  • sand can be coloured by adding a dye or ' pigment carried in a resin, the coloured resin being added to the sand in a mixing vessel so that the particles of sand are coated with the coloured resin.
  • the pigments used have traditionally been based on chromates, which are toxic, and the resin has been solvent based therefore presenting health, safety and environmental problems in manufacture, use and disposal.
  • the process has required drying of the coated material by processing in heated rotary dryers before packaging, with the consequent expense of heating costs. It has been found difficult to provide satisfactory alternatives due to the degree of weather resistance and resistance to trafficking abrasion required in use.
  • a coating composition for application to a building material including a pigment dispersed in aqueous media, the media including a resin material.
  • the resin material comprises any one or a combination of acrylic resin, polyester resin, polyurethane resin, epoxy resin, vinyl resin, styrene resin, or styrene acrylic resin, the or each said resin or resins being in the form of an aqueous solution, an aqueous dispersion or an aqueous emulsion.

  • a coating composition including pigment dispersed in aqueous media, the media including a plurality of resins, at least one of said resins being in the form of an aqueous solution and forming at least 10% w/w of the coating composition, and at least one other of the resins being in the form of an aqueous dispersion or aqueous emulsion.
  • the resins comprise any one or a combination of acrylic resin, polyester resin, polyurethane resin, epoxy resin, vinyl resin, styrene resin or styrene acrylic resin.
  • the dispersed or emulsified resin forms at least 20% w/w of the coating composition, and desirably forms at least 30% w/w of the coating composition.
  • the media includes both a dispersed resin and an emulsified resin with a combined proportion of at least 40% w/w of the coating composition and desirably at least 60% w/w of the coating composition.
  • the ratio of emulsified and dispersed resin to soluble resin is between 3:1 and 4:1 by weight.

  • the resins comprise styrene acrylic solution, acrylic dispersion, and styrene acrylic emulsion resins. It has been found that to achieve the necessary degree of weather resistance the combined emulsion and dispersion part must be greater than 20% by weight of the coating composition.
  • the coating composition is added into a mixing vessel containing particulate building materials such as aggregate, sand, lightweight aggregates or stone chippings.
  • the mixing vessel may be a paddle mixer, a tumbling mixer, or a helical coil mixer, and the coating composition is sprayed or poured into the particulate building material, while the building material is being agitated within the mixing vessel.
  • the coating composition is mixed into the particulate building material until evenly distributed on the particle surfaces of the building material. Typical additional rates are shown in Table 3 for different building materials.
  • agitation continues and the coating dries and hardens on the particulate building materials while in the mixer.
  • a mixing time of approximately 10 mins is required for the coating composition to dry and harden on sand, and this may be longer, up to 30 mins for coarser particle particulate material such as gravel or chippings.
  • the dried, coated particulate material is then emptied from the mixer and packaged into bags.
  • the dried coated material is used as a decorative aggregate or planting material for gardens, driveways, paths, planters, etc.
  • the coated particulate building material may be used as a constituent, in, for instance, concrete or reconstructed stone, being formed by moulding into bricks, blocks, roof tiles, wailing units etc.
  • the coating composition may be applied by brushing, spraying, or dipping to the surface of formed or cast building materials such as hard fined ceramic bodies, bricks, blocks, slabs, roof tiles or similar.
  • Particulate building materials coated with coating compositions to the above formulations have shown suitable water and frost resistance for use in outdoor environments throughout the year.
  • the coating composition disclosed is a water soluble, non-toxic material which in contrast with previously known suitable coating compositions has much improved ease of processing with much reduced health, safety and environmental risks.
