Be it known that I, VVASHINGTON I. TUT- rLn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in- Boxes, of which the following 1s a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in boxes, and has for its object to provide a box of simple construct-ion and economical manufacture having an auxiliary mouth in dependent of that which is opened and closed by the usual hinged cover, and an easily and accurately manipulable closure for said auxiliary mouth.

The box is designed primarily, although not exclusively, as a contain-er for granulated smoking tobacco, and the auxiliary mouth is utilizable when it is desired to controllably pour a limited amount of tobacco from the box upon a cigarette paper for the making of a cigarette, or into the bowl of a pipe, with little liability of pouring a greater quantity than intended, thus avoiding waste of tobacco.

With these objects in view, the invention resides in a box embodying the features hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and specified in the claims.

In the drawing, the reference numeral 1 designates the box body having the usual filling and discharge mouth 2 with which is associated the usual or other suitable hinged cover 3. The invention is not c0ncerned with the details of these parts which may be of any known, usual, or desired construction.

In one end or edge wall of the box body is formed, near the top thereof, an auxiliary discharge mouth 4, sufficient of the material of the body, above the mouth 4:, being left to constitute a brace 5 for the upper edges of the side walls to maintain the form of the upper edge of the box body for cooperation with the hinged cover 3. That wall of the box through which the mouth 4 is formed is depressed to provide a guide race 6 in which the slide closure for the auxiliary mouth is received. Below the auxiliary mouth 4: the wall of the box has a slot 7 of a length substantially equal to the length of the mouth 4 and adapted to receive lips 8 provided on the closure 9, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and which serves to hold the closure to and in slidable contact with the box. The closure 9, which may be struck up or fashioned from a blank 10, shown in Fig. 3, comprises a part to fit the guide race 6, its edges sliding along and guided by the walls of the race when moved to open or close the auxiliary mouth 4. The closure also is provided with a lateral guide flange 11 conforming to the shape and dimensions of and fitted over a guide rib 12 parallel with the auxiliary mouth, and which as shown consists of a corner of the box body in Fig. 1. This guide rib and guide flange serve to maintain accurately the position of the closure 9, assisting in guiding the same so that it will be moved freely and not be liable to bind against the walls of the guide race 6 and slot 7. This guide flange 11 may be corrugated or milled to provide increased frictional surface, whereby the closure 9 may be easily manipulated to open or close the mouth 4 to any extent desired, and also serve as a match striking surface.

To avoid any tendency of the slide closure 9 to buckle when the box is constructed of light, thin material, the upper edge thereof is coiled upon itself, as shown at 13, whereby it is stiffened, and distortion thereof or buckling thereof under normal conditions of use avoided.

In the modified construction, Fig. 4, the closure 9 is provided with guide flanges 11 at each edge thereof, fitting about and cooperating with the adjacent corners of the box which serve as guide ribs, and the blank shown in Fig. 5 accordingly has appropriate wings 11 to be fashioned into the pair of guide flanges 11 In use the box may be filled or discharged in whole or part through the mouth 2, but where it is desired to discharge with nicety a sufiicient quantity of tobacco for a cigarette, or to fill the bowl of a tobacco pipe, the auxiliary discharge mouth 4 may be utilized and opened to any extent required Within its maximum capacity for the purposes stated, much Waste of tobacco is thus avoided.

The slide closure may be manipulated by placing a thumb upon the milled guide flange, or if desired upon the curled edge 13 of the slide, and the construction and inter-relation of parts set forth guides the closure accurately and enables it to be moved freely Without danger of binding and Without interfering in any way With the manipulation of the hinged cover 3.

Vhile the invention has been set forth With particular reference to its utility as a container for granulated tobacco, it is to be understood that the invention is not restricted to this particular use.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim is 1. A box comprising a body, one Wall of which is provided With a pouring opening near its top, a depressed closure slide race, and an outstanding guide rib parallel to said race, and a closure fitted and movable in said race to open and close said opening and provided With a guide flange to engage the guide rib.

2. A box comprising a body, one Wall of Which is depressed and provided with a pouring opening near its top, a closure housed in the depressed portion and slida'bly connected to such Wall of the box to open and close such opening and provided with guide flanges to slidably engage corners 0f the box body.
