Definitions

  • a disadvantage of such adaptation of measurements is that mineral wool plates are manufactured in several standard sizes intended to be used for the same purposes. This is in particular true as concerns adaptation of the plates to various lengths of the building frame cavities. Therefore there has been a wish that mineral wool plates be manufactured to fit several different widths/lengths of the building frame parts or of frame parts the width and length of which are within a certain interval. Size adaptation which is made by cutting the plates involves a lot of work and leads to waste of material, and sometimes also appearance of dust.
  • a mineral wool plate comprises a large number of individual fibres having different lengths and diameters.
  • a binder to the mineral wool material.
  • Said binder generally is in the form of drops of a thermosetting resin which make the fibres stick to each other at the points where the fibres are in contact with each other. A softening thereby can be made in that the plate is worked so that some of said points of binding are broken up.
  • DE G 81 27 1 96.4 and DE G 81 38 598.6 describe various apparatus for continuously felting or mangling the corners of the edge portions.
  • DE 32 03 622 describes how one or more edge portions are acted on or are mangled by means of pressure rolls or endless belts. Pressure plates, rather that the said rolls or bands, can be used for performing the deformation of the edge area or areas.
  • the patent specification contains a false reference to the hysteresis character which is present in mineral wool which is supplied with a binder. It is stated that the working can be so strong that "der Mate ⁇ alSullivan des Faser notiones aussertechnisch des ublichen Hysteresisschleifetrust".
  • EP 436.681 Another patent publication in this area is EP 436.681 .
  • DE 32 03 622 Another patent publication in this area is referred to DE 32 03 622, and it is hereby stated that the process of said DE patent does not provide a sufficiently equal releasing of the fibre joints.
  • EP 436.681 additionally contains criticism of the invention according to DE 32 03 622.
  • EP 436.681 suggests that the mineral wool plate be supported and be compressed during a felting process.
  • the very felting process introduces a large number of deformations, preferably in two stages, whereby the number of deformations in the first stage should be more than in the second stage, whereas the felting depth should be greater in the second stage than in the first stage.
  • WO 94/1 9555 suggests rolling as a method of providing continuous, softer portions in a mineral wool plate.
  • the softened area has to be continuous.
  • sizes of the depth of the softened areas are mentioned.
  • Mineral wool plates have very varying ability of regaining their original sizes after having been deformed. The reason is, among other things, that some of the fibres have not only been bent but have also changed their positions in the structure In case of a reasonable deformation it is supposed that such dislocations mostly concern fibres or fibre portions which are not fixed by means of a binder. In case of using reasonable amounts of binder it is supposed, however, that this relates to most fibres. In case of a stronger deformation also several fibre connection points are broken Also fibres which originally are fixed in the structure by means of binder thereby can change their positions
  • the disadvantage with the above described softening methods is that a part of the width/length gets lost since the mineral wool material is not completely elastic. Therefore there is obtained a remaining deformation which grows greater the more the edge portion is softened.
  • the present invention now provides the possibility of softening an edge portion of a mineral wool plate so that it can easily be compressed so as to fit a building frame cavity which is narrower or shorter than the original dimensions of the plate, and still said softening does not give any remaining deformation of importance
  • the invention is based on a careful analysis of the problem, the shortcomings of the previously described solutions and a large number of tests and measu ⁇ ngs.
  • the studies of the existing structural relationships in mineral wool plates in which the fibres to a substantial extent are oriented in the plane of the plate have been important for the origin of the invention.
  • one or more edge areas of a mineral wool plate is/are softened by a mechanical working in that the working is made at several discrete portions along the edge, and whereby intermediate portions are left un-worked.
  • the compressing should be at least 20%, preferably 30%, and it is rational to perform the working after the plates have been piled and preferably also after they have been enclosed in a thin packaging material, for instance a plastic foil.
  • the working may preferably is performed in that elongated deformation devices are pressed into the edge or edges of the mineral wool plates. Said deformation devices thereby should be oriented mainly perpendicularly to the fibre plane of the plates, which plane is normally also the plane of the very plates.
  • the deformation devices preferably have a rounded cross section shape and they should move mainly perpendicularly inwards and outwards in relation to the edge surfaces of the plates.
  • the chosen impression depth, and to some extent also the spacings between the impressions, depends on what degree of softness is intended to be obtained.
  • the invention also includes an apparatus for executing the above mentioned method.
  • An especially suitable apparatus is obtained by combining two or more deformation devices on a common shaft which is perpendicular to the plane of the mineral wool plates and to the plane on which said plates are transferred by some type of conveyor. Said shaft thereby should be located on such distance from the plates that the deformation means penetrate to a suitable depth into the edges of the plates. The location of said shaft in relation to the conveyor ought to be easily adjusted.
  • FIG. 1 discloses an apparatus for executing the method of the invention.
  • Figure 2 discloses an alternative embodiment of the deformations means.
  • Figures 3 and 4 are diagrams which show the effect of the invention.
  • Figure 1 shows side view and a top plan view of an apparatus for executing the invention.
  • standard elements like drive means which are of no importance to the invention have been omitted.
  • the drawing shows how several packs 1 comprising several mineral wool plates 2 enclosed in a plastic foil 3 are moved in the direction following the arrows carried by a conveyor belt 4 which, supported by rolls 5, extending over a drive roll 6 and a turning roll 7.
  • a conveyor belt 4 which, supported by rolls 5, extending over a drive roll 6 and a turning roll 7.
  • an upper conveyor belt 8 having support rolls 9, a drive roll 1 0 and a turning roll 1 1 .
  • the upper conveyor belt 8 is, by a means not shown in the drawing, adjustable so that the distance thereof to the lower conveyor belt 4 can be varied.
  • Normally said upper conveyor belt 8 is set in a position in which the packs, in the drawing represented by the pack 1 , are compressed during their passage between the conveyor belts 4 and 8, as indicated in the side view.
  • the conveyor belts 4 and 8 move with the same speed.
  • Each of said deformation means comprises a shaft 14 on which two elongated connection plates are mounted, an upper connection plate 1 5 and a lower connection plate 1 6.
  • Two deformation devices 1 7 and 1 8 extend rotatably between said plates 1 5 and 1 6 parallelly to the shaft 14 and on the same distance therefrom.
  • the deformation devices are formed as metal tubes having a diameter of 35 mm.
  • the shafts 14 are rotated, as shown with the arrows, by an apparatus which is not shown in the figure so that the peripheral speed of the deformation devices correspond to the speed of the conveyor belts 4 and 8.
  • the shafts are also mounted in such relationship to the packs 1 of mineral wool plates which are moved between the conveyor belts 4 and 8 that said deformation devices are impressed into the plate packs as said packs pass the respective deformation means.
  • the distance between the deformation means 1 2A, 1 3A and 1 2B, 1 3B, respectively, is adjusted so that the deformation means of the pair 1 3A, 1 3B get in contact with the packs 1 substantially intermediate the places where the pair of deformation means 1 2A, 1 2B have contacted the packs.
  • For making it possible to process plates of packs having different height it is possible to either substitute the deformation means by such means having greater or less effective height or to make said deformation means adjustable by forming same by several parts which are telescopically adjustable in relation to each other. If it is desired to reduce the distance between the processed portions of the plate edges in order to obtain a stronger working without providing a deeper impressing therein it is possible to form each deformation means with several deformation tubes, for instance three tubes as shown in figure 2.
  • the shaft 1 9 carries two pairs of three point connection plates 20 to which three tube-shaped deformation devices 21 are connected.
  • Figure 3 illustrates the effect of the invention.
  • the vertical axis of the diagram represents the load to which a plate is subjected when an edge thereof is subjected to a load force.
  • the horizontal axis represents the dimension of the mineral wool plate in the direction of the load acting on the plate.
  • the diagram should be considered as a principle diagram, since the relationship between load and deformation varies strongly depending of the degree of orientation, the density, the content of binder, the fibre diameter, the distribution of fibre diameters and several other parameters.
  • the full line curve A illustrates the situation during a successive deformation of an unworked mineral wool plate.
  • the curve A illustrates this as far as to the point P, whereby the point P is located on the part of the curve where the relationship load/deformation is still substantially linear.
  • the point P also represents the degree of deformation which is needed for the plate according to the invention to thereafter exhibit a certain increased flexibility.
  • curve C is obtained according to a comparative picture.
  • This curve C basically has the same shape as curve B but leads back to the starting point, that is point 0, or to a point which is located very close to point 0, namely point 2.
  • the edge working according to the invention leads to a certain increased elasticity of the edge portion providing substantially less remaining deformation.
  • the load/deformation curve for the mineral wool plate which has been worked according to the invention is slightly different from that of a corresponding plate which has been worked in traditional way to the same total elasticity, represented by point R.
  • the plate which has been worked in traditional way follows a curve M of substantially the same type as that of an unworked plate, represented by curve a.
  • a plate which has been worked according to the invention follows a curve which is steeper at the beginning, see curve N. This means that the plate has a greater measurement stability and rigidity even if the plate can be deformed so as to be adapted to the space having less free dimensions.
