THE Nouns PETERS C0,. WASHINGTON, n-c.

HARRY S. ERD, OF SAGINAW, MICHIGAN.
DEVICE FOR FILLING GREASE-CUPS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 25, 1907.
Application filed January 2, 1907. Serial No- 350,391.
T 0'. whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY S. ERD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Filling Grease-Cups, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvementsinfilling cans and it is intended more especially to be employed with plastic lubricants.
It is an object of this invention to provide a novel device of this character whereby the lubricant is discharged through the medium of the plunger.
It is also an object of this invention to provide in a device of this character, means acting in conjunction with the plunger for controlling the movement of the lubricant to be discharged.
It is furthermore, an object of the invention to provide in combination with a device of the character described novel means for excluding dust therefrom, when the same is not in use.
Finally an object of this invention is to produce a device of the character noted, which is simple in construction, efiicient in practice and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In'describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts, in which figure given is a central vertical section.
In the drawing, 2 denotes the body of the can which may be in the form of a cylinder having its upper end closed by the top 3, while the bottom 4, thereof is inclined or funnel like in construction and provided with a central aperture 5.
Diametrically opposed and secured to the upper portion of the body 2, are the standards 6, which are engaged by the cross strip 7, said engagement being afforded byperforations 8, in the cross strip through which the standards pass. The ends of the cross strip are provided with the threaded recesses 9, which communicate with the perforations 8.
Engaging the threaded recesses 9, are the screws 10, which are intended to contact with the standards and hold the cross strip 7, in various adjustments on said standards.
Within the can is a piston or plunger 11, corresponding in contour to the interior shape of the can. This plunger is provided with a rod 12, extending upwardly and passing through an aperture 13, in the top 3, of the can and through an opening 14, in the cross strip 7. To the upper or free end of the rod is threaded or otherwise attached a hand grasp 15. In practice the plastic lubricant is placed within the can and the plunger 11, positioned thereabove. The cross strip 7, is positioned at a predetermined point upon the standards 6. iVhen desired to force the lubricant within the cup, the rod 12, is pressed until the hand grasp 15, comes in contact with the cross strip 7. By having the cross strip obstructing the movement of the rod prevents the cup from being filled to overflowing. This has been found a great advantage as ordinarily the applying of plastic lubricants to the cups is a difficult operation and the disadvantages of having the cup overfilled are manifold. It is to be stated that as the can 2, is being emptied the cross strip is adjusted downwardly on the standards. In order that dust or other foreign substances may not enter the body 2, through the opening 5, in the bottom 4, thereof when the can is not in use, a receptacle 16, is employed into which the filling can snugly fits.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,-
In combination, a body having an opening in one of its ends, standards projecting from the opposite end of the body, a cross strip having perforations through which the standards extend and having a central opening,
said cross strip also having threaded recesses in its ends communicating with the perforations, screws engaging the threaded recesses to bind against the standards, a plunger within the body and a rod for the plunger passing through the opening of the cross strip.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HARRY S. ERD.
