Abstract

 本発明は、各画素を4色以上の副画素で構成する表示パネルを用いるという前提下、色再現性と輝度とのバランスがとれた表示装置を提供することを目的とする。  外光検出部(500)は、外光の強度に応じた電流Iaを出力する。切替制御回路(600)は、電流(Ia)の大きさに基づいて、表示モードを選択するための表示モード選択信号(S)を出力する。出力選択回路120は、第1の表示モード(暗い時)であればRGB画像信号を入力選択回路(160)に与え、第2の表示モード(明るい時)であればRGB画像信号を階調値変換部(140)に与える。第1の表示モードの際には、黒信号生成回路(130)で生成されたWの画像信号が階調信号(DV)として用いられる。第2の表示モードの際には、階調値変換部(140)で階調値決定用テーブル(150)を参照することによって生成されたWの画像信号が階調信号(DV)として用いられる。
