l a* aw UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIAS li. ELLIOTT, OF YONKERS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO OTIS A. MYGATT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DESIGN FOR A LAMP SHADE OR GLOBE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 31,355, dated August 8, 1899. Application filed June 2l, 1899. Serial No. 721,389. Term of' patent '7 years.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that l, ELIAS L. ELL"1"L,aciti zen of the United States, residing at Yonkers, in the county of Viestehester and State oi New 5 York,` have invented a certain new and sseful Design for aLamp-Shade, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a new, useful, and
1o original shape or Configuration of an article of manufacture known as a lamp shade or globe and a new and original ornament or impression to he plaeed on or molded in said lamp shade or globe.
Figure i is a perspective View of a shade or globe, (so oalled in the trade) iilusirating the design so far as it may he done by a linedrawing. Fig. i isahorizontal section oi' the wall of the shade on line 2 2 of Fig. i. Fig. zo 53 is a vertical sentieri of the wall of the shade on any vertical line, as line 3 3 of Fig. i,
The shade is composed of glass which will readily transmit light.
' ihe general contour of the shade is as shown in the drawings.
The outer surface oii the shade has hori- Ion tal` prisms or ribs project-ing; f rom the geueral surface of the glass, and the inner surface of the shade has vertical ribs, all those 3o ribs being;r integral with the glass and being produced (as the shades are now constructed) by moiding when the glass is in plastic oonditiou. 'lhe ribs on the inner surfaoeo' the glass are visible through the trausparon t me diuin, and without close examination might be supposed to be ou the outer suri'ai'ae oli the glass. The efieot of the vertical and herr/.oir tal riiis and prisms, the horizontal ribs proent angles and under dii-ferent lights.
jeeting ontwardiy and the vertical ribs projecting inwardly from the general thickness 4o of the glass, gives to the glass the appearance of beim.;r made up of small individual crystals er beads arranged' in regular horizontal and vertical rows.
A shade made of transparent glass properly ribbed in the manner described has the property of rendering objects within it practically invisible, While transmitting in a diffused forni substantially all the iight failing upon it-that is, the shade appears translucent al- 5o though the glass is transparent, the refraction of the light rays by the inclined surfaces preventing a direct transmission of sneh rays and giving an opaleseent or irideseent appearance to the shade when seen from dier- Such a shade when applied in proper manner to an artificial light of any kind is not only pleasing to the eye but has the effect of softening the light, thereby rendering the light more 6o pleasing also. The form of the globe, as shown, is nearly that of `a hemisphere open at the bottoni and having an annular bead or rim surrounding such opening' and having the broad open top ornamenied with a series ol bead-like projections.
lVhat l Claim isim The design for a lamp shade or globe as herein shown and described.
in testimony whereof l ailix my signature 7o in pros-onen oi' two witnesses.
