- the housing may be recessed into the roof of the motor vehicle, the housing being movable between a lowered, recessed position when not required and an extended, raised position when needed.
- the housing may be fitted to a roof of a carport in which the vehicle may be parked.
- Figure 1 shows a top view of a vehicle cover according to a first example embodiment, a vehicle cover sheet of the vehicle cover being shown in an expanded configuration ready for use;
- Figure 2 shows a side view of a vehicle fitted with the vehicle cover shown in Figure 1;
- Figure 3 shows a side view of a vehicle fitted with the vehicle cover according to a further version of the first embodiment.
- Figure 4 shows a top view of a vehicle cover according to a second example embodiment
- Figure 5 shows a top view of a vehicle cover according to a third example embodiment.
- a vehicle cover 10 comprising a housing 12 to accommodate a vehicle cover sheet 14, the vehicle cover sheet comprising a plurality of reinforcing elements 40, typically in the form of spring wires.
- the vehicle cover 10 further comprises a plurality of rollers 16, 18, 20 and 22 fitted within the housing 12.
- the rollers 16, 18, 20 and 22 define a releasing arrangement fitted to the housing 12 and connected to the plurality of reinforcing elements 40 so as to allow the reinforcing elements 40, and thus the vehicle cover sheet 14, to be released from the housing 12 when in use, and to then allow the reinforcing elements 40 to be retracted back into the housing 12 when not in use.
- Each roller 16, 18, 20 and 22 may be connected to a portion of the vehicle sheet 14.
- Each roller 16, 18, 20 and 22 may also be rotatable so that upon rotation in the first direction, the portion of the vehicle cover sheet 14 attached to the relevant roller 16, 18, 20 and 22 unwinds for use, and upon rotation in a second direction, the portion of the vehicle cover sheet 14 attached to the relevant roller 16, 18, 20 and 22 winds up to enable it to be stored away.
- rollers there are 4 rollers, 16, 18, 20 and 22 with their associated cover sheet portions 24, 26, 28 and 30 being arranged to cover the front, left side, rear and right side of the vehicle's body.
- An underlying vehicle is indicated by broken outline 31 , with the vehicle roof top indicated by 31 A.
- the vehicle cover sheet 14 may either be a unitary sheet, as shown in Figure 1 , or may comprise 4 separate portions each connected to a respective roller 16, 18, 20 and 22.
- the ends of the 4 vehicle cover sheet portions 24, 26, 28 and 30 are provided with hooks 32, 34, 36 and 38 to enable them to be secured under the bottom sides of the vehicle.
- suckers may be used to secure the ends of the cover sheet portions 24, 26, 28 and 30 to the vehicle.
- the spring wires 40 of the vehicle cover sheet 14 may be used to bias the vehicle cover sheet 14 into an expanded configuration after it has been unwound from the housing 12.
- each roller 16, 18, 20 and 22 is fitted to a motor (not shown) to control the winding and unwinding of the rollers 16, 18, 20 and 22.
- the motor may be remotely controlled by the user.
- the housing 12 may include a switch 42 to enable control of the motor.
- the motor may be accommodated either within the housing 12 or within another part of the motor vehicle (and connected accordingly to the rollers 16, 18, 20 and 22), such as the boot or trunk of the motor vehicle.
- the housing 12 of the vehicle cover 10 may be releasably fitted to the roof of the motor vehicle 31.
- the housing 12 of the vehicle cover 10 may be integrally formed with the roof of the motor vehicle 31.
- Figure 2 shows both configurations. In these two embodiments, a lid 42 may be 5 provided and extending from an uppermost portion of the housing 12 so as to cover the housing 12 when not in use.
- the housing 12 may be recessed into the roof 31A of the motor vehicle 31 , the housing 12 I O being movable between a lowered, recessed position (indicated by dotted outline 44) when not required and an extended, raised position (indicated by solid outline 46) when needed.
- the housing 12 may be fitted to a roof of a carport 15 in which the vehicle may be parked.
- Use may be made of solar power and/or battery and/or a conventional AC power supply to power the motor, if provided.
