Be it known that I, HENRY JAMES GORE, citizen of Great Britain, residing at London, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Type-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved chase or holder for type and it has forv its object to provide a simple and efficient device for the purpose specilied and which is designed more particularly for use in addressing machines. i

In order that the invention may be the better understood, drawings are appended in which z Figure l is a plan of the upper side of a holder constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of the underside with a portion of the holder removed. Fig. 3 is an end View of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is an end view of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a plan of the removable member and the holder. Fig. 6 is an end View of said member. Fig. 7 is a sectional view of part of the holder to a larger scale. Fig. S is a perspective view of one end of the holder with the inner member partly withdrawn. Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the other end of the holder.

Referring to the appended drawings, a indicates the body of the holder which is formed of sheet metal and is provided with a number of longitudinal slots b adapted to form typeways and in which the type, which is of H section is slid. The slots ZJ aforesaid at one end are open and at that point they are enlarged to facilitate the introduction and removal of the type, indicated by A in Fig. 9. The metal forming the body of the holder is at one end turned or bent backward beneath the outer plate as indicated at c, the said portion being disposed beneath the enlarged extremities of the slots Z; and being disposed sufliciently below the plane of the said outer plate to offer no impediment to the introduction of the type. The sides of the body of the holder are formed integral with the said body, are bent or shaped as shown so that they form guides (Z adapted to ret-ain a piece of sheet metal or other suitable material e which may be slid in beneath the base of the type, and a projection f having inwardly turned longitudinal members whereby when stacked one upon the other the face of the type of one carrier does not come into contact with a card g in another. The platen e has stamped or otherwise formed upon it spring projections el at each end, which projections when the plate is in position, bear against the under surface of the body of the holder and secure the plate with suiicient rmness to prevent its accidental displacement. The plate e at the point f1 is indented or otherwise treated to afford a hold for the nger nail whereby it may be readily withdrawn when required. The plate e forms a backing for the type and adds to the stabilit-y of the holder so that the body of the holder does not yield when pressure is placed upon it during the printing operation. The sides of the plate are turned or bent backward as shown at g thereby forming guides designed to receive and retain a sheet of card or any other material g1 which may have printed or written upon it the address or the like set up in the holder. By this means a particular address may be readily picked out or identified. In order to limit the extent of movement of the card, I may provide at one end small projections It against which the end of the card abuts.

Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the Same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is l. A type hold-er having a body formed from one piece of metal, slots in said body, one end of which extends to the end of said body and beneath which ends is a transverse member formed by turning back an extension of the body, a backing plate designed to be slid into position at the back of the type and retained in guides formed by bending the sides of the body to embrace said plate and tongues upon the plate adapted to press against the underside of the body of the holder.

2. A type holder having a body formed from one piece of metal, slots in said body,

one end of which extends to the end of said body and ,beneath which ends is a transverse member formed by turning back an extension of the body, a backing plate designed to be slid into position at the back of the type and retained in guides formed by bending the sides of the body to embrace said plate and tongues upon the plate adapted to press against the underside of the body of the holder and a slide upon the underside of the backing plate formed by turning back the longitudinal edges of the plate and which guide is adapted to receive a card bearing particulars of the matter set up in the holder'.

A type holder having a body formed from one piece otl metal, slots in said body, one end ot' Which extends to the end of said body and beneath which ends is a 'transverse member formed by turning back an extension of the body, n bucking plate designed to be slid into position at the back of the type and retained in guides formed by bending the sides of the body to embrace said plate and tongues upon the plate adapted to press against the underside of the backing plate formed by turning back the longitudiiml edges oi the plate and which guide is adapted to receive a card bearingl particulars of the matter set up' in the holder and means for supporting the holders one upon another clear of said card and 'formed by bending` extensions on the guides for the backing plate so as to form inwardly turned projections.
