Definitions
- This invention relates to an austenitic-ferritic stainless steel, super-duplex type, for application in media that require materials with high mechanical strength, high resistance to pitting corrosion, good behavior against intergranular corrosion and with great hot deformation capacity to allow the manufacture of hot and cold seamless pipes.
- Austenitic-ferritic stainless steels alloys are known since the 1930s and 1940s and are based primarily on compositions with high chromium, nickel and molybdenum content.
- US Patent No. 2,432,616, requested in 1945 by FRANKS et al. which refers to alloys with high mechanical resistance at high temperatures, being one of the proposed alloys composed of a maximum 0.35% carbon, 2.0 Maximum% of manganese, 1.0% maximum of silicon, 2 - 40% of nickel, 10 - 30% of chromium, 1 - 5% of molybdenum, 0.25% of maximum nitrogen, 0.5 - 5.0% of tungsten and 0.1 - 0.7% of boron.
- Duplex steels (ferritic-austenitic) have a composition with a chromium percentage of 22%, 5% nickel, 3% molybdenum and 0.17% nitrogen, which gives them good corrosion resistance in marine and marine environments. Similar.
- super-duplex steels have 25% chromium, 6.8% nickel, 3.7% molybdenum and 0.27% nitrogen in their composition, to achieve a pitting corrosion resistance index greater than 40. Increase in the percentages used of chromium, nickel and molybdenum with respect to duplex steels, provides superior properties in terms of mechanical resistance and corrosion.
- alloys of duplex and super-duplex steels to incorporate, in their standard compositions, although in smaller quantities, other elements such as manganese, sulfur, silicon, copper, tungsten, magnesium, aluminum, rare earths and others.
- Patent GB 2 160 221, of NIPPON KOKAN KK refers to a ferritic-austenitic stainless steel for the manufacture of seamless pipes with an improved impact resistance, proposing for this the addition of soluble aluminum in an amount not exceeding 0.02% The rest of the components remain approximately within the usual ranges for this type of ferritic-austenitic steels.
- US Patent 4,604,887, of OHTSUBO et al. Refers to a manufacturing method that avoids surface defects, as well as the faults in the head and tail of the tubes, thanks to special rolling conditions and a chemical composition special, which differs fundamentally from other duplex steels in a high copper content and in an addition in small amounts of aluminum.
- European Patent 0 339 004, of SANDVIK AG refers to an austenitic-ferritic stainless steel which includes in its tungsten alloy, vanadium, and cerium to provide the steel obtained with high resistance in environments with chloride ions and of preferential application in the manufacture of medical implants.
- a steel of similar characteristics is also described in European Patent 0 220 141 of SANTRADE LTD.
- Patent GB 2 203 680 of NIPPON YAKIN KOGYO CO. LTD. , refers to a continuous manufacturing process of a ferritic-austenitic stainless steel, for which tungsten and vanadium are added in significant quantities, as well as boron in very small quantities, keeping the rest of the elements within the usual percentages.
- European Patent No. 545 753, of SUMITOMO METAL INDUSTRIES LTD. refers to a super-duplex steel with a high mechanical and corrosion resistance, but with a very reduced intermetallic precipitation tendency, the main characteristic of the proposed alloy being the addition of tungsten in percentages greater than usual, since, of in this way, the amounts of molybdenum and chromium can be reduced and, consequently, minimize the negative effects of these elements in regard to the precipitation of intermetallic compounds. They are also added, in small amounts, other elements such as vanadium, calcium, magnesium, boron or rare earths in order to improve the hot ductility of the steel obtained.
- SVILUPPO MATERIALI S.p.A. refers to a stainless steel alloy, as well as the corresponding procedure for obtaining, from the aforementioned alloy, seamless tubes usable in acidic environments, such as oil exploration.
- the alloy object of this invention is characterized mainly by the incorporation of percentages of tungsten and copper higher than those normally used, to improve the mechanical and corrosion resistance properties.
- European Patent No. 566 814 of FORONI S.p.A., refers to a super-duplex steel with high corrosion resistance in an acidic or alkaline environment, for which amounts of copper and tungsten greater than usual are added.
- the present invention relates to an alloy of a super-duplex steel that, while maintaining its properties of mechanical and corrosion resistance, is characterized by high ductility that allows the formation of both hot and cold tubes quickly, easily and economically.
- two unusual elements are added in the standard of these steels, such as boron and calcium and in adequate proportions to achieve the required ductility, having also optimized the percentages of the rest of the alloy components for Maintain good mechanical strength and high resistance to pitting corrosion. Due to this tight composition, you get a reduction in the cost of obtaining this steel, since it is not necessary to add other elements, some of them of high cost, such as tungsten, copper, magnesium, vanadium or rare earths such as cerium.
- the stainless steel object of the invention is characterized by the following composition:
- a steel of this composition in addition to a good mechanical strength (elastic limit> 600 MPa), a high resistance to pitting corrosion (CPT> 602, according to ASTM G48) and a good behavior to intergranular corrosion, has as its main characteristic a high capacity for hot deformation, caused by the addition of boron and calcium.
- the addition of boron and calcium in significant amounts gives the alloy object of this invention a high hot ductility, which makes it especially suitable in a specific manufacturing process integrated from the melting of the steel to the final obtaining of a seamless tube hot and cold with a dimension of up to 240 mm. diameter.
- the composition described for the alloy object of the invention allows to obtain good corrosion resistance properties, thus being especially suitable for use in corrosive environments, such as seawater.
- This alloy has been specially developed to obtain seamless tubes, following a specific manufacturing process that includes the following phases:
