- FIG. 6C is a schematic view of the left side of the virtual plane of FIG. 6A.
- the slit 6 can be formed by an etching process generally used in a semiconductor process, and is described in Reference 2 or Reference 3.
- the propagation loss of the light beam incident on the waveguide has polarization dependence, which depends on the plane of polarization.
- polarization dependence is a problem to be solved particularly in an optical wavelength division multiplexing system in which the technology of the optical fiber system is advanced, and a reduction in the polarization dependence is required.
- FIG. 7 shows experimental results showing the polarization dependence of the attenuation when a conventional variable attenuator is used.
- the vertical axis represents the amount of light attenuation
- the horizontal axis represents the mirror position (arbitrary unit)
- the solid line and broken line curves represent the attenuation corresponding to the mirror position (equivalent to shutter 5 above).
- the attenuation obtained differs between TE and TM.
- a difference of about 5 dB occurs between TE and TM at the position of the mirror at point a indicated by the arrow.
- the mirror position K of FI G. 7 is the position where the shirt 5 indicated by FI Gs. 6 A-6B is located slightly above the light beam propagating through the slit 6 from the core 2. In a relationship.
- FI G. 8 is a diagram showing a typical example of the energy intensity distribution of the light beam centered on the core of the optical waveguide.
- the horizontal axis is the distance from the core center (/ im), and the vertical axis is the normalized energy intensity. Represents.
- the relative refractive index difference ⁇ 0.3%
- the width and height of the core are each 3 x m.
- the energy distribution of the light beam is almost normal, and the tail of the light beam extends to the outside of the core.
- the shape of the distribution is symmetrical up and down and left and right as shown in FIG. 8 as a first-order approximation.
- the quartz system forming the optical waveguides 1 and 2 has a relative refractive index of 1 • 45, and an Si substrate 3 having a relative refractive index of 3.4 is located below the core.
- an Si substrate 3 having a relative refractive index of 3.4 is located below the core.
- above the core 2 there is a space having a relative refractive index of 1 or a refractive index matching liquid (not shown) having a refractive index of 1.45 equivalent to that of the stone filled in the slit 6.
- the refractive index distribution perceived by the light beam i.e., in the region where the light beam spreads
- the shape is not vertically symmetrical about the core 2 but is drawn toward the Si substrate 3 below the core.
- the intensity distribution of the light beam has a shape in which the foot spreads to the lower side of the core, and is more affected by the substrate 3.
- the electromagnetic wave of light propagates with the tail of the tail penetrating into the substrate.
- the depth of penetration into the substrate side differs depending on the state of polarization, and the quartz that forms the optical waveguide with the Si substrate originally has an optical waveguide. If the polarization plane of the light beam is different due to the difference in propagation loss, the effect of the substrate will be different and the propagation loss will be different. In other words, the polarization effect is caused by the substrate effect.
- researchers of the present application have found that such a problem becomes a factor that cannot be ignored when further improving the polarization dependence of the optical attenuator.
- the light beam has a spread around the core in all directions, so that the higher the area of the light beam, the more the polarization of the propagation loss due to the substrate effect described above. Dependencies are reduced.
- FIG. 6B shows the exercise position of the shirt in the conventional device described so far.
- the shutter 5 descends from above the optical waveguide toward the substrate 3, and the lower end of the shirt 5 blocks the light beam. The attenuating operation of the light quantity of the propagating light beam is performed.
- the problem of the high refractive index substrate effect described above can be reduced by making the cladding below the core thicker.
- FIG. 9 is a cross-sectional view showing the state of the device including the Si single crystal substrate 3 and the quartz optical waveguide 14 deposited thereon.
- the coefficient of thermal expansion of the Si single crystal was Is smaller than the coefficient of thermal expansion. Therefore, the degree of volume reduction due to the temperature drop after the deposition is larger on the Si substrate 3 side than on the quartz side 14.
- FIG. 9 when the quartz side 14 is turned upward, warpage occurs in the upwardly convex direction.
- the thickness of the Si substrate 3 is usually at least 300 m in a 4-inch system, whereas the thickness of the quartz layer 14 is at most 4 m as described above.
- the thin quartz layer 14 is under a strong compressive stress from the thick Si substrate side 3 because it is about 5 m or less.
- the length of the line segment on the quartz surface and the line segment on the substrate interface in the cross-sectional shape shown in Fig. 9 that is deformed into an upwardly convex shape and receives compressive stress at the Si substrate interface As is clear from the comparison, the amount of stress strain inside the quartz layer 14 is the largest at the interface with the Si substrate 3. The lower above the quartz layer 14, the lower.
- the stress strain inside the quartz layer 14 is alleviated as the distance from the substrate 3 is reduced, the polarization dependence problem of the propagation light loss caused by the stress distortion described above is reduced as the distance from the substrate 3 is reduced. Will be.
- This problem is not limited to the Si substrate, but also occurs when a material having a coefficient of thermal expansion larger than that of quartz is used as the substrate.
- the relative position between the shirt and the light beam in the conventional device shown in Fig. 6B indicates that the lower side of the light beam, whose polarization dependence is relatively strong, is used as the transmission region. Has occurred.
- an object of the present invention is to solve the above-described problems of the prior art and to reduce the polarization dependence in an optical attenuator having a shirt inserted into a slit of an optical waveguide. It is to provide a control method and an optical attenuation control device.
- the optical attenuation control method of the present invention comprises the steps of: providing a slit (6) in the middle of an optical waveguide (14) formed on a substrate (3); The light beam entering the slit from the input side waveguide core (2) on the inner wall of the slit is inserted into the slit, and is reciprocated by the shirt (5).
- a light attenuation amount control method for adjusting and controlling the amount of light guided to the output side waveguide core (2) facing the input side waveguide core (2) by at least partially blocking the light.
- the shirt (5) is moved so that the output light beam area that is transmitted without being shielded from the core expands in the direction toward the substrate from the side far from the substrate (3) in the core area. .
- the output light beam area that is transmitted without being shielded by the shirt is defined as a core area. Expand from the side farther from the substrate toward the substrate.
- a notch (51) is provided on one of the shoulders on the far side of the substrate (3) of the shirt (5), and the shirt is moved in parallel with the substrate.
- the output light beam area that is transmitted without being shielded in the evening expands from the far side of the core area in the direction toward the substrate.

- the light beam entering the slit from the input side waveguide core (2) facing the inner wall of the slit .. At least partially blocked by the reciprocating shirt (5) inserted into the slit
- it is an optical attenuation controller that adjusts and controls the amount of light guided to the output-side waveguide core (2) facing the input-side waveguide core (2) without being shielded by the shirt (5).

- the shirt moving means moves the shutter (5) in the direction of the substrate (3) so as to expand toward the substrate.
- a notch (51) is provided on one of the shoulders on the far side of the substrate (3) of the shirt (5), and the output light transmitted without being shielded by the shirt.

- the shirt is designed such that, as the shirt moves, the output light beam area that is transmitted without being shielded by the shirt extends in the direction from the far side of the core area to the substrate toward the substrate. Since the evening mechanism is configured, the polarization dependence of the optical attenuator that adjusts the light amount by moving the shirt entering the slit of the optical waveguide can be reduced.

- 10 is an actuator
- 11 is a mounting board on which the actuator is mounted
- 12 is an optical waveguide.
- the optical waveguide 14 formed on the optical waveguide substrate 3 is placed above the mounting substrate 11 through the spacer 15 so as to face the mounting substrate 11 so as to face the mounting substrate 11.
- a magnet 16 for generating a magnetic field in the X direction is provided on the back side of the mounting substrate 11 for the purpose described later.
- the optical waveguide 14 is provided with an optical waveguide core 2 for guiding input light and an optical waveguide core 2 for guiding attenuated emitted light, facing each other with a groove (slit) 6 therebetween.
- a groove slit
- the actuary 10 has a plate-like beam 18 extending in the X direction from the end 17 fixed to the mounting substrate 11 and a mirror 5 at the end thereof.
- the whole constitutes a movable body with a cantilever structure.
- a current path is formed by the wiring pattern 19 indicated by FIG. 1 B in the plan view, and when a current flows through this current path, a current component flowing in the current path along the Y direction in FIG.
- the Mouth Lenz force proportional to the product of the magnetic field component in the X direction and the magnet 16 acts in the Z direction in the figure.
- the mirror 15 at the tip of the beam 18 transmits the propagating light by the spring force of the cantilever 18 as shown in FIG. 1A.
- the stationary state is maintained at a position where it is not blocked
- Lorentz force is generated in the Z direction, and the spring force of the cantilever 18 is supplied.
- the mirror 5 can be moved in the Z direction against the pressure, and the mirror 5 can be stopped at another desired position where the Lorentz force and the panel force of the cantilever 18 are balanced.
- the rest position of the mirror 5 can be set to a desired position by changing the current value supplied to the current path.In the above example, the larger the current value, the lower the rest position of the mirror 5 moves. As a result, the amount of blocking of the propagating light increases. That is, The configuration is such that the attenuation value of the light propagating through the optical waveguide 14 is set according to the current value supplied to the cutout 10.
- an important point of the present invention is that, when the propagation light propagating in the groove 6 is viewed in cross section, the shielding region is positioned on the optical waveguide substrate 3 side. This will be described in detail below.
- FIG. 2 shows the principle of operation of the present invention, and is a cross-sectional view showing the positional relationship of the shirt (the above-mentioned mirror) 5 on the movement plane.
- 4 indicated by a broken line indicates the spread region of the optical beam.
- the complete interruption of the light beam by the shirt 5 occurs when the upper surface of the shirt 5 is at the position a in the drawing, which corresponds to the upper end of the spread area 4 of the light beam. Transmission of the light beam starts when the shirt 5 moves from the position a to the position a 'below. Since the transmitted light is the upper component of the light beam (ie, not on the substrate 3 side), the polarization dependence is improved over the previously discussed conventional devices that transmit the lower component of the light beam.
- Fig. 3 shows a characteristic diagram of the output light intensity with the vertical axis.
- the movement area of this shirt 5 is divided into four areas, I, II, III, and IV, depending on the relative position between the shirt and the core on the horizontal axis.
- Region I is the movement of FI G. 3 where the lower end of the shirt 5 descends from above (opposite the substrate 3) and blocks the light beam from above in the conventional FI G. 6B.
- the transmitted light component increases below the light beam (substrate 3 side), and as the lower component increases, the polarization dependence increases. Indicates that the polarization changes within the range between the broken line e and the solid line f in the figure.
- the conventional apparatus, the shutter operates in the I and 11 regions.
- the shirt beam 5 is moved further downward (toward the substrate 3 side), so that the light beam It is characterized in that the component is controlled as transmitted light, and the relative position of the shirt 5 is shown as a characteristic in the III and IV regions of FIG.
- FIGG.48 corresponds to the shirt evening movement from the left end of the III.3 area of IG.3.
- FI G. 4A does not transmit light because the light beam spread area 4 surrounding the core 2 is completely covered with the shirt 5 (mirror) 5 attached to the tip of the cantilever 18 of the evening 10.
- This state is the position a at the left end of the third area of FIG.
- a Lorentz force is generated, and piled on the spring force of the cantilever 18 so that the mirror 5 can move downward, as indicated by the arrow in FIG. That is, it moves toward the substrate 3.
- the shirt light 5 descends from the light beam spread area 4 and the output light quantity gradually increases.
- the a 'position in region III is when shirt shirt 5 almost half blocks light beam spread area 4 (shirt half open). Since the component of the light beam from the upper end of the shutter 5 is controlled as transmitted light in the region I, the problem of polarization dependence shown by the broken line e in the region II is improved.
- FIG. 4B corresponds to the operation completion point (position b) in the IV area of FIG.
- the operation completion point that is, in the operation region near the fully open state of the shirt, the lower component of the light beam is also mixed, but the energy intensity of the upper component is sufficiently strong, so that the component having lower polarization dependence is relative. It is so small that it can be ignored.
- the arrow in FIG. 4B indicates the return direction of shirt 5. The shirt 5 is moved to a position where a desired output light amount is obtained and stopped by the control device or the shirt driving device (not shown).
- the shirt shirt 5 In the state of FI G. 4 B, the shirt shirt 5 must be located below the light beam spread area 4. In this case, the depth of the slit for the movement of the shirt 5 (see reference numeral 6 in FIG. 6A) is determined by the depth to the lower end of the light beam spread area 4 and the height of the shirt 5 ( However, in Fig. 3, the characteristics of the III + IV area are the same as those of the I + 11 area. Usually symmetric, but more precisely, as shown in the prior art FI G. 6C, the center of the light beam is displaced below the center of core 2, so that FI G. 3 Cannot be bilaterally symmetric.
- the shirting operation of the present invention is not limited to the direction perpendicular to the waveguide surface.
- the shielding area can be positioned on the substrate 3 side by a shutter operation parallel to the waveguide surface. It is possible.
- the cutout 51 at the top of the shirt 5 is for initially using the upper component of the light beam for transmission output.
- FIG. 5A-5B shows an embodiment in which the direction of movement of the shirt 5 is parallel to the waveguide surface, and the arrow in FIG. 5A indicates the direction of travel of the shirt 5.
- the arrow on FI G. 5 B indicates the return direction of shirt 5.
- the shirt evening positions of FIG. 4A and FIG. 4B correspond to the shirt positions of FIG. 5A and FIG. 5B.
- the III + of FI G since the upper component of the light beam is used for the transmission output, similarly to the embodiment of FI Gs. 4A-4B, the III + of FI G. The characteristics of the IV region can be realized.
- the embodiments of the present invention are not limited to the above-described embodiments.
- Various modifications such as replacement, change, addition, increase / decrease of the number, and change of the shape are all included in the embodiments of the present invention.
- the configuration in which the Lorentz force is the driving force of the actuator in the variable optical attenuator is exemplified, but the driving means of the present invention is not limited to the Lorentz force.
- electrostatic drive may be used.
- the practice using the cantilever is illustrated, but various forms of the practice can be applied.
- Shirts are not limited to mirrors, but may be shield plates that absorb light.

Abstract

F I G. I Bはその 平面図である。
I , I I, I I I , IVの 4領域に区分されている。
F I G. 4Bは F I G. 3の第 IV領域の動作の完了点 (b位置) に対応して いる。
F I G. 4 Aおよび F I G. 4 Bのシャツ夕位置は、 F I G. 5 Aおよび F I G. 5 B のシャツタ位置に相当する。 F I Gs. 5 A- 5 Bの実施形態においても、 光 ビームの上方成分を透過出力に用いていることから、 F I Gs. 4A— 4Bの 実施形態と同様に、 F I G. 3の第 III + IV領域の特性を実現できる。
