit, which at one end is provided with a screw head and at the other end is provided with a drive piece that can be coupled with a bit holder of a screw tool, wherein the bit holder at one end is provided with a blind bit opening into which the drive piece of a bit fits exactly and which near the bottom of the bit opening is equipped with a holding means such as a magnet for keeping the screw bit in an operational position.
  • Screw systems with exchangeable bits and a bit holder as described above are in general use, often in combination with electrically driven screw drivers, that may or may not be cordless.
  • electrically driven screw drivers that may or may not be cordless.
  • these bits are often carried loose in the trouser pockets of carpenters or maintenance mechanics. When exchanging, this means an awkward and time-consuming search for the correct bit.
  • WO 02/085579 A a screw driver is disclosed, comprising an automatic bit changer.
  • a bit magazine rotatable about a core, which is provided with an opening.
  • a plunger provided with a magnetic point is movable through the core and through the bit magazine. With the aid of a leaver mechanism a bit can be moved in front of the plunger which then moves the bit through the opening towards the front of the screw driver.
  • This system is, however, particularly complicated and comprises a large number of inter- moveable components. The system is susceptible to blockage ow- ing to, for example, dirty bits and cannot be used with other screw drivers or screw machines . From the American patent application OS 2004/0139831 an exchangeable revolver for tool bits is known.
  • a housing contains a long tube, projecting at one end from the housing. During operation, that end holds a tool bit.
  • the housing comprises a rotatable bit magazine, so that during rotation of the magazine a bit is moved in front of the other end of the tube. With the aid of a plunger the bit is then pushed through the tube to its operational position.
  • the eccentrically positioned bit magazine causes rotational imbalance so that the system is unsuitable for screw tools.
  • This system is similarly susceptible to blockage, for example, caused by dirty bits and cannot be used with other screw drivers or screw tools.
  • bit magazines with bits on the market that can be used with existing screw drivers and screw tools .
  • a bit in the bit holder of a screw driver for example, a screw tool with an existing bit magazine
  • a bit is manually removed from the bit holder of the screw tool.
  • the screw tool has to be put down, for example, on a table or on the floor.
  • the hand that is now free now has to pick up the bit magazine into which the bit removed from the bit holder is placed. Then a new bit is selected from the bit magazine.
  • bit magazine then has to be put down and the screw tool has to be picked up, after which the newly selected bit can be placed into the bit holder of the screw tool .
  • existing bit magazines have several drawbacks. Firstly, a considerable number of actions are required for exchanging a bit. In addition, such an exchange means that there must be an opportunity for putting the screw tool down somewhere. This is not the case in all work situations. Especially on a building site or in conditions in which maintenance mechanics work will it be difficult to find a suitable place for temporarily depositing the screw tool.
  • bit magazine of the kind mentioned in the preamble that allows the bits to be conveniently removed from and placed into the bit holder and also to be replaced from the bit holder into the bit magazine in a simple operation.
  • the magazine body has a central axis and is provided with a central through-opening through which a bit holder can pass, with the bit places being placed equidistant to the axis, with the distance between two adjacent bit places also being the same and wherein the bit magazine is provided with a attaching means for removably fastening the magazine body to the bit holder in such a way that the central axis of the bit magazine substantially coincides with the central axis of the bit holder.
  • the bit magazine is now removably attached to the bit holder. When in operation, the bit magazine will now revolve with the bit holder.
  • the attaching means is embodied as a sleeve of which the inside is embodied step-like so as to form a radial check, and can be slid onto the bit holder to allow the check to abut against a radial shoulder of the bit holder.
  • bit magazine is easy to fasten to and remove from practically each bit holder on the market, which makes the bit magazine according to the invention especially universally employable .
  • the bit magazine may now, for example, be slid onto a bit holder and together with the bit holder into a screw driver or screw tool.
  • the bit magazine can now be locked between the screw tool and the shoulder of the bit holder.
  • the bit magazine is attached to the bit holder without having to fix it by locking it between the screw tool and the shoulder of the bit holder.
  • the inside of the sleeve is formed such that the sleeve can not rotate in relation to the bit holder.
  • the attaching means is embodied as a sleeve of which the inside is tightly fastened to the bit holder.
  • the magazine body has a central axis and is provided with a central through-opening through which a bit holder can pass and wherein the bit magazine is provided with a attaching means for fastening the magazine body to a screw tool using a bit holder such that the central axis of the bit magazine substantially coincides with a central axis of the bit holder.
  • the magazine body can now, for example, be attached to the head of a screw tool and will during use not rotate with the bit holder.
  • the attaching means is at the outside provided with a surface that fits exactly into the central through-opening of the magazine body, and the attaching means is further provided with a first detent for checking the magazine body. This greatly facilitates loosening and reattaching the magazine body to the attaching means, which is realised by sliding the maga- zine body off and on.
  • De invention further comprises a bit to be used with a bit magazine according to claim 13, wherein the bit is provided with a radial groove for a detent with an O-ring. This increases the hold of the O-ring on the bit, which facilitates the release of the bit from the bit holder.

  • Fig. 4 shows a traditional bit holder 7 as available on the market.
  • Bit holder 7 comprises a hexagonal portion 11 for fitting into a screwdriver or screw tool, which continues into a cylindrical portion 10. The transition from hexagonal portion 11 to cylindrical portion 10 is formed by a shoulder
  • the cylindrical portion 10 is provided with a blind bit opening 8, which is also hexagonal, and, into which the drive piece 6 of bit 2 fits exactly.
  • the holding means 9 is provided, embodied as magnet for holding a bit 2 in the bit holder 7.
  • Fig. 2 further shows that the drive piece 6 of the bit 2 is placed into bit place 3 with play, such that the cylindrical portion 10 of the bit holder 7 can be slid over the drive piece 6, whereby drive piece 6 of bit 2 comes to rest in the bit opening 3 of the bit holder 7.
  • Magazine body 1, and in particular its bit place 3, are dimensioned such that the bit holder 7 can be slid over the drive piece 6 of the bit 2 far enough for the end of drive piece 6 to contact the bottom 9 of the bit opening 8.
  • Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 further show an O-ring 13 around the magazine body 1. At the height of each bit place 3 of magazine body 1 the O-ring 13 is positioned in an open groove, such that the inner side of the O-ring 13 projects slightly into the space of bit place 3. When the bit 2 is posi- tioned in the bit place 3, the 0-ring 13 exerts a slight pressure on bit 2 whereby bit 2 is held in bit place 3 by the O- ring 13.
  • the blind bit opening 8 of the bit holder 7 in the screw tool is now slid over the drive piece 6 of a selected bit 2 that is held in a bit place 3 of the magazine body 1, until the end of the drive piece 6 contacts the bottom of the blind bit opening 8.
  • Magnet 9 now exerts an attracting force on bit 2.
  • the O-ring 13 and the opening in front of the O-ring in bit place 3 are dimensioned such that the retaining (fric- tional) force of the O-ring 13 exerted on bit 2 is smaller than the attracting force of magnet 9 on the bit 2.
  • the screw tool may now be retracted and is ready for use with the selected bit 2.
  • the screw head 5 of the bit is inserted into a free bit place 3 of the magazine body 1, using the screw tool.
  • the bit 2 is now held in the bit place 3 by the O-ring 13 and on the other hand, is held in the bit holder 7 by the magnetic force of the magnet 9.
  • the force of the O-ring 13 on the bit 2 can be increased such that it exceeds the magnetic force on the bit 2, allowing the screw tool to be retracted and leaving the bit 2 behind in the bit place 3 of the magazine body 1. This facilitates the exchange of a bit without in the interim having to put the screw tool or the bit magazine down.
  • a particular embodiment of a bit 2 according to the invention is shown.
  • the bit 2 differs from regular bits and, in accordance with the invention, is provided with a radial groove 28.
  • the O- ring 13 falls into this groove 28. In this way little extra pressure needs to be exerted on O-ring 13 to release bit 2 with groove 28 from the magnetic force of magnet 9 in the bit holder 7.
  • Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 further show that at each bit place 3, at the height of the position of the screw head 5 of a bit 2, the magazine body 1 is provided with a sight opening 14. This makes it possible to see from the outside which type of bit 2 is positioned in the respective bit place 3.
