Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a system for monitoring the loss of a handset, such as a cell phone.
  • This problem is not only limited to mobile telephones, but can generally occur with any type of handset, for example also with a so-called PDA organizer, a portable CD player, a portable cassette player ("Walkman"), a pager, a remote control, etc. All these portable devices have in common that they can easily be left behind or even stolen by the owner or user, the user possibly noticing the loss until late and then hardly or not at all finding the corresponding device again is possible.
  • the present invention is therefore based on the object of proposing a way of determining the loss of such a mobile device or handset in good time and of being able to notify the respective user.
  • the dependent claims each define preferred and advantageous embodiments of the present invention.
  • it is proposed to assign to the mobile part to be monitored a portable receiver to be carried by the user of the mobile part, which forms a transmitting / receiving combination with the mobile part.
  • a wirelessly transmitted signal for example a radio signal, is generated by the handset to be monitored and is to be evaluated by the receiver. If the receiver cannot receive the signal sent by the handset or can no longer receive it properly, an alarm is generated by the receiver, which can be, for example, an acoustic alarm tone, an optical signaling or a vibration alarm.
  • the receiver interacting with the handset is to be carried by the respective user, so that the receiver generally triggers the alarm if the distance between the receiver and the respective handset becomes too great, which is the case, for example , if the handset has been left unintentionally in a certain place by the respective user or even stolen.
  • the receiver can be designed in particular in the form of a unit to be attached to the respective user, for example in the form of a belt clip, a so-called headset or the like.
  • the handset can regularly generate the signal to be received and evaluated by the receiver. As long as the receiver receives the signals generated by the handset, there is no reaction. However, if a predetermined distance between the receiver and the handset is exceeded, this means that the receiver can no longer receive a signal from the handset, so that the alarm described above is triggered. The user then has the option of returning to a defined range in which the signal sent by the handset can be received by the receiver carried by the user, which results in As a result, the alarm is deactivated again by the receiver.
  • the proposed system thus also provides a simple possibility of locating the handset, since in this case the alarm is preferably activated by the receiver until the distance between the receiver and the handset has fallen below a certain tolerable limit.
  • the present invention is particularly suitable for monitoring, but is not limited to, the loss of mobile telephones. Rather, as has already been indicated above, the present invention is generally applicable for monitoring relatively small and handy mobile devices, which are consequently used by can easily be left behind or even stolen by the appropriate owner or user.
  • the receiver which receives and evaluates the signal sent by the mobile telephone also generates a signal to be received and evaluated by the mobile telephone, so that the mobile telephone can be locked, for example, by locking the keyboard can deactivate itself if, when the predetermined distance between the receiver and the mobile phone is exceeded, the signal sent by the receiver can no longer be received.
  • the locking of the keyboard of the mobile phone is preferably maintained as long as the predetermined distance between the receiver and the mobile phone is exceeded, i.e. until the mobile phone can again receive the signal sent by the receiver with a predetermined minimum signal level.

  • the receiver 2 will no longer be able to receive the radio signal transmitted by the cell phone 3, in particular if the distance between the cell phone 3 and the receiver 2 exceeds a certain tolerable limit value, which depends on the transmission power level of the radio signal generated by the cell phone 3 is. In this way, the receiver 2 can reliably determine if the mobile phone 3 has been left unintentionally by the user who is carrying the receiver 2, or if the mobile phone 3 has even been stolen.
  • the alarm is activated by the evaluation unit 6 until the signal level of the received radio signal again corresponds to the predetermined minimum signal level, which is the case, for example, when the distance between the receiver 2 and the cell phone 3 is reduced again to a certain tolerable limit value becomes.
  • the receiver 2 also has a transmitter unit 8 for generating a special radio signal, which transmits via the air interface 4 and the antenna 9 to the mobile phone 3 and from there via the antenna 18 and the air interface 10 and from a correspondingly designed receiving unit 15 is received.

In this way it is ensured that the mobile telephone 3, if it has been left lying or stolen, cannot be used by an unauthorized person, ie no more entries are possible.
  • the deactivation of the mobile telephone 3 is maintained as long as the evaluation unit 16 determines that the signal level of the radio signal received by the receiver 2 is too low. If the mobile telephone 3 is again within a tolerable range with respect to the receiver 2, this results in an increase in the signal level of the radio signal received by the receiver 2 above the predetermined minimum signal level, which is determined accordingly by the evaluation unit 16 and passed on to the control unit 17, which then unlocks the keyboard 19 again and thus reactivates the mobile phone 3.
  • the previously mentioned tolerable ranges, at which the receiver 2 has not yet activated the alarm 7 or the mobile phone 3 has not yet locked the keyboard 19, do not have to match, but can have different dimensions.

  • the evaluation unit 6 generates this message when a first distance d1 between the mobile telephone 3 and the receiver 2 is exceeded, which can be achieved technically with the aid of a transit time measurement with a good signal level of the received radio signal. That If the evaluation unit 6 determines a signal transit time of the received radio signal that exceeds a certain limit value, the message is generated.
  • a second distance d2> dl is exceeded, the alarm 7 is finally triggered, this being able to be detected as described by monitoring the signal level of the received radio signal with respect to the predetermined minimum signal level or by detecting an interruption in the radio connection.
