DESIGN FOR A SHAWL-FABRIC.

Specification forming part of Design No. 5,106, lated July l1, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l,.losi-.rn llonosox,otlhiladelphia, county ot' Philadelphia and State ot' Pennsylvania, have invented or produeed a Design fora Slrau'l-Fabriiz, ol' which the lollowing is aspecification:

My shawl-fabric possesses two main characteristies: 1st, the pattern, no matter how it be varied in its details, invariabl \v consists ot' stripes of repstabric following the direction of the warp, alt-ernated with strips of a plaid pattern on ordinary shawl-fabric. 2d, the pattern is illuminated with stripes ot' silk, which are restricted to the plaid portion of the design.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 illustrates a specimen ot' the shawl-fabric, and Fig. 2 another specimen.

In Fig. 1 the design consists ot' a series of stripes, A A, alternated with strips B l of a plaid pattern. Each stripe A consists ot' a collection of minor stripes, the number, size, and coloring of which may be varied at pleasure. It is a peculiar feature of my design that these stripes follow the direction of the warp-threads and are made in reps-fabric, while the strips B consist of shawl-fabric. The design of each strip B is formed by any combination ot' longitudinal and transverse stripes, forming a plaid pattern, in which are incorporated stripes ot' silk, the body of the fabric being composed of wool. 'lhns in Fig. l a a are the longitudinal stripes of silk, and b b the transverse stripes of the same material. It will be observed that while these silken stripes impart brilliancv to the plaid portion of the design they are discontinued where the stripes A of reps-fabric occur, this restriction ot the illuminating stripes being one ol' the features of my design. ln the modification, Fig. 2, the same general characteristics are observed, the minor stripes of which the stripes A are composed in this pattern di'ering in forni, color, and arrangement from those ot' the stripes A in Fig. 1. The plaid portion of the pattern in Fig. 2 also differs from that in Fig. l, but it is illu|uinated b v silken stripes x .if and y y, arranged as shown. Other varieties of stripes A and illuminated plaid-patterns B may be substituted for those shown without departing from the general characteristics of my design.

1. A design for a shawl-fabric, having stripes A A following the course ot' the warp, and altcrnated with strips B B of a plaid pattern, all substantially as set forth.

2. The plaid portion ofthe design, illuminated with stripes of silk on a woolen ground, as set forth.
