OSEPH W. PHINNEY, OF MEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN TYPE FOUNDEBS COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A COR- PORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
DESIGN FOR A Four 0F TvPiz.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 35,712, dated February 1 1, 190%. Application filed January 8.1902. Serial No. 88,864. Torin of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern.-
, Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. PHINNEY, of Medford, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Font of Type, of which the following is a specification.
This font consists of capitals, small letters, and Arabic numerals.
The general characteristic of my new design consists in curving the line which is or dinarily unshaded in those letters which have two vertical or approximately vertical lines and shading it somewhat at the bottom. The vertical outlines of the broad or shaded vertical line in all of the letters are also curved inwardly at the top and bottom, thus giving them a squeezed appearance, and are finished with a very fine serif.
For example, in the capital A the left-hand line, which is ordinarily unshaded, curves inwardly and spreads at its base, the shaded right-hand line having a corresponding curve near its base, where it also spreads slightly, the horizontal line in this letter having a point on its lower side. The vertical portions of capitals B, D, E, F, II, I, J, K, L, P, R, T, and of capital Y are slightly narrower at each end than at the middle of said letters, each vertical portion having the appearance of being pinched in slightly where it joins the serifs. The vertical fine line of the capital M and the tWo vertical lines of the capital N have the characteristics of the left-hand line of the letter A. The top and bottom horizontal lines of capital E and the horizontal top line of capital F, the bottom horizontal line of capital L, the cross-line of capital T, and the horizontal line of the capital Z spread inward slightly at their extremities. The 46 lower portion of the loop of capital P and capital R is joined to its vertical line somewhat below the middle of the letter. characteristic of the capital Q is a triangle, the broad portion of which extends below the line of the letter. The letters V and W have somewhat the characteristics of the letter A above referred tot'. 6., its unshaded line is curved inward and spreads somewhat at its extremity.
The vertical lines of the small letters have in general the characteristics of the capital letters. The dots for the smalli and j are triangles, one of the angles of which is turned toward the top of the letter. The loops of the small h, small m, small 11, and small u are irregular, each loop joining its vertical at an acute angle. The ascending portion of the small f is a curved fine line, terminating in a broad spreading portion the serif of which is nearly horizontal. The descending portion of small g is much the shape of a small c reversed. The extremities of the fine lines of small a, small e, small v, small W, small y, small 2, and of the numerals 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 9 spread somewhat and end in small serifs, the vertical lines of the numerals l and 4 having the irregular characteristics noted in describing the capitals. 1
What I claim as my invention is- The design for a font of type as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my name this 3d day of January, 1902.
JOSEPH WV. PHINNEY.
