Be it known that I, JOHN M. WVILsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Healdton, in the county of Carter and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Containers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to containers for articles or material adapted to be removed in small quantities, for instance crackers, small cakes and the like, and has for one of its objects to provide a simply constructed device of this character wherein the crackers or other articles may be stored, and having means whereby the articles may be dispensed one at a time as required without disturbing the mass or bulk of the material in the container.

Another object of the inventionis to provide a device of this character including a follower member having a lifting rod and means for holding the lifting rod from displacement when not in use.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention.

The improved device is designed for storing and dispensing articles or commodities of various forms and sizes, and it is not clesired to limit the application of the invention to any specific article. The invention is more particularly adapted to storing and dispensing crackers, cakes and the like, and for the purpose of illustration is shown thus applied. The body of the container represented as a whole at 10, is shown oblong in outline with one end 11 closed and the other end open and with a recess or notch 12 in one edge at the open end.

A follower member 13 is slidably disposed within the body 10, and rising from the follower, preferably at one side, is a lifting rod 14, the latter having a lateral offset 15 at the upper end extending normally through the recess 12 and terminating in a knob or enlargement 16 externally of the body.

The open upper end of the body is provlded with a detachable closure including a downturned rim 17.and sunken intermediate portion or panel 18. The rim '17 bears over the upper edge of the body 10 while the panel portion 18 extends for a short distance into the interior of the body,-as illustrated in Flg. 3.

The rim 17 is provided with a recess or notch 19' registering with the recess or notch 12 of the body 10 and thus bears over the offset 15 of the lifting rod. The recesses 12-19 thus coact to retain the lifting rod 14 1n position and prevent its vertical displacement, and likewise coact with the knob 16 to prevent lateral or inward displacement of the rod, as will be obvious.

When the improved device is to be used the closure 1718 is detached and the follower 13 and the rod 14: disposed within the body 10 with the ofiset portion 15 within the recess 12.

The crackers or other articles are then placed within the body and upon the follower and the closure placed in position. The contents of the container are thus supported and protected until required to be dispensed. When one or more of the crackers or other articles are required, the closure 1718 is removed and lifting force applied to the rod 14 to elevate the mass of crackers until the required number are disposed above the upper edge of the body, from whence they can be removed. When the rod is released the remaining mass of crackers together with the follower and rod return to the bottom of the body with the ofiset 15 again within the notch 12, and the closure 17-18 replaced.

The body 10 may be provided with supporting legs 20, and the closure 17-18 provided with a lifting knob 21.

The improved device is simple in construction, can be manufactured of any required size and of any suitable material, and adapted without material structural change to storing and dispensing articles or commodities of various kinds.

The contents of the container are effectually protected until required, and only the particular article or articles required is exposed, or handled.

What I claim is:

1. A container having a closed bottom and follower and having a lateral ofi'set extending through the recess, and having a terminal knob, and a detachable closure for the v container including a downturned rim engageable over the open end thereof and having a recess registering with the recess of the container and bearing over the offset portion of the lifting rod and holding the same from vertical displacement and coacting with the knob to prevent lateral displacement of the same. 7

A container having a closed bottom and a recess in its upper edge, a follower Within the container, a lifting rod attached to the follower and having a lateral offset extending through the recess, and a detachable closure for the container including a downturned rim 'engageable over the open end thereof and with the intermediate por- I, vtion depressed to form a sunken panel to extend into the body of the container, said downturned rim having a recess registering with the recess of the container and bearing over the offset portion of the lifting rod and holding the same from vertical displacement.
