  • TITLE A MATTING SUITABLE FOR USE AS A FLOOR/WALL COVERING
  • the present invention relates to a matting that is particularly suited for use as a floor/wall covering in potentially wet or otherwise contaminated environments.
  • the invention was developed initially for use in animal enclosures such as stables, stalls, floats or the like and will be described hereinafter with reference primarily to this particular application. However, it will be appreciated that various embodiments of the inventive matting can be used in a wide variety of different applications such as in children's playgrounds, manufacturing environments, external pathways, tennis courts, or gardening systems and the like and accordingly is not limited to the described preferred fields of use.
  • This new bedding is in the form of a matting comprising a compressible support layer covered with an upper layer of strong waterproof material.
  • the matting is formed with a plurality of apertures sized to at least allow passage of animal fluid waste from the upper cover layer to a number of drainage channels that extend along an underside of the matting.
  • the drainage channels are formed in the underside of the support layer.
  • the drainage channels are formed in the wall or the floor covered by the matting when in situ.
  • conduits containing flushing fluid are disposed adjacent one end of these drainage channels so that washing fluid can be passed through the underside channels.
  • the passage of cleaning fluid through these channels will be of minimal use as it will not effectively remove that waste which is entrapped within and under the support layer.
  • the system effectively remove waste caught within the vertical openings connecting the apertures in the cover to the underside channels, as the flushing fluid can not run upwardly into these areas.
  • the sub-flooring which is usually made of concrete or other porous materials, it will be hard to effectively clean waste from this surface.

  • the drainage duct may comprise one or more large voids beneath the surface of the outer cover that extend both along and across the matting.
  • Other variations include intersecting passages or other labyrinthine formations.
  • the matting includes the compressible support layer of the first preferred embodiment, but instead of having separately formed drainage ducts disposed below the flexible cover layer, the drainage ducts are formed integrally within the cover layer, thereby being defined by and/or embedded within the matting, the apertures or drainage passages extending from an outer surface of the cover layer to the drainage ducts below.

  • the ducts will be aligned so as to be able to take advantage of any fall provided for in the flooring or walling and may include at or adjacent the outlet suitable connecting manifolds and/or valve means and the like so as to control and direct the fluid discharge from the ducting to and through the outlet.
