WASHINGTON I. TUTTLE, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
BOX.
Specification-of Letters Patent.
Patented. June 6, 1911.
Application filed August 27, 1910. Serial No. 579,194.
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, WASHINGTON I. TUTTLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in boxes designed chiefly, though not exclusively, as containers for granular smoking tobacco, and has for its object the provision of a box provided with a novel, simple, and
, conveniently arranged pouring-spout.
The box when used as a container for granular smoking tobacco, has its chief utility in enabling the user, without waste of tobacco, to conveniently pour sufficient tobacco onto a cigarette paper for the making of a cigarette, or to charge the bowl .of a pipe.
The invention consists in a box embodying the features hereinafter set forth and shown in the accompanying drawing, and then specified in the claims.
In the said drawingsFigure 1 is a perspective view of a box embodying the invention, with the hinged-cover. thereof open, and the pouring-spout projected into position for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view showing the interior arrangement. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail. Fig. 4 is a plan of a suitable blank from which the spout may be fashioned.
In the drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates a box-body, 2 the filling and discharge-mouth thereof and 3 a cover for the latter, all of which may be of usual, known or desired construction. Within the body along a wall thereof is slidably mounted, so that it may be housed within the box when not in use, as in Fig. 2, or projected therefrom for use, as in Fig. 1, is a pouring spout 4 having angularly disposed edgewings 5, that work against opposite walls of the box to guide the sliding movement of the spout, and to guide the tobacco, in pouring, along the spout to the discharge end thereof, preventing the same from pass ing ofi at the sides of the spout.
The spout is provided with a slot 6 with which attaching means, shown as lips 7, carried by the wall of the box, engage, to hold the spout to and in sliding engagement therewith. The ends of the slot serve as stops to determine the amount of projection of the spout for use and its normal position Within the box. The discharge edge of the spout has a finger-hold 8, which nests in a recess 9 at the edge of the box wall and stands out beyond the face of said wall, exposed to be operated by the user to project the spout for use. At its inner end the spout has a laterally projecting lip 10 which rides in contact with the box-wall, and causes the walls of the slot 6 to diverge from the plane of the box-wall, as shown in Fig. 3, to provide a cam-face 11 which passes behind the lips 7 when the spout is more or less proj ected for use, whereby the spout is held in adjusted pouring position against accidental or incidental displacement during the pouring operation, which is frequently accompanied by a shaking of the box to induce the tobacco to discharge along the spout.
While I have described the box in connection with its utility as a tobacco box, I do not of course confine my invention to such use.
The blank shown in Fig. 4L is a suitable one for fashioning the spout, having lateral extensions 12 to be bent to form the guide wings, and tongues 13 and l t to form-the finger-hold and projecting lip hereinbefore described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A box comprising a body having a discharge-mouth, a pouring chute slidably mounted along a wall of the box within the body and provided with a slot, attaching means carried by the box wall and engaging the wall of the slot, said spout provided with a cam surface cooperating with the attaching means when the spout is projected to maintain the same in position for use.
2. A box comprising a body having a discharge-mouth, a slotted pouring spout slidably mounted along a wall of the box within the body and provided with a lateral lip at its inner end to engage the wall of the box, and attaching means carried by the my hand in presence of two subscribing Witbox-wall and engaging the Wall of the slot, nesses. whereby a cam surface is provided to cooperate With the attaching means When the spout is projected to maintain the same in position for use.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set WVASHINGTON I. TUTTLE.
