UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIAS L. ELLIOTT, or YONKERS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO OTIS A. MYGATT, or NEW YORK, n. Y.
DESIGN FOR A LAMP SHADE OR GLOBE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 31,359, dated August 8, 1899.
Application filed June 21, 1899, Serial No. 721,395. Term of patent 7 years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIAS L. ELLIOTT, a citii zen of,the United States, residing at Yonkers, in the county of l'vestchester and State of New York, have invented a. certain new and useful Design fora Lamp-Shade, of which the following is a specification, reference heing had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a new, useful, and re original shape or configuration of an article of manufacture known as a lamp shade or globe and a new and original ornament or impression to he placed on or molded in said lam p shade or globe.
shade or globe, so called in the trade,) illns- E trating the design so far as may be done by a line-drawing. Fig. 2 is a l'lorizontal section of the wall of the shade on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the Wall of the shade on any vertical line, as line 8 3, Fig. 1.
The shade is composed of glass which will readily transmit light.
The general contour of the shade is what is known as straight bell shape or conical hell shape, the outline being nearly that of a frnstum of a cone for aconsiderahle dis tance from the larger end, which has a bead work edge. The smaller end is drawn in on 0 a slight curve and has a plain rinu as shown 5 in the drawings.
The outer surface of the shade has horizom tal prisms or ribs projecting from the general surface of the glass and the inner surface of the shade has vertical ribs, all these ribs being integral with the glass and being produced as the shades are new constructed) by molding when the glass is in plastic condh Figure 1 is a perspective View of a. lamp 1 tion. The ribs on the inner surface of the glass are visible through the transparent mediuiu and without close examination might i be supposed to be on the outersurface of the 1 glass. The effect of the vertical and horizoni tal ribs and prisms, the horizontal ribs projecting outwardly and the vertical ribs projecting inwardly from the general thickness of the glass, gives to the glass the appearance of being made up of small individual crystals or heads arranged in regular horizontal and vertical rows.
A shade made of transparent glass properly ribbed in the manner described has the property of rendering objects Within it practically invisihlenvhile transmitting in a diffused form substantiallyall the light falling u pen itthat is, the shade appears translucent, although the glass is transparent-the refraction of the light-rays by the inclined surfaces preventing a direct transmission of such rays and giving an opalesecnt or iridescent appearance to the shade when seen from difli'erent angles and under different lights. Such a. shade when applied in proper manner to an artificial light. of any kind is not only pleasing to the-eye, but has the effect of softening the light, thereby rendering the light more pleasing also.
\Vhat I claim is The design for a lamp shade or globe, as herein described and SilUWil.
in testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
