Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEo JOHN L. POPE, OF OLEVELAND, OHIO.
DESIGN FOR A CARRIAGE-STEP.
SPECIFICA'I'ION formng part of Design No. 13,416, dated November 14, 1882.
Application filed August; 2, 1882. Tcrm of patent 14 years.
To ali whom it may concern b Be it known that I, JOHN L. PoPE, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Carriage-Steps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying photographic illustratiou, formiug part thereof.
My invention relatcs to a new1 design for carriage-steps; and it consists in providing the upper surface of the step with ribbed work in the form of semcircles and ellipses and thereby producing a handsome and striking appearance.
In the accompanying photograph, a a a' a' are four semicircular ribs, which run from near either corner of the step, and, crossing each other at about the center of the latter, terminate at the opposite corner. These four semicircular or arch-like ribs, laid out as they are, form four elliptically-shaped figures, a o' a a', &c., inclining toward tlie center of plate from the coruers of the latter. Formed of raised work, integral with the arch-like rihs and disposed in an opposite direction from the elliptical-shaped figures a a' a a', &c., made thereby, are four more figures elliptical in Outline, which I have designated hy the letters b b b b, and which, as will be seen, run diagonally of the plate. he general effect of the ornamentation is the appearance to the eye of two crossed ellipses at each corner of the plate and one large ribbed ring running allaronnd the plate and touching at four points, c, of the inner edges of the sidcs thereof.
The angles formed by the various described figures and now shown in the form of openwork may he closed up in the casting of the plate, and yet the raised work of the ornamentation still produce my novel design.
What I claim as new, and desire to Secure by Letters Patent, is-
The design for a carriagc-step,consisting of raised semicircular and elliptical-shaped tigures, disposed substantially as shown.
DIn testiinony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 3lst day of May, 1832.
JOHN L. POPE.
In presence of- A. A. PoPE, O. M. UoPP.
