BOOT AND snon.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 24, 1913.
Application filed February 13, 1912. Serial No. 677.389.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, l/VILHELM E1011, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, and residing at Essen-on-the-Ruhr, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a ventilatingdevice to be used in connection with boots and shoes, and the object of my invention is to ventilate the foot automatically while the person wearing such boots or shoes is walking.
In order to make my invention more clear, I refer to the accompanying drawing, in which similar letters denote similar parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure l is a bottom-view of a sole intended to be laid into a boot or shoe so as to be immediately below the foot, a portion of the bellows Z) being removed to show the spring 0. Fig. 2 is a side-view of the sole, Fig. 3 is a plan of the same, and Fig. l is a side-view of a boot provided with such a sole.
T o the lower side of the sole a is attached the bellows Z), which contains the spring 0. This spring tends constantly to expand the bellows. The air enters the bellows from the interior of the boot or shoe through an opening (Z provided in the upper portion of the wall of the bellows. This opening coincides with the rear end of a long slot extending lengthwise through the sole from the toe-portion to said aperture (Z.
9 are wire-cramps connecting the opposite rims of the sole at said slot with each other and forming a support for the foot above the said slot. The latter is practically closed by the foot on setting this latter on the ground. The bellows is then compressed, and the air contained and inclosed in it is forced out through a channel provided in a lug m forming a lateral elongation or" the sole. This channel commences atthe bellows and communicates with the interior of the same; it terminates at an aperture ll: provided in proper position laterally in the boot or shoe.
The connecting passage between is and 2' lies in the lateral lug m which is attached to the sole a, and which when inserted into such a boot or shoe, lies on the inside thereof against the opening is, in such a way that the end of the passage from which the air escapes, is situated directly opposite the opening 70, so that the air is compelled to escape from the bellows at 70 only. It is obvious of course that the lug m is so connected to the boot or shoe that the air can find no other passage except through 70. In order to prevent air from passing from the outside through the openings 70 and i into the bellows a non-return valve k is arranged in the conecting passage just over the opening 2', in such a manner that the air can pass from the bellows to h, but not reversely. The air is prevented from passing back through the opening cl through which it passed into the bellows, by the foot and stocking covering over the longitudinal slot f when the foot is put down as stated above.
Having now described my invention, what I desire to secure by a Patent of the United States is:
In a boot or shoe, the combination with the boot or shoe proper, of a sole adapted to be placed into the same; a bellows attached to the lower side of said solo; a spring located within said bellows and tending to expand the same; an air-connection between the interior of said bellows and the interior of the boot or shoe; an upwardly extending lug forming a lateral enlargement of the sole; an air-channel in said lug; another air-connection between the interior of the bellows and said chan nel; an air-connection between the latter and the outer surface of the boot or shoe, and a non-return valve located at the commencement of the said channel and opening in the direction to the aperture at the outer side of the boot or shoe.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 19th day of January 1912, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
VILHELM EICK.
