ELIAS L. ELLIOTT, OF YONKERS, NEW YORK, AssI'eN on are OTIS A. MYGATT, or new YORK, n. Y.
DESIGN FOR A Application filed ne 21, 1899.
To all whom it may (Oil/(Writ: i
Be it known that I, ELIAS L. ELLlo'r'r, a eiti zen of the United States, residing atYonkers, inthe county of Westchester and State ofNew i York, have invented a certain new and useful Design for a Lamp-Shade,of which the folj lowing is aspecification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings This invention relates to a new, useful, and
original shape or configuration of an article of manufacture known as a lamp shade or globe and a new and original ornament or impression to be placed on or molded in said lamp shade or globe,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lamp shade or globe, (so called in the trade,) illnstrating the design so far as it may be done by a line-drawing. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the wall of the shade on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the wall of the shade on any vertical line, as line 3 3 of Fig". l.
The shade is composed of glass which will readily transmit light.
The general contonrot the shade as shown in the drawings.
The outer snrface'of the shade has horizontal prisins or ribs projecting from the general surface of the glass and the inner surface of the shade has vertical. ribs, all these being intcg'ral with the glass and being produced (as the shades are new constructed) by welding when the glass is in plastic condition. The ribs on the inner-surface oi the glass are visililc tl'irough the transparent lllliil i u in and with out close examination might be supposed to i he on tlmontcr snrf'accol the glass. The cl? l'ect oi the vertical and horizontal ribs and prisms, the horizontal riiis projecting ontent angles and under dilleren t lights. a shade when applied in proper manner to an artificial light of any kind is not only pleasing to the eye, but has the effect of softening LAMP-SHADE.

wardly and the Vertical ribs projecting in wardly from the general thickness of the glass, 40 gives to the glass the appearance of being made up of small individual crystals or beads arranged in regular horizontal and vertical rows.
A shadeniadeof transparentglass properly ribbed in the manner described has the prop erty of rendering objects within it practically invisible, while transmitting in a diffused form substantially all the light falling upon it--that is, the shade appears translucent, al-
though the glass is transparent, the refrae tion oi the light-rays by theinclined surfaces preventing a direct transmission of such rays :and giving an opalesccnt or iridescent appearance to the shade when seen from differ- Such the light, thereby rendering the light more pleasing also.
The shade, as shown, is on the general. form or shape known as bell shape, the smaller end being open and the larger end being or namented by a series cl? scallops, the edges oi. such scallops being again ornmnented by a series of head-like projections.
W hat I claim is .lhe design for a lamp-slack. as herein ilescribcd and slum n.
in testimony whereof i allix my signature in presence ol two witnesses.
