Abstract

In a process for manufacturing pelletized materials for use in chemical reactions in industry or agriculture, powdered alkaline compounds are pelletized with hydroxides of substances with widely differing solubility products. In a first stage, a small quantity of pelletizing water is added to form seeds 0.05 to 0.15 mm in size which combine to form pellets on addition of more pelletizing water. The quantity of pelletizing water added to the material in this first stage is sufficient to hydrate it but not appreciably greater. After seed formation begins, no more water is added until the raw material is completely hydrated and thereafter only the quantity of pelletizing water necessary to continue seed formation is added. To manufacture pellets for removing nitrogenous impurities, together with phosphorous-containing impurities and possibly heavy metals, the active substances used are hydrogen phosphates or phosphates of a cation of the second maingroup and sub-groups of the periodic system.
