Abstract

 高輝度化に対応し、コントラスト比のばらつきを抑えつつ高コントラスト比が可能で、高精細化、長寿命化を図ることができる光学補償板、その光学補償板を用いた液晶表示装置、投射型液晶表示装置、並びに、表示装置の製造方法および調整方法を提供する。液晶表示装置は、照射された光束を誘電率異方性が負である液晶分子を垂直配向させ、基板の主面に垂直な方向にプレチルトを有する液晶層により光変調する液晶デバイスと、液晶デバイスの入射側に配置された第1の偏光板と、液晶素子の出射側に配置された第2の偏光板と、第1の偏光板の出射側と第2の偏光板の入射側との間の光路に配置された光学補償板と、を有する。光学補償板は、少なくとも2つの補償層を有し、補償層が、互いに、位相差値、および、面内の光学軸方向が異なるようにして貼り合わされている。
