Description

The invention relates to a heat exchanger comprising a multiplicity of flat tubes each having two main faces which extend substantially in planes over most of the length of the tube, the tubes being mutually aligned in a longitudinal direction perpendicular to said planes and an end region of each of them being twisted to engage a slot formed through the substantially tubular wall of a manifold, which slot is not parallel to said planes.
Such a heat exchanger is used in particular in the automotive industry, and is described in particular in EP 0 845 647 A. In this document, the end regions of the tubes may engage, either in individual slots, either in a longitudinal slot common to several tubes. In one example, individual slots are oriented obliquely and aligned in a pitch less than their length. The tubes are thus also aligned at the same pitch, less than the length of their cross section. In another example, individual slots are oriented in the longitudinal direction and are separated from each other by wall portions of the box. The pitch of the slots and tubes is therefore greater than the length of the slots and the cross section of the tubes. In another example, the end regions of the tubes are contiguously arranged in a common slot, at a pitch equal to the length of the cross section of the tubes.
Thus, in the known exchanger, if it is desired to choose the alignment pitch of the tubes regardless of the length of their cross section, it is necessary to insert their end regions into individual slots, which requires machining in the collector box as many slots as there are tubes.
The object of the invention is to overcome this constraint, thus enabling a less expensive manufacture of the heat exchanger.
The invention aims in particular at a heat exchanger of the kind defined in the introduction, in which the end regions engage in a longitudinal slot common to several tubes, and provides means for establishing a tube alignment pitch different from the length of their cross section over said major part of their length.
The "alignment pitch of the tubes" corresponds to the distance between two opposite edges of contiguous tubes at the ends of said tubes inserted / fixed in a manifold.

The heat exchangers shown in the drawings are intended more particularly, though not exclusively, for use in the automotive industry as gas cooler in which circulates a refrigerant working at high pressures such as CO 2 .
The substantially tubular wall 1 shown in FIG. 1, traversed by a longitudinal slot 2, is advantageously formed by rolling a sheet, for example made of aluminum alloy, so as to bring opposite two opposite edges 3 and 4 for delimiting slot 2. The term "substantially tubular" refers here to a tubular configuration, excluding the continuous slot that creates an opening in the cross section of the wall, while the cross section of a tubular wall in the strict sense is closed.
The flat tube 5 of rectangular cross-section also shown in FIG. 1 has two main faces which, over most of the length of the tube, extend substantially in parallel planes whose mutual distance, which defines the thickness of the tube , is substantially equal to the width of the slot 2. In known manner, the main walls of the tube are interconnected by partitions 6 defining longitudinal channels 7 for the circulation of a fluid, including COa. FIG. 1 also shows that an end region 9 of the tube 5 is twisted by 90 ° about the median longitudinal axis 8 of the tube so that its cross section is oriented perpendicularly to the aforementioned planes of the faces main. Thus, when the end region 9 of the tube is inserted in the slot 2, said planes are perpendicular to the longitudinal axis 10 of the manifold, that is to say perpendicular to the direction of alignment of the tubes, to allow conventionally the circulation of a fluid such as air to be cooled between the tubes, perpendicular to the axis 10. In a conventional manner also, the tubes 5 are alternately aligned with corrugated inserts 11, the ridges waving of each interlayer coming into contact alternately with the two tubes adjacent thereto. According to the invention, the end regions 9 of the tubes are arranged contiguously in the slot 2, the length of their cross section having been reduced by a necking operation performed before the insertion, so. that the pitch alignment of the tubes, which is equal to the length of the cross section of the regions 9, is less than the initial length of the cross section of the tubes, which remains over most of the length thereof. The result of the necking operation is shown in FIG. 2 when it is performed before twisting the tube. It can also be performed after this twist.
If, instead of a constriction, a flare is made to lengthen the cross-section of the end regions of the tubes, the result will be an alignment pitch of the tubes greater than their width.
The heat exchanger shown in FIGS. 6 to 8 differs from that described above in that the end regions 9 of the tubes 5 have retained their original cross section, an increase in the pitch of alignment of the tubes with respect to their width being obtained in that the regions 9 are spaced from each other, the portions of the continuous longitudinal slot of the wall 1 not occupied by the regions 9 being closed by respective rings 20 surrounding the wall 1.
The heat exchanger shown partially in FIGS. 9 and 10 comprises a tubular wall 1 similar in general shape to that of the preceding embodiments, having a longitudinal slot 2 in which the end regions 9 of similar tubes engage. to those of the heat exchanger of Figures 6 to 8. The regions 9 are here kept spaced from each other by the teeth 31 of a comb-shaped part 30 shown separately in Figure 14. To achieve the part 30 , one starts from a strip of sheet of a thickness equal to that of the tubes and to the width of the slot 2, in which one cutting from one of its longitudinal edges, rectangular notches 32 between which remain the teeth 31, as seen in Figure 13, the teeth 31 being interconnected by a shaft 33 extending along the other longitudinal edge of the strip. The part 30 is then folded along a longitudinal fold line λ extending between the shaft 33 on the one hand and the teeth 31 and the notches 32 on the other hand, to form an L-shaped profile, one of the branches of the L defining the teeth 31 and the other branch defining the shaft 33, as seen in Figure 14.
In the assembled exchanger, as shown in FIGS. 9 and 10, the shaft 33 extends laterally with respect to the slot 2 and rests on the outer surface of the tubular wall 1, while the teeth 31 penetrate the slot 2, together with the regions 9 of the tubes. Opposite the shaft 33 with respect to the slot 2, the tubular wall 1 has a rim 34 protruding radially outwards and extending along the regions 9. After assembly, the rim 34 is deformed at intervals. means of a tool to make it penetrate between the tubes and thus immobilize the piece 30 by crimping before the final connection of the assembly by brazing.
Des rebords 34 semblables à celui des figures 9 et 10, s ' étendant à l'opposé des hampes 33 par rapport aux fentes 2, servent au sertissage.FIGS. 11 and 12 partially show a cylindrical wall 41 of collecting box having a cross-section in the form of 8, this cylindrical wall thus forming two tubular walls having a common portion and each delimiting a fluid chamber 36. In each of the chambers 36 is associated with a slot 2 in which the regions 9 of identical tubes to those of the embodiment of Figures 9 and 10 and the teeth of a comb 30 identical to that of Figure 14. The two slots 2 s' extend in planes parallel to each other, the shafts 33 of the two combs being turned toward each other, their free edges resting on radial appendages 37 of the wall 35. Edges 34 similar to that of FIGS. 10 extending opposite the poles 33 relative to the slots 2, serve crimping.
The heat exchanger partially shown in FIGS. 15 and 16 again comprises a single manifold tubular wall 1 associated with a single row of tubes whose end regions 9 engage in a longitudinal slot 2 of the wall 1. The regions 9 are kept spaced apart from each other by the teeth 41 of a comb-shaped insert 40, shown separately in Figure 18. To produce the piece 40, one starts from a strip of sheet metal to the inside which rectangular openings 42, as shown in FIG. 17, are cut in order to obtain a ladder-shaped blank. This blank is then folded at 180 ° along a median longitudinal fold line λi to bring the two halves of each "bar" of the ladder in mutual superposition and thus form the teeth 41, and at 90 ° along two fold lines. longitudinals λ 2 each extending between one of the "uprights" 43 and "bars" of the ladder so as to bring the two uprights in the same plane perpendicular to the plane of the teeth 41 and on either side of this one, to form the shaft.
In the assembled heat exchanger, the two flanges 43 of the shaft of the comb 40 penetrate into grooves 44 formed in the tubular wall 1. Each tooth 41 being formed by the superposition of two thicknesses of sheet, the thickness of the strip of starting sheet is equal to half the width of the slot 2 and the thickness of the tubes.
Conventionally, in the heat exchangers described, the seal between the inside of the header and the channels 7 on the one hand and the outside on the other hand can be ensured by melting a soldering material. covering all or part of the surfaces of the manifold, tubes and optionally the one or more inserts, brazing material which also serves to mechanically fasten these components. Modifications may be made to the embodiments described and shown without departing from the scope of the invention. Thus, instead of a continuous slot delimited by opposite edges of a rolled sheet, the substantially tubular wall may have a slot obtained by forming a closed tubular wall, which may extend over only a portion of the length of the tube. the manifold, or two or more slits extending respectively over different parts of the length of the box and each receiving the end regions of several tubes. Moreover, each of the rings 20 can be replaced by an insert only partially surrounding the wall 1.
