Definitions
- the present invention relates to a frame for supporting table tops, comprising structural elements that when properly connected to each other, give to the frame different geometrical configurations.
- writing desks and tables comprise a working top supported by a frame having a plurality of legs resting on the ground.
- the frame generally comprises a plurality of structural elements consisting of beams provided at the ends with joints allowing their mutual connection through fastening means such as adhesives, screws and so on.
- the main drawback of the known frames consists in that the beams must be designed and manufactured according to the different geometries of the frame to be produced, depending on the type of table or writing desk to be supported by said frame.
- a further drawback connected to the preceding one consists in that these structural elements of different type oblige to use different packagings according to their geometry, especially when the table is sold and shipped in a disassembled condition, so as to increase again the total selling price.
- the object of the present invention is to remove the above mentioned drawbacks.
- a first object of the invention is to provide a modular frame for supporting tables allowing to carry out many different geometrical structures to be associated to different shapes and sizes of table tops, although said frame consists of a limited number of different connected structural elements.
- Another object is to provide a modular frame to which support boards and supplementary accessories such as phone or video supports and so on may be anchored.
- a further object is to provide a frame that can be assembled in a simple and quick way even by an inexperienced person like the common end user.
- Another object is to provide a modular frame to which the table supporting legs can be removably associated.
- a modular frame for supporting table tops that according to the main claim comprises one or more structural elements connected to each other at their ends through joint means, said frame being characterized in that each structural element comprises a beam provided with a flange at one end and a counterflange at the other end, so that each structural element can be connected to another element through joint means connecting said flange belonging to one element to said counterflange belonging to the other element to be connected, said joint means allowing the mutual rotation of said structural elements on the plane defined by said frame so as to form different geometrical configurations.
- the flanges and counterflanges are each provided with grip means consisting of protrusions adapted to be coupled to corresponding seats made on their contact surfaces and adapted to prevent the mutual rotation of the structural elements so as to define a plurality of predetermined forms.
- fastening means allow to block the structural elements in the selected positions.
- the present invention allows to carry out with a limited number of structural elements even of different length, frames having different geometrical configurations and forms that can be fitted to the various tops. Still advantageously the invention reduces the number of production versions, and in comparison with the traditional tables reduces considerably both the production and storage and shipping costs of the product. Said objects and advantages will be better understood by reading the following description of a preferred embodiment given as an illustrative and non-limiting example by making reference to the accompanying sheets of drawings in which:
- FIG. 1 is an isometric view of a writing desk provided with the modular frame of the present invention
- - Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of a structural element of the frame of Fig. 1 ;
- - Fig. 3 is a partially sectional plan view of the structural element of Fig. 2;
- - Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view of the joining points between two structural elements of the frame of Fig. 1 and a frame support leg;
- FIG. 1 is a sectional view of the structural element connected to another joining member with the frame of Fig. 1 ; and - Figs. 6 to 10 show different geometrical configurations carried out with some structural elements of the modular frame of Fig. 1.
- a writing desk S carried out with the modular frame 1 of the present invention supporting a table top P is shown in Fig. 1 where it is generally indicated with reference numeral 1.
- Said frame comprises three structural elements 2 consisting of beams 21 , 22, 23 mutually connected at their ends through joining means shown in detail in Figs. 2 and 3, generally indicated with reference numeral 3 and supported by legs 4 resting on the ground.
- each structural element 2 has at one end a first flange 3a to be coupled to a corresponding counterflange 3b belonging to a similar adjacent structural element 2 so as to allow the mutual rotation of the structural elements 2 about a perpendicular axis 5 defined by the joining means 3 that subsequently block said elements in the desired orientation.
- the structural elements 2 take different geometrical configurations so as to match the support form to the form of the top P as shown in detail in Figs. 6 to 10 and better explained hereinafter.
- each flange 3a and counterflange 3b is provided with grip means 6 shown in detail in Fig. 3.
- These grip means comprise protrusions 61 belonging to counterflange 3b and radial seats 62 belonging to flange 3a adapted to be mutually coupled according to a selected direction.
- Coupling between seats 62 and protrusions 61 blocks the mutual rotation of each structural element 2 so as to define a plurality of predetermined mutual positions of the structural elements 2. This allows the user when assembling the frame 1 , to place easily the structural elements 2 in the predetermined mutual positions chosen by the manufacturer according to the model of table or writing desk.
- the user blocks the mutual position of the frames through the joining means 8 shown in detail in Fig. 4.
- said joining means consist of a screw 9 coupled in a first through hole 10 shown in Fig. 2, made on the counterflange 3b at the rotation axis 5 of the structural elements 2.
- the threaded portion of the screw 9 is engaged in a nut thread belonging to a fastening member consisting of a key 14 of a generally parallelepipedal elongated shape and having an outer surface conjugated to the surface of a second hole 13 made on each flange 3a and counterflange 3b.
- a fastening member consisting of a key 14 of a generally parallelepipedal elongated shape and having an outer surface conjugated to the surface of a second hole 13 made on each flange 3a and counterflange 3b.
- the hole 13 belonging to flange 3a is a through hole of a frustum conical development. This is also true for the hole 13 belonging to counterflange 3b with the only difference that said hole has a bottom with a hole 10 through which the stem of the connection screw 9 is passing.
- the key 14 has a generally parallelepipedal shape and has its ends 14a and 14b coupled to corresponding seats 15 made near the edge of hole 13 at the side of surface 7 opposite to the side coupled with counterflange 3b. It is clear that on tightening the screw 9 also the mutual position of the connected structural elements is blocked like for instance the elements 21 and 22 shown in Fig. 4.
- the key 14 is arranged on two transversal holes made on a leg 4 near the frustum conical end portion 12 and protrudes at the ends with the lengths 14a and 14b to be coupled with the above mentioned seats 15.
- the portion 12 of the leg 4 is advantageously inserted into coaxial holes 13 of the coupled flange and counterflange and the key 14 together with screw 9, ensure the mutual blocking action between the structural elements 21 and 22, as well as between said structural elements and the leg 4 of frame 1.
- the screw 9 at its head has an annular seat 16 adapted to receive an anchor member 17 allowing to fix the top P to the frame 1.
- the anchor member 17 consists of a stop dowel 18 coupled to a nut thread belonging to a cylindrical support 19 connected to the top P and provided with a seat receiving the head of the screw 9.
- connection of the top P to frame 1 is particularly simple and reliable.
- the possible removal of the top P and its replacement are easy and quick to be effected.
- each beam 21 , 22, 23 is provided with a plurality of holes having their axis perpendicular to the main axis of said beams and also to the axis of the holes 13 made on flanges 3a and counterflanges 3b.
- a plurality of support members 25 can be removably associated to said holes and anchored to the structural element 2 through second fastening means 26 of the same kind of the preceding ones, as shown in detail in Figs. 1 and 5.
- each fastening means 26 consists of a screw 29, a washer 31 and a key 30.
- the support 25 is fixed to the beam 2 by the screw 29 which is coupled in a transversal through hole and to each beam 21 , 22, 23 and engaged in the nut thread of the key 30 with interposition of a washer 31 that is in contact with the screw head on one side and the mouth of hole 27 on the other side.
- the key 30 is arranged on transversal openings 251 made on the member 25 near the frustum conical end 28.
- the ends of key 30 protrude from the member 25 and are engaged on conjugated seats 32 made close to the hole 27 as shown in Fig. 5.
- the structural element 2 as previously stated, consists of a beam that may be made of different lengths.
- different geometrical configurations of the frame may be obtained according to the form of the tops to be fixed to said frame.
- the top 101 is associated to the rectangular frame 201 formed with structural elements of two different lengths.
- the tops 103, 104 and 105 of Figs. 8, 9 and 10 respectively have frames formed by structural elements of one size only.
- joining means 3 consisting of flange 3a and counterflange 3b, they are preferably integral with the structural element 2, but they could also be made as independent elements to be removably associated to the structural element 2.
- a preferred embodiment of the structural element or beam 2 is made of molded plastic material, possibly including fillers to increase its strength.
- the user may operatively carry out assembly of the frame in a simple and quick autonomous way by connecting and mutually moving the structural elements 2 one relative to the other until the desired geometrical configuration is attained with the aid of the grip means 6. Then each fastening member 8 is inserted in the corresponding hole. Then the screw 9 is fixed blocking the structural elements 2 in the desired position. Finally the table top P is applied and fixed to the frame through the fastening screws 18. If desired, the supplementary support members 25 may also be applied so as to obtain the configuration of the writing desk S best meeting the needs of the user.
