Abstract

 本発明の目的は、斜め方向から観察したときの視野角、黒表示の再現性や鮮明性等の視認性、正面コントラストが改善されたIPSモード型液晶表示装置を提供することにある。 本発明の目的は、第1偏光子と、第1基板と、液晶層と、第2基板とがこの順に配置され、第1偏光子と第1基板の間に第1位相差層と第2位相差層が配置されてなるIPSモード型液晶表示装置であって、第1位相差層が負の二軸性であり、第2位相差層のレターデーションRo、Rthが0≦Ro≦50nm、且つ50≦Rth≦300nmであり、第1偏光子の吸収軸と黒表示時の液晶層の遅相軸方向が直交しており、第1位相差層がより第1偏光子側に近い場合は、第1位相差層の面内の遅相軸と第1偏光子の吸収軸が平行であり、第2位相差層がより第1偏光子側に近い場合は、第1位相差層の面内の遅相軸と第1偏光子の吸収軸が直交であることを特徴とする液晶表示装置によって達成された。
