DESIGN FOR A FONT OF PRINTING-TYPE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 25,524, dated May 19, 1896.

Application filed April 13, 1896. Serial No- 587,41l. Term of patent 7 years.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, BERNE NADALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented and produced a certain new and original Design for a Font of Text-Type, Which is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof.

This design comprises lower-case letters, capitals, Arabic numerals, dollar-mark, character &, points, and paragraphing ornament.

The style is medizeval text. It is quite extended, void of angles and hair-lines. It is profusely characterized by terminals and appendages, consisting of a dot 0r knob developed laterally at the end of the stroke to which it pertains and constituting a slight hook. This feature takes the place of serifs and transverse finishing-lines on all stems, and it is furthermore appended Wherever the form of the letter permits Without disguising The only letters or characters which are Without this feature are lower-case 0, capital 0, and figure 8. Another characteristic is a heavy lobe formed on one side of certain strokes, as the tail of lower-case and capital K, the foot-stroke of figure 2, the crossstroke of figure 4, the head-stroke of figure 5, the left-hand stem of lower-case and capital V, tail of capital R, and the tail of capital Y. Certain strokes have a characteristic which is intermediate in formation between the dot or knob terminal first above mentioned, prevalent throughout the design and the last-mentioned so-called lobe. This feature is an appendage in positions Where the space does not permit a development great enough to become the lobe and Where the formation of the letter affords no excuse for; the dot or knob as, for example, at the lower left-hand side of the oval element of figure 5, Where a drooping knob extends to the line, and at a similar position in figure 9,Where a similar formation is observed. The same thing is observable at the left hand of the upper oval element of figures 2 and 3 and of the lower element of figure 3. The prevalent tendency to blossom out into dots or knobs will be observed also at the upper end of the lobe on the left-hand stem of capital V, Where a heavy dot appears detached. Lower-case c and e are closed at the left, and capital Y has its right-hand stroke reversed at the upper end. Lower-case v, W, and X are closed by abnormal strokes at the upper end, and lower-case X is similarly closed at the loWer end. Capital E is formed with the same peculiarity remarked with respect to lower-case e, and the finishing terminal of the cap-stroke of both 6 lower-case and capital F is produced downward until it joins the characteristic crossstroke, closing the letter and inclosing the counter. The finishing-stroke of capital L is joined to the stem by an abnormal line, producing an inclosed counter. Capitals V,WV, X, and Y are characterized by similar abnormal lines, closing the letters and producing inclosed counters. The purpose and effect of all these abnormal lines and of the rever- 7o sion of the right-hand stem of lower-case yare to give a blind or blindfolded appearance to the letter.
