My invention re ates tol devices `for storing, holding or retaining hand stamps, ents, casts, moulds or other stamping, engravinpv or printinglg` devices, and more l1iarticularly for holdingr hand stamping devices having` rubber type, and which are inked by contact witha pad saturated with ink.
My invention comprises a novel, unique and com act holder and inking device.
One o the objects of my invention is to provide a device in which a plurality ot stamps 'or other devices are stored, retained or carried.
Another object of my invention is to provide a receptacle for holding rubber stamps having an inking device.
Another object of my invention is to pro vde a combined stamp holder and pad in which the Stamps andthe pad will be protected from injury and from dirt or dust.

With these and other objects in view to be more fully set forth hereinafter, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination of elements,` and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described in the specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings considered together or separately.
The inventive idea involved is capable of' receiving a variety of mechanical expres` sions, some of which, for the purpose of ilinsti-ating the invention, are 'shown in the accompanying drawings.
The' invention will be first described in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and then more specifically defined and indicated in the appended claims.

In4 carrying out my invention, I provide in one form of my invention a rectangular container, box or receptacle l open at the top and having the upper edges of the walls thereof rabbetted to receive a top or cover 2. The rabbets are formed by means of a frame 3 open at the top and bottom thereof.' and secured within the box l with the walls of the trame projecting above the side ot the box l, The frame 3 does not extend to the bottom of the box 1 thus forming a pocket 4 in the lower portion 'ot' the box, One of the end walls of' the box is cut away, as at 5 whereby the pocket et will be accessible from outside of the box,
The frame 3 is provided with transverse 7 whereby end members 6 and with a plurality of spaced, intermediate transverse partitions a plurality of pockets 8 are vformed in the frame. The partitions 7 are preferably the same depth as the walls of the frame, as shown. Each of the end members 6 and partitions is preferably concaved on its upper edge as shown at 9.
Slidably mounted in the pocket t is a tray or drawer 10, the front wall 11 of which is flush with the end wall of the box 1 having the opening 5, whereby said opening will be closed when the tray is in position. Within the tray 10 is a pad 12 such as is ordinai-ily used for inking rubber stamps. The tray 10 is provided with a handle 10,
As shown in Figures 2 and 3 the side and end rails of the tray project above the surface of the pad, While in the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figure 5, the said rails are flush .with the top surface of the pad.
Each of the pockets 8 is adapted to receive a stamping device comprising a handle 13 and a type surface 14. The. handles are of a length sufficient to fit more or less closely the transverse dimensions of the pockets. The upper portions 15 of the handles are more or less cylindrical longitudinally of the handles and of somewhat greater width than the bodies, whereby the edges 15 will properly t the longitudinal dimensions of the pockets and prevent rattling of the stamping device in the pockets, and the said members are so proportioned as to permit the type surface to come in contact with the pad but not to rest heavily thereon, this being accomplished by making the members of sufficient width so that the point a will rest on top edge of one partition and the point will rest on top edge of the adjacent partition. The upper portion 15 of each handle is provided with a iiattened surface 16 on whichowill be impressed a legend corresponding to the type 14 of that particular handle.
The conca'vities of the rails 6 and pari A' titions 7 will permit the fingers of the operator to reach .beneath the enlargements 15 whereby the stamps may be readily removed from the pockets.
Then the stamps are positioned in the l l rack as shown, the type surfaces will lightly rest upon the surface of the pad and the type will always be inked. y
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figure 2, the rear end rail of the pad tray 10 will prevent the withdrawal of the tray while the stamps are in position. When it is desired to withdraw the tray from the box to renew the ink on the pad, all of the stamps must be removed from the pockets.
"When it is desired to withdraw the tray partially from the boX whereby the stamp in use may be reinked` without placing it in a pocket in the box, the stamp farthest from the opening 15 is removed from its pocket, and the tray may then be withdrawn until it is varrested by the engagement of the rear rail thereof with the stamp in the next pocket.
As shown in Figure 5 the top of the pad is flush with the rails of the tray, and with this construction the tray may be withdrawn from the box without removing the stamps.
As shown in Figure 3 a leaf sprin 17 may be positioned in one or both ends o the pockets whereby the stamps will be retained in position within the pockets, even should the boX be inverted; the stamps being held in position by frictional engagement' with the springs, and asis obvious, the stamps may be in contact or outof contact with pad, as desired.

This method of retaining the stamps can be utilized with the holder provided With the ink pad as shown in Figure` 1, but with the rubber or resilient side walls the stamps can be, asis obvious, so positioned as to be out of contact with the pad.. If desired, the stand and stamps can be 'so arranged 'and constructed that a particular stamp must always be inserted in the same pocket and can Yonly be inserted in said pocket, with the identication mark facing in the proper di rection. One Way of accomplishing the forev going is to provide the frame 3 with sockets or recesses and the stamps with corresponding projections to rest or t in said sockets or recesses. Said sockets and projections being so constructed, arranged and positioned, that they differ positionally foreach pocket and stamp, t-hereby making it impossible to replace a stamp except in the proper pocket facing in the desired position.
It is obvious in view of the foregoing that I have devised a very unique, compact, serviceable and durable device, in which the rubber stamps are so arranged and constructed as to be always held in proper position, ready for use, and having indicating means which Will indicate the characters corresponding to the type on the rubber stamp, such indicating means beingy so affixed to the rubber stamp that they must always face the person Who is to use the stamp, thereby obviating the necessity of ypicking out the various stamps and looking at kthe rubber type to see what particular stamp is desired.
Vhile I have illustrated and described my invention in connection With a rubber stamp, I Wish it understood that my invention is not so limited, as I use herein kthe term rubber stamps in the generic sense as defining any kind of means for accomplishing the desired results.
The operation of the device is obvious from the foregoing description.
In accordance With the provisions of the patent statute, I have described the principle of my invention together with the ap paratus Which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire it understood that my invention is not confined to the particular form of apparatus herein shown and described, the same being merely illustrative, and that the invention can be carried out in other Ways Without departing from the spirit of my invention, and, therefore, I claim broadly the right to employ all equivalent instrumentalities coming Within the scope of the appended claims, and by means of which objects of my invention are attained, and the new results accomplished, as herein set forth, as it is obvious that the particular embodiments herein shown and described are only some of many that can be employed to attain these objects and accomplish these results.
Having now described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters .Patent is as follows:
l. In a device of the character described, comprising a receptacle adapted to receive a member having a type surface and a sliding member carried by said receptacle, said receptacle being adapted to support said member independently of but in contact With said sliding member.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a receptacle having compartments each adapted to receive and support a member having a type surface and resilient means for retaining said member in position. 3. A device of the character described, comprising a receptacle having compartments each adapted to receive and support a member having a type surface and spring members for retaining said member in position.

In a device of the character described, a receptacle having a plurality of partitions, and a member having a type surface, said member having an enlarged upper portion adapted to engage adjacent partitions to support the member thereon, said partitions having cut-out portions to permit grasping said member beneath said enlarged portion.
9. In a device of the character described, a receptacle having` a plurality o-f upstanding partitions and having an inking surface in the bottom thereof, and a member having a type surface, said member having an enlarged portion adapted to engage adjacent partitions to support said member thereon with the type surface in contact With said inlring surface.

In a device of the character described, a receptacle having a plurality of upstanding` partitions and having an inking surface in the bottom thereof, and a member having a type surface, said member having an enlarged upper portion adapted to engage adjacent partitions to support said member thereon with the type surface in Contact with said inking surface.
