  • the appropriate maximum legal alcohol amount is retrieved from the database and forwarded through the interfacing means 22 to the mobile phone 12.
  • the processor in the mobile phone 12 compares the alcohol amount value detected by the sensor with the maximum legal' alcohol amount retrieved from the database 20, and a determination is output to the user which indicates whether the alcohol amount detected by the sensor is above or below the maximum legal alcohol amount for the jurisdiction concerned.
  • the information provided to the user may be in the form of a visual indication on a screen 31 or as an audible indication from a speaker 33.
  • the breathalysing system 10 may be arranged so that the processor in the mobile phone 12 automatically transmits a signal indicative that the user requires transport when the sensed alcohol amount is above the retrieved maximum legal alcohol amount, as the user is not legally able to drive a vehicle.
  • a signal may be directed to a remote transport station which may be a taxi company, and the signal may include information usable by a Global Positioning System (GPS) to automatically determine the location of the user.

  • the maximum legal amount for the jurisdiction concerned is transferred from the- database 20 through the interface 34 to the processor 38 where the maximum legal amount is compared with the detected alcohol amount value. A determination as to whether the detected alcohol amount value is above or below the maximum legal amount is then transferred from the processor 38 through the interfacing means 22 to the mobile device, 12, 14, 16, 18 where an indication is provided to the user as to whether the detected alcohol amount is above or below the maximum legal amount.

  • the mobile device may include a local database, the local database being arranged to store information relating to the maximum legal amount of alcohol in breath for a plurality of jurisdictions.

  • a refresh signal containing updated maximum legal alcohol amount information is periodically sent from the remote database 20 to the local database.
  • the local database can be used instead of the remote database 20 to provide the maximum legal alcohol amount for comparison purposes instead of the remote database 20.
  • the interfacing means may take the form of a data carrier which is arranged to physically connect with the mobile device. With this arrangement, the data carrier would hold a master database containing current maximum legal alcohol amount information, and the interfacing means would facilitate transferral of the information stored in the data carrier to the local database when the data carrier is connected to the mobile device.
  • the communications means of the mobile device may include a user interface or facilitate connection to a user interface.
  • a user interface may be a keypad for facilitating manual entering of updated maximum legal alcohol amount information into the local database by a user.
  • the mobile device may be arranged to receive location information directly from a user by providing an appropriate user interface.
  • an important aspect of the invention is the provision of a mobile computing device which is arranged to carry out a plurality of functions, such as word processing, diary recording, web browsing and so on, and which is also able to carry out a breathalysing function using processing means of the computing device.

Abstract

La présente invention concerne un dispositif portatif (12, 14, 16, 18) qui comprend un détecteur d'alcool prévu pour détecter la présence d'alcool dans l'haleine d'un utilisateur et qui génère un signal indiquant la quantité d'alcool détectée dans l'haleine. Le dispositif (12, 14, 16, 18) comprend également un moyen qui reçoit des informations de position indiquant la sphère de compétence territoriale dans laquelle se trouve le dispositif et un moyen de communication prévu pour communiquer avec une première base de données (20) contenant des informations spécifiant la quantité légale maximale d'alcool dans l'haleine pour une pluralité de sphères de compétence territoriale. Le moyen de communication est prévu pour retrouver, dans la première base de données (20), la quantité légale maximale d'alcool dans l'haleine pour la sphère de compétence territoriale dans laquelle se trouve le dispositif (12, 14, 16, 18), lorsque les informations de position sont reçues. Le dispositif comprend également un moyen de sortie qui produit une détermination indiquant si la quantité d'alcool détectée est supérieure ou inférieure à la quantité légale maximale d'alcool dans l'haleine pour la sphère de compétence territoriale dans laquelle se trouve ledit dispositif. .
