Abstract

 本発明の多値光強度変調器は、入力光をn分岐(nは2以上の整数)してn本の分岐導波路にそれぞれ送る。各分岐導波路上にはMZI型光変調部がそれぞれ設けられており、各MZI型光変調部は、0.5:0.5とは異なる分岐比で入力光を二分岐し、2値の電気信号によりオン/オフ駆動されることで消光比の劣化した2値の光信号をそれぞれ出力する。そして、各MZI型光変調部からの出力光を合波することにより、零レベルを含まない2n値に光強度変調された光信号を出力する。これにより、2値の電気信号を用いた実用的な構成によって、零レベルを含まない4値以上の光強度変調を実現することが可能になる。
