Abstract

Selon l'invention, un convertisseur catalytique destiné à un système d'échappement d'un moteur à combustion interne comprend un boîtier en métal sans soudure, fait en une seule pièce, qui possède des tubulures d'entrée de gaz et des tubulures de sortie de gaz, et une partie de tubulure intermédiaire, qui comporte plusieurs éléments catalytiques en cascade. La partie intermédiaire est connectée à l'orifice d'entrée par une partie de transition d'entrée, et à l'orifice de sortie par une partie de transition de sortie. Les orifices d'entrée de sortie, ainsi que les parties de transition d'entrée et de sortie, sont formés par l'écrasement des extrémités du tube utilisé pour former le boîtier. Les gaz d'échappement générés par le fonctionnement du moteur arrivent dans le convertisseur et passent à travers l'élément catalytique. Les substances nocives dans les gaz d'échappement, y compris CO, NOx et les hydrocarbures non brûlés entièrement sont convertis en substances moins nocives grâce à l'action de l'élément catalytique, qui est de préférence une structure céramique en nid d'abeilles friable, et qui possède une pluralité de passages internes recouverts d'une substance catalytiquement active. Un processus d'écrasement est utilisé pour former des extrémités en forme de tubulure du convertisseur. Les extrémités en forme de tubulure réduisent au minimum la génération de turbulences dans les gaz et permettent de raccorder le convertisseur au reste du système d'échappement au moyen de joints serrés, soudés ou fixés avec une bride. La construction du convertisseur en une seule pièce et sans soudure permet d'effectuer la fabrication économique et élimine le soudage des composants du boîtier qui ont tendance à tomber en panne lorsqu'ils sont soumis au gaz d'échappement corrosif pendant une période de temps prolongée.
