Definitions
- the invention relates to a folding rudder wheel for boats, which is formed by a fixed part and two other movable ones that articulate and fold on the fixed part when it is required to modify the size of the rudder wheel to pass from an extended configuration , coincident with the use position, to a collected configuration, coincident with the rest position, or vice versa.
- the folding rudder wheel is especially suitable for use in sailboats.
- Rudder control systems on boats require that the size of the wheel that controls the. Ship's rudder differs considerably from one vessel to another, and this depends on variables such as the desired precision in the turns, the force necessary to maneuver with the wheel or the distance of access to the wheel. :
- rudder wheels formed in a single piece that includes, usually in the same plane, a peripheral grip ring provided with reinforcement spokes that join in a central core.
- This type of rudder wheels lacks folding or decomposition means that allow to modify or reduce its size and, nevertheless, some allow its arrangement on deck so that they do not constitute an obstacle to the passage around it.
- US 5048444 describes a boat rudder wheel swivel mounted on a pivot conveniently arranged on a shaft or support foot;
- the pivot is formed by two portions that are aligned and held together by a rotating coupling having a direction of rotation substantially perpendicular to the pivot so that the wheel of the rudder can be rotated from an operating position to an angular position of rest in the May your presence not hinder the passage.
- JP 58030867 describes a steering wheel for motor vehicles constituted by a circular ring supported by three spokes and divided into three segments, each of which is attached to a respective radius. Each radius is connected to the rotating shaft by means of a rotating coupling that has an axis of rotation perpendicular to the shaft.
- a radius and the respective segment into the steering wheel and modify its volume, for example in order to facilitate entry and exit into a motor vehicle.
- This solution could be applied to nautical, although it would be of little use because only one ring of the segment could be folded at the time and, thus, the volume of the steering wheel would be reduced only on one side and the unfolded portion of the wheel would continue to hinder the movements on board.
- WO 03024785 describes a rudder wheel that It can be mounted on a rudder shaft and comprises a substantially circular body with an external peripheral edge for user grip and a central hub defining a rotation axis L, said body being formed by a plurality of circular portions that are movable relative to to others, to selectively move from an open operating configuration, where the circular portions are adjacent and contained in a main extension plane, to a closed final configuration, where said circular portions are at least partially superimposed in order to limit the volume in said main extension plane or vice versa.
- the passage from one configuration to another requires the separation and coaxial rotation of the circular and precise portions of a wheel hub of complex formation.
- the wheel finally formed is expensive.
- the object of this invention is the improvement of the rudder wheels of the type described, modifying the extended dimension of the wheels by folding the parts that compose it, so that greater space is available in the maneuvering area of the wheel of the helm and trying, in addition, that the folding is easy to execute by the user being cheap its cost of obtaining.
- This object is considered to be obtained by means of the folding rudder wheel for boats, which is formed by three parts designed in an appropriate way and conveniently related to each other so that they can be folded over each other so that the wheel results folded in a non-use position.
- the wheel is constructed divided into three parts intended to be articulated with each other, so that the central fraction receives the folding of the lateral fractions, for which it has been necessary to design the central fraction of the wheel with radii and portions of radius and each fraction or lateral portion of the wheel only with portions of radius that, in its diametral confrontation and further blocking, they will keep the rudder wheel extended, while, after unlocking and when both fractions are knocked down on the central fixed part, the rudder wheel will be folded.
- the folding tiller wheel proposed by the invention includes, usually in the same plane, a peripheral grip ring provided by the user provided with reinforcement spokes that are joined in a central core mounted so that it can rotate in the shaft that supports it, its main characteristic being that it is constituted by a fixed central part and at least two lateral portions that are substantially symmetrical, opposite and held together in an articulated manner to said fixed central part by respective articulations provided in at least two diametrically opposite spokes in the rudder wheel.
- said lateral portions of the wheel are knocked down and superimposed on the fixed central part when forced by the pilot of the ship when it attracts them towards itself, forcing them to rotate on the joints to fold them, one after the other, against the fixed central part of the wheel. when folding is required and in order to modify the size of the wheel, which thus goes from an extended configuration, in coincidence with the operating position of use, to the collected or closed configuration, coinciding with a non-use position.
- said fixed central part and said at least two movable side portions have radius portions that are respectively and longitudinally facing each other when the wheel of Rudder is deployed, leaving the position when folding the wheel begins.
- the invention proposes that said respective radius portions and longitudinally facing each other be held in said position by means of locking elements, at least as long as it is required to keep the wheel extended or deployed.
- the rotation of the lateral portions with respect to the central fixed part requires blocking elements that allow the movements leading to the folding of the helm wheel and its subsequent unfolding to configure a sturdy helm wheel when required use to govern the ship.
- These locking elements according to the invention are preferred, at least as far as certain spokes of the rudder wheel are concerned, constituted by a plurality of independent connecting bushings, for example, spring-assisted, nut or other spring-loaded cavities.
- the proximal ends of each pair of facing portions of spokes so that the continuity between them is achieved, creating with its rigidity the second spokes of the rudder wheel that will guarantee its extended configuration.
- the portions of facing radii are separated from each other.
- said fixed central part of the rudder wheel is provided to comprise opposite portions of peripheral ring connected to the central core by, for example, first wheel spokes and, in addition, to comprise portions of spokes that with their confrontation and subsequent blocking or articulation to the corresponding and reciprocal portions of spokes designed in both lateral portions of the wheel will procure the second and third spokes of the wheel that will keep it rigidly extended.
- the joints that join said diametrically opposite radius portions can be designed in a varied way.
- the articulation means could be integrated by holes with pins, screws threaded on the spokes, etc.
- a folding rudder wheel according to the invention includes, usually in a sensitive same plane, a peripheral ring provided with reinforcing spokes that are joined in a central core and is formed with a fixed central part with two opposite portions of peripheral ring connected by means of continuous spokes, or first wheel spokes, to the central core of the pivoting rudder wheel in the shaft or rudder mounting bracket, from which portions of radius of shorter length than a continuous wheel radius also emerge.
- Two lateral wheel portions each formed with a peripheral ring portion of sensitive equal length and whose interior radius portions are directed towards the core of the rudder wheel in correspondence with the radio portions of the fixed part to form second wheel radii, are joined to said fixed central part by means of respective joints arranged in diametrically opposite radii in the rudder wheel and provided in the for example, as connecting plates fixed with rivets to the respective ends of each facing radius portions, to allow their rotation and folding or unfolding the lateral portions on the fixed central part of the rudder wheel.
- Locking elements especially provided as locking sliding elements, nuts in the example, on the radius portions of the lateral wheel portions or in the fixed central part allow, with their threading, fixing or sliding with respect to the respective and facing portions radius of said central and lateral part, the formation and stiffening of the third wheel spokes and, thereby, the locking of the rudder wheel to keep it deployed or, reversing the maneuver, its unlocking to facilitate folding thereof.
- Figure 1 shows, by means of an isometric perspective, a simplified embodiment of the folding rudder wheel for boats, with the movable side portions extended in the same plane as the one occupied by the fixed central part and with the radio portions blocked by the elements lock
- Figure 2 shows an isoratric perspective of the folding rudder wheel for boats, in correspondence with Figure 1 although with the side wheel portions moved halfway, the moving parts forming a 90 ° angle with respect to the fixed central part , the spokes are unlocked and the lateral portions are attached to the fixed central part of the wheel by means of the articulation elements.
- Figure 3 shows, in correspondence with Figures 1 and 2, an isometric perspective of the fully folded rudder wheel for boats.
- the folding helm wheel is formed by a fixed central part (1) and by two lateral portions (2) and (3).
- Said fixed central part (1) is formed by two opposite portions of the peripheral ring (4, 5) joined by first continuous wheel spokes (6) with the central core
- Each of said lateral portions (2) and (3) is formed by a respective peripheral ring portion (10) and (11) from which they depart towards the central core (7) of the respective rudder wheel radius portions (12) and (13).
- the radius portions (8) and (9) of the fixed central part (1) are seen, in Figure 1, longitudinally facing and in mutual correspondence with the respective radius portions (12) or (13) of the lateral portions (2) and (3), defining, respectively, the second and third wheel spokes. It is also appreciated, with the help of the figures and especially in figure 1, that the third spokes of the rudder wheel, formed with portions of radius (8, 12), are attached to respective intermediate plates (14) and (15) by means of the contest of rivets (16), while the remaining radii formed with portions of radius (9, 13), are kept longitudinally facing each other bound by the bushings (17) that constitute the blocking elements.
- the blocking elements (17) are observed, in Figure 1, held on the opposite ends of each of the radius portions (9, 13) longitudinally facing each other, preventing the movable wheel side portions (2 and 3 ) rotate with respect to the intermediate plates (14, 15) and on the axes of rotation that constitute the rivets (16).
- the intermediate plates (14, 15) are of different lengths, the expected one associated with the movable lateral part (2) being longer, since when superimposing the central part (1) and the lateral part (3), it must be save a greater thickness than the other moving part (3); in addition, the arrangement of an elongated hole (18) favors the rotation.
- peripheral ring portions (4, 5, 10, 11) have appropriate coupling means (19, 20) at their ends.
