Be it known that I, FRED HULL ABBOTT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Crystal Falls, in the county of Iron and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Receptacle for Powder and the Like, of which the *following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to receptacles or boxes for containing and measuring out powder or analogous material and is especially useful in connection with cans 'for tooth powder.

The object of this invention is to provide an efiicient and inexpensive device which will securely retain the powder or like substance When not in use, and at the same time permit the contents to be rcadily dispensed therefrom in small quantities.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, which will be set fort-h hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings which illustrate as an example the preferred embodiment of my invention, in which drawings similar characters of rel'- erence indicate like parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention with the receptacle par tially broken away to show the construction more clearly, and illustrating the device in a normal position; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a part of the apparatus in a di derent position; and Fig. 3 is a partial vertical cross section.

Referring more particularly to the parts, the receptacle or box 1 maybe of the usual or any desired type for containing tooth powder 'or analogous material. On the inner side oi" a wall of this receptacle I provide a sleeve 2 in which a rod or plunger 3 is m ovabl y mount ed, the upper portion of this plunger passing through and fitting closely in an opening in the top 4 of the receptacle. The plunger is provided with a shoulder 5 to prevent its passing more than a certain distance through the opening in the top of the receptacle and to completely close the opening, thereby preventing the escape of the powder when the receptacle is not in use. The upper part of the plunger is provided with a depression or a perforation 6 to contain a certain quantity of the powder. The plunger is normally held in position with the shoulder or stop 5 against the receptacle top 4, by means of a coiled or helical spring 7, one end of which is looped through an opening 8 in the sleeve 2, while the other extremity is suitably fastened to a pin 9 in the lower end of the plunger 3. This pin 9 may also serve as a stop, against the edge of the sleeve, to limit the motion of the plunger.

This device may be conveniently operated with one hand. The receptacle is held in the hand and the plunger pressed down with the foreiinger. A portion of the contents is allowed to enter the opening in the plunger, ii" necessary by inverting the receptacle. hen the plunger is released through the removal of the finger, it is returned to its normal position by the spring, and carries with it in the opening at its upper extremity the powder which may then be dropped, for eX- ample, upon a tooth brush.

Having thus described the preferred form of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A receptacle having an opening, a bar constituting a plunger, within sai d receptacle, and having` a eonstricted. end forming a shoulder adapted to limit the projection of said plunger through said opening, means within said receptacle for guiding said plunger, and a spring adapted normally to project said plunger through said opening, said plunger having a recess at said eonstricted end for carrying a quantity of powder or the like.

2. A receptacle having a sleeve on an inner wall thereof, a bar constituting a plunger slidably mounted in said sleeve and having a eonstricted end forming a shoulder adapted to limit the projection of said plunger 'from the receptacle, said end having a recess 'for carrying a quantity of powder or the like, and a spring secured to said plunger and to said sleeve whereby said plunger is projceted from said receptacle.

3.
