  • the legs must then be immediately straightened and while doing this the learner will note that legs and feet spon ⁇ taneously return in line with the body position causing the foot platform to rotate and translate, thus beginning the curve .
  • the learner can then control the entire curve by simply straightening up the legs slowly and gradually.
  • the thrust exerted by the legs while straightening causes the arm 15 to move until it reaches the lateral position in Fig. 2 while simultaneous rotation of the legs will cause the foot platform to rotate round its own axis so as to carry out the first 90° of the curve leftwards.
  • a dynamic movement is set up which is substantially similar to the winding line followed by skis on snow.
  • Simulated curves can be wider or narrower by altering the length of time taken to straighten out the legs. The slower this is done the slower will the legs rotate and therefore the radius of the simulated curve will also be greater. If leg straightening is done quickly the simulated curve radius will be smaller, just as happens with real ski-ing.
  • One of the most frequent causes of leg fractures by begin- ners is that of suddenly forcing foot rotation without first making the anticipatory curve movement which happens when they do not know how it should be done.
  • the great propaedeutic value of this apparatus lies partly in the fact that it functions correctly only if the anti- cipatory curving movement is made, thereby obliging the beginner to learn this important stage in the movements.
