UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
RUDOLPH A. \VI'PIEMANN, OF NElV YORK, N. Y.
DESIGN FOR A COUPON FOR LABELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 26,916, dated April 13, 1897.
A li ti fil d January 16, 1897. Serial No. 619,486. Term of patent 7 years.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH A. \VITTE- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Coupons for Labels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to designs for egg pens for attachment to ordiuayylabcls to be appliedfosliiififiigdimefpackages to adapt the label to be defaced by removing the coupon, the coupon and label or both havin g printed or otherwise formed thereon suitable words, iigures, marks, or characters to serve as identifying-marks or to denote the contents of the package, give directions for use, &c.
The design consists essentially of a co upon device having its main body portion approximately of the shape or configuration of a bell at the top of which islormed a semicircular iiidandiieck portion or flap which extends beyond the edge of the label to which the coupon is affixed, the said body portion being provided with an ornamental or fanciful border which encircles a suitably-colored background on which the desired words, characters, identifying-marks, &c., may be printed, stamped, or otherwise formed.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents in side elevation a coupon embodying my design as applied to the back of an ordinary label. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line II II of Fig. 1.
111 the drawings, A denotes the main body portion of the design allixed to a label C, and which is approximately of the shape or configuration of a bell, but with a somewhat more elongated upper portion, the latter terminatin g in a head portion B, which is substantially semicircular in shape and forms a flap or extension of the coupon above the edge of the label C, to the back of which it is affixed. The main body portion A is provided with a suitably-colored background, as at a, which lies within and is encircled by a fanciful border or scalloped and dotted marginal lines a" within the marginal line forming the outer edge of the body of the coupon.
(t denotes a transverse portion in the shape of an ornamental cross-bar overlyingadollarmark on the background and which may serve as an ornamental or identifying mark for the coupon, and a denotes another transverselyarranged portion or bar which extends in a gradual curve across the background a, and which may be left blank or have ornamental or other identifying marks or Writing thereon, as may be desired. Other marks, characters, writing, or printing may be placed on the plain or colored background a within the border-lines of the design, and the head and neck portion B may also have any suitable words, characters, marks, orwritinginscribed or otherwise formed thereon, without changing the general character of the design, the leading features of which reside in the approximately bell-shaped body portion of the article, having an artistic margin or border and a substantially semicircular head projecting above its shoulders or the top of said main body portion, and a suitably-colored background lying within and encircled by said fanciful border, such background comprising the major portion of the body of the article and having the same general shape or configuration as said body portion. The coupon may be made of cloth or other strong material.
Having thus described my design, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The design for a coupon for labels, substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
