Description

of metal, or any rigid, tough, or hard Sub-` pressed' .UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.-
E. H. Moena, 0El BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.'
IMPRovEMi-:NT JN BooT-SVTRAPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.`41,087, dated January 5,1864; Reissue No. l,6 19, dated v February 16, 1864.
To all whom it may concern):
Be it known that I, F. H. MOORE, of Boston, in the county of Sublk and State of Massa 4chnsetts, have invented a new and useful Im- .p'rovementin Boot-Straps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear', and exact description of the same, reference being had t0 the accompanying drawings, making for theordina'ry woven or webbing and leather .l bont. straps. in common use..
' The object of the invention is to supersede the abovenamed straps by obtaining one that will be more durable, cheaper,'or capable of being applied at a -less cost, and which will possess the advantage of being manipulated with greaterfaeility than the ordinary vstraps in use. To enable those skilled in' theart to fully understandand construct my invention, I willproceed to describe it;
A represents' the strap, wlnch'is constructed stance which will possess a requisite degree of Strength. It is designedhowever, to construct thestrap of metal-heavy wire, for instance-bent so as to form a loop, a, at its npperend -of sufficient size to admit, say, of two fingers of the-hand passing through it, the lower part being formed of Straight parts b b,.parallelwith each other and united at their lower ends in semicircular form, as shownclearly by the dotted lines in'Fig. 2, a narrow space being allowed between the parts b-b.
This strap is attached to. the boot by two rivets, o c, which pass through the leatherl 'and the space between the parts bb -ot' the strap, the parts b b beingsufeiently long to admit-of afc/ertain degree of play of the strap 'sucient t'admit of the. loop a being drawn' npward'bove the boottop B, as shown in tint,fFig. 2'and also to admit of it being ovcniinside of theAboot-top, as shown in red toutline.;v
Thus it will be seen that when the loops a are grasped by the-operator for the purpose l rot' drawing onvthe boots therloops a will be drawn-up to admit ofthe fingers being passed through them, and when the boots are drawn .on .the feet the' loops may be pressed down `within the bootltop out'ot' the way.
In order to protect the ngersfthe loops a .are covered 'with leather, ex, or other soft or pliable.material. The straps are attached to' ordinary boots, one at each side, in the same, place as the ordinary flexible straps, and
' when applied to gaiters or low boots or shoes are. attached one to the back part, asshown in Fig. 1. l f
I do notcontine myself to any particular. .manner of. @instructies thetrans.- 'They may..
be made of wire bent in properform, or'they 'j may be castor cut out of platen: etal.- Neither do I confiuemyself to the sliding movement of the strap in order to adjust it down within or by the lsideof the boot-top so that it may be lout'of the way, for the straps may be atta( he l'to the boottop by means `oi' rivets or joints .so arranged as to admit of the straps,
after the boot is i drawn on the yfoot, being turned down either in 'a forward or backward 'I direction by the side of the boot-top or in an outwarddirection from'it. 4 j' l Y This strap 'does notproject asfar above the boot-topA-as the ordinary webbing 0`r 1eather ones, andv they rconsequently may be permanently attached to' the boot-top or arranged so as not'to slide or turn down', and still be a great improvement over the .flexible ones hitherto used.
Hav-ingthus described my invention, what l. claim as new, and desire to secure. by Letters r Patent, is. 1 r
- A strapfor boots and shoes, constructed of metal or other suitable rigid or tough material,` attached. either permanentlyto .the boot-top or in such a manner las to admit,after the boot or shoe is drawn fonthe foot, of heilig turned or shoved down within or -at the outer:
-s'ide of the boot-top, substantially as herein set forth. y
'.Witnesses: Fi H. MOORE.;
