Specification forming part of Design No. l0,898, dated November 12, 1878; application filed September 30, 1878. [Tenn of patent 14 yearn] To all 'whom it may concern:
Beit known that I` PAUL GREY, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have originated and designed a. new Design or Pattern for a Fout of Ornamental Printing Types, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my design is clearly shown in the accompanying typographie impression, to which reference is made.
The leading generic feature of the design consists in the arched top given to the individ nal characters. This feature is most clearly discernible in the letters H and M of .the design. This feature is followed out in allot' the charaeters'nppr andlower caseletters, pointsr and figures.
The next gen eric feature is the hair-line drop and dot at the lower left hand of each letter wherever possible. This is shown at the letter B quite clearly, and it will be seen to con-` sist of adropping line from the lower left-hand corner ot' the letter, terminating in a dot. In some of the characters, as in O and U, this feature is, Perforce, omitted, and in others it is found at the other` side alone, or is repeated.
The next generic feature is the hair-line scroll or looped ornamentation at the left and in the interior ofthe letter.
The body of the letters are, so far as t-he'peeuliarities of the design will permit., of the Roman style, light upstrokes and heavy down. strokes.
A further peculiarity consists in the hairline drop from the center of the letter to helow the base-line, terminating in a curl and dot, the curl turning to the right.
' I claim- 1. The design or pattern for a font of ornamental types, as shown and described.
2. The design for types wherein the characters are given at the top an arched appear-` ance, substantially as specified.
3. The arched-wp characters having n hairline drop and dot, substantially as specified.
4. The arched-v top characters having the hair-line ornamentation at the left and within thev character, substantially as specified.
