Abstract

 複数の画素電極を有するアクティブマトリクス基板(20)と、共通電極(33)を有する対向基板(30)と、両基板の間に設けられる液晶層(40)とを備え、複数の画素(10)により構成されるCPA方式の液晶表示装置であって、画素電極(23)と共通電極(33)とは互いに一定の間隔をあけて配置され、各画素(10)は、反射モードの表示を行う反射表示領域(R)と、透過モードの表示を行う透過表示領域(T)とを有し、反射表示領域(R)には、反射表示領域(R)における液晶層(40)の一部の厚さ(d2)を透過表示領域(T)における液晶層(40)の厚さ(d1)よりも小さくするとともに、液晶層(40)の液晶分子の配向方向を制御する配向制御部(4)が設けられている。これにより、透過表示領域および反射表示領域を備えた、CPA方式の液晶表示装置において、透過モードおよび反射モードにおける表示品位の劣化を防ぐとともに、両モードにおける応答速度を略均一化する。
