LAMP SHADE.
A iimmn filed June 21, 1599.
(52 wyum" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIAS L. ELLIOTT, or YONKERS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO OTIS A. MYGATT, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
DESIGN FOR A SPECIFICATION forming part of Desigrl No.- 31,353, datd. August 8, 1899; Application filed June 21, 1899. ilerlal H0. 721,390. Term of patent '7 years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatl, ELIAS L. ELLIOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yonkers, in the county of Nestchester and State of New l York, have invented a certain new and nseful Design for a LampShade, of which the fol lowing is a specification, reference being had i therein to the accompanying drawings;
This invention relates to a new, useful, and
original shape or configuration of an article of manufacture known as a lamp shade or globe and a new and original ornament or impression to be placed on or molded in said i lamp shade or globe.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lamp shade or globe, (so called in the trade,) illustrating the design so far as it may be done by a line-drawin g. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the Wall of the shade on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
2o Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the wall ot the shade on any vertical line, as line 3 3, Fig. 1.
The shade is composed of glass which will readily transmit light.
The general contour of the shade is sub '25 stantially What is known as barrel shape, one edge, as shown, being ornamented with beadwork and the other edge or end having a slightiy-projecting rim as shown in the drawings.
0 The outer surface of the shade has horizontal prisms or ribs projecting from the gem oral surface of the glass, and the inner surface of the shade has vertical ribs, all these ribs being integral with the glass and being i 5 produced (as the shades are now constructed} by molding when the glass is in plastic con-- dition. lhe ribs on the inner surface oi. the
glass are visible through the transparent me dium and without close examination might be supposed to be on the outer surface of the 0 glass. The efiect of the vertical and hori zontal ribs and prisms; the horizontal ribs projecting outwardly and the vertical ribs projecting inwardly from the general thickness of the glass, gives to the glass the ap pearance of being made up of small individual crystals or beads arranged in regular horizontal and vertical rows.
A shade made of transparent glass properly ribbed in the manner described has the property of rendering objects within it practically invisible, while transmitting in a diffused form substantially all the light falling upon it-that is, the shade appears translucent, although the glass is transparent, the refraction of the light-rays by the inclined surfaces preventing a direct transmission of such rays and giving an opalescent or iri descent appearance to the shade when seen from diiierent angles and under different lights. Such a shade when applied in proper manner to an artificial light of any kind is not only pleasing to the eye, but has the effect of softening the light, thereby rendering the light more pleasing also.
hat I claim is- The design for a lamp-shade as herein de scribed and shown.
in testimony whereof I allix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
