Definitions

  • cable marker There are two basic types of cable marker. One is of generally C-shape so that it can be clipped on to a cable from the side, and does not need to be slid over from one end. This has the advantage that cables can be marked after installation and checking; but while the markers can be easily fitted they can just as easily be removed.
  • a more secure type of marker is a sleeve that is slid over the cable from one end before it is fitted. Commonly, it is then heat shrunk to grip tightly around the cable. This is not a wholly satisfactory process, being quite time-consuming and also leaving the marker immovable.
  • a cable marker comprising a closed loop which is at least partially of resilient material and having a portion which can be sprung between generally convex and concave configurations, the said -* portion when convex enabling a cable to be passed easily through it and when concave engaging the cable to clamp the loop thereto.
  • a second portion of the closed loop, opposite the first mentioned portion, is internally ° serrated or roughened to provide a positive grip on the cable.
  • This second portion may be curved to a radius substantially equivalent to that of the largest cable size to be accepted.
  • the first portion will generally be V-shaped, the V - • - being invertible. However, for a better engagement on the cable, the apex of the V may be shaped to be concave inwards, the radius of the depression preferably being substantially equivalent to that of the smallest cable size to be accepted.
  • Such cable markers will usually be of plastics material and may be made in strips or ribbons by injection moulding, each marker being detachable from the next by breaking off at a weak bridge. Each marker may carry just one symbol, usually a letter or numeral, 25 and the complete marking of a cable will be done by applying a series of such markers to make up a combination of letters and numerals. The markers may be provided with means for mutual inter-engagement and alignment on the cable.

Each part will carry a set of markers and each part, other than the one furthest from the head, will have at least one channel left free of markers, so that a marker from those parts not adjacent the head can be moved up to the head.

  • the invention is applicable to markers for elongate members other than electrical cables (for example pipes or tubes for fluids) and the closed loop member need not bear a visible mark. It might, for example, carry a sensor capable of indicating what was passing through the cable or pipe.
  • the closed loop member might be of metal, or at least have a metallic coating, and serve as part of a tag to make electrical contact with a conductor.
  • the closed loop may be split, conveniently at junction 7 as shown in Figure 10, to enable the member to be fitted laterally to a cable or pipe. While not so secure, when the V-formation is inverted, the free ends 22 of the sides 6 will act as barbs engaging the cable or pipe and make dislodgement more difficult than with a conventional C-shaped clip.
