LAMP SHADE.
(Applicltiun flied 31, 1900.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIAS L. ELLIOTT, OF NEW YORK, N.
DESIGN FOR A LAMP-SHADE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 32,286, dated. February 27, 1900. Application filed January 31, 1900. Serial No- 3,524. Term of patent 7 years.
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, ELIAS L. ELLIOTT, acitizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New Yo rk,have invented a certain newand useful Design fora Lamp-Shade, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a new, useful, and original shape or configuration of an article of manufacture known as a lamp shade or globe and a new and original ornament or impression to be placed on or molded in said lamp shade or globe.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lamp shade or globe, (so called in the trade,) illustrating the design so far as may be done bya line-drawing. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the wall of the shade on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the wall of the shade on any vertical line, as the line 3 3, Fig. 1.
The shade is composed of glass, which will readily transmit light.
The general contour of the shade is as shown in the drawings.
The outer surface of the shade has horizontal prisms or ribs projecting from the general surface of the glass, and the inner sur face of the shade has vertical ribs, all these ribs being integral with the glass and being produced (as the shades are now constructed) by molding when the glass is in plastic condition. The ribs on the inner surface of the glass are visible through the transparent medium and without close examination might be supposed to be on the outer-surface of the glass. The effect of the vertical and horizontal ribs or prisms, the horizontal ribs pro-- jecting outwardly and the vertical ribs projecting inwardly from the general thickness of the glass, gives to the glass the appearance of being made of small individual crystals or beads arranged in regular horizontal and vertical rows.
A shade made of transparent glass properly ribbed in the manner described has the property of rendering objects within it practically invisible, while transmitting in a different form substantially all the light falling upon itthat is, the shade appears translucent, although the glass is transparent, the refraction of the light-rays by the inclined surfaces preventing a direct transmission of such rays and giving an opalescent oriridescent appearance to the shade when seen from different angles and under different lights. Such a shade when applied in proper manner to an artificial light of any kind is not only pleasing to the eye, but has the effect of softening the light, thereby rendering thelight more pleasing also.
hat I claim is- The design for a lamp-shade as herein described and shown.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
