Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM S. HICKS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DESIGN FOR PENCIL-CASES.
specification forming part of Design No. [0,260, dated September 25, 1877; application filed August '28, 1877. [Term of Patent 3} years] To ail whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. HICKS, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and ornamental Design for Pencil-Gases,ofsyhich the following is a specification My invention consists in a new and ornamental form or design for the. body of an extension-pencil; and consists in giving the same the iorm of an acorn, as represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents the pencil as it appears in its closed condition; and Fig. 2, the pencil as it appears when extended.
A represents the body or case in which the mechanism, of any suitable character, is mounted and concealed. As shown, the body is made in imitation of an acorn, and when the pencil is closed or shortened, so that all the working parts are concealed in the body, it presents merely the appearance of a small fancy acorn, attractive and pleasing in appearance, and specially adapted to be worn as a charm or ornament on the watch-guard. The lower end of the body may have a small annular neck, at, around the opening, through which the'pencil-point is protruded; but said neck forms no essential part of the design. At its upper end the pencil has a neck and ring, I); but the form of the ring may be changed, or any other form of suspending de vice substituted.
Ordinarily I make the body of gold, silver, or other metal, roughening that portion which represents the cup or burr, and burnishing the remainder; but the material may be changed, and the entire exterior surface left entirely plain, or ornamented in any manner that fancy may dictate.
While I have described the design as in tended tor pencileases, it is obvious that the cases may be used for button-hooks, toothpicks, &c., made extensible in the same manner as pencils.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. The design consisting of an imitation acorn, and a central tube or case projecting therefrom.
2. The design for a case for extensible penoils, and similar articles, consisting in an imitation acorn and the suspending-ring at the top, substantially as shown.
WILLIAM S. HICKS.
