UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIoET.
SAMUEL KATZ, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BUCKLE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL KATZ, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to a class of buckles adapted more particularly to be applied to a pair of trousers for adjusting the size of the waist thereof.
My invention has for its object primarily to provide a buckle for use especially at the waist of a pair of trousers whereby the wearer thereof may readily adjust the size of the waistband to meet his preference and which is adapted to be readily applied to the trousers without requiring the buckle to be stitched thereto as incident to buckles in ordinary use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a compact, inexpensive and efficient form of buckle having means which permits the buckle to be attached direct to the fabric of the trousers instead of to the usual strap, thus saving the consumption of material and labor, and which will allow the buckle to be conveniently detached from the trousers and re-fastened thereon for proper adjustment of the waist band thereof.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and will then be pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective View of one form of buckle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section through the buckle. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a clamp used in conjunction with the buckle, and Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the buckle with the clamp removed therefrom.
The buckle 10 has a frame 11 which is substantially rectangular in shape and may be of any desired size.- The frame 11 has two side bars 12, 13 and end bars 14, 15. The end bar 15 may be curved, as at 16, 16 and 16*, and upon one edge of the bar at the juncture of each of said curves is formed a tooth or prong 17 and 18. Disposed crosswise of the frame 11, and in proximity to the end bar 15, is a bar 19 which has its Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 24, 1911.
Patented July 18, 1911.- Serial No. 604,363.
ends formed integral with the side bars 12 and 13 and upon one edge of the bar 19 is a curved tooth 20.
To permit the buckle to be detachably fastened to a pair of trousers upon the frame 11 is provided a pin or pointed tongue 21 which has one end thereof formed upon the side bar 13 of said frame. The pin or tongue 21 is disposed transversely of the side bars 12 and l3 of the frame 11 substantially midway between the end bars 14 and 15 and said pin has a slot or groove 22 formed therein. Upon each of the side bars 12 and 13 of the frame 11 and adjacent to the ends of the pin or pointed tongue 21 is a lug 23 and 24 having an opening therethrough for passage of pins 25 and 26'by which a clasp 27 is hinged to the frame 11. The clasp 27 has a bent bar 28 upon one edge of which is provided a curved lug 29.
adapted to be gripped by the fingers of a person for opening or closing said clasp upon the frame 11, and in the lug 29 is an opening 30 into which the curved tooth 20 of the cross-bar 19 is directed when the clasp 27 is closed upon the frame 11. Upon the opposite edge of the bent bar 28 is formed a plurality of teeth, as 31, which are disposed so as to engage the slot or groove 22 of the pin 21 when the clasp is closed upon the frame 11.
In applying my buckle to a pair of trousers the pin 21 of the frame 11 is passed through the fabric of the trousers at the desired part of the waistband thereof, thus dispensing with the necessity of sewing the buckle to the fabric or to a special strap usually provided for this purpose. The clasp 27 is then closed down toward-the frame 11 of the buckle and the pin 21 is held to the fabric of the trousers by the teeth 31 of the bent bar 28 being pressed upon the fabric which is forced thereby into the groove or slot 22 of the pin 21, and to hold the clasp 27 in locked engagement the opening 30 of the lug 29 is passed over the curved-tooth 20 of the cross-bar 19. When the buckle is thus attached to the trousers the strap which is ordinarily employed to tighten the waistband thereof is guided under the end bar 15, then passed over the clasp 27 and is directed under the end bar 14; of the frame 11.
In the foregoing description I have embodied the preferred form of my invention, but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope thereof as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A buckle of the character described, comprising a substantially rectangular frame having a plurality of prongs formed upon the inner edge of one of the end bars thereof; a pin having one of its ends formed upon one of the side bars of the frame and disposed transversely of said frame; and a clasp pivoted to the frame above the pin and having a plurality of teeth formed upon one edge thereof adapted to engage the opposed surface of the pin.
2. A buckle of the character described, comprising a frame having two side bars and two end bars, one of said end bars be ing curved; a plurality of prongs provided upon the inner edge of the curved end bar; a cross-bar provided adjacent to the prongs of the curved end bar and having a tooth formed upon one edge thereof; a pin having one of its ends formed upon one of the side bars of the frame; a clasp having a bent bar pivoted to the side bars of the frame above the transverse pin and adapted to cooperate with said pin; and a lug formed upon one edge of the bent bar and adapted to engage the tooth of the cross-bar when the clasp is closed upon said frame.
3. A buckle of the character described, comprising a frame having two side bars and two end bars, one of said end bars having a plurality of prongs: a pronged crossbar provided adjacent to the prongs of said end bar and having its ends formed upon the side bars of the frame; a pin having one of its ends formed upon one of the side-bars of the frame and disposed transversely of said frame; a clasp having a bent bar pivoted to the side bars of the frame above the transverse pin and adapted to cooperate with said pin; said bent bar having a plu rality of teeth formed upon one edge thereof; and a lug formed upon one edge of the bent bar and having an opening therein for reception of the tooth of the cross-bar when the clasp is closed upon the frame.
This specification signed and witnessed this twenty-third day of January A. D. 1911.
